George Allen Digs Himself in Deeper

Was catching up on my blog reading this evening, and noticed that Josh Marshall had linked to a story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch with the following passage:

Speaking with The Times-Dispatch, Allen said the disclosure is "just an interesting nuance to my background." He added, "I still had a ham sandwich for lunch. And my mother made great pork chops."

A bit adament about this subject, eh?

Frankly, I thought Pamela Fox's question was a bit non-germane to the sorts of public policy issues she should have been asking about in yesterday's debate, but there was a very simple answer -- something to the effect of "I'm proud of my Jewish heritage on my mom's side of the family. As y'all know, in terms of my religious beliefs, I'm a practicing Christian." Enough said.

What creeps people out is how this clearly hit a raw nerve with George Allen... and why would he consider someone asking about his Jewish ancestors to be "making aspersions"? Non-germane? Probably. A bit inappropriate for a political debate? Maybe. Aspersions? Why would saying someone might have Jewish ancestry be an "aspersion?"

Allen had to admit it..... (bladerunner - 9/20/2006 7:51:17 PM)
sooner or later. It's obvious this was a long and deeply regarded secret...that doesn't fit the image he wants--otherwise he wouldn't have been so guarded and freaked out with the question. For him to say he found out just last month is really reaching pretty far. The whole gets deeper.

It is quite obvious that old habits die hard with Sen Allen (Jeff B - 9/20/2006 9:21:08 PM)
But this is a new day and the Senator has a new found Heritage to celebrate. I suggest several prominent Jewish leaders arrange a public meeting with Senator Allen in Richmond in order to welcome him into the Jewish family he is just now finding out about. How fun would it be to to create a commerative Yamika for this glorious occasion.
