The Hate Amendment

As I travelled along 460 in Southside today, I saw a sign that caught my attention. It was a 'Yes to Marriage" sign. As you can see, they are worried for the children.
Why, you may ask? Is it that they don't want their children to grow up gay? Is it because as some conservatives have opined, homosexuals are all predators? (RTD for instance.)
Or is it more irrational fear-mongering by the right wing extremists?
Vote No!
Who is this appealing to? The proposed amendment takes a right away from the people of the Commonwealth by way of the Constitution, for the first time I believe. Besides all this, GLBT citizens are deserving of the right to have a legal relationship that guarantees their rights to make civil contracts with each other. They are just as deserving as the population that has marriages where one out of two of them fail. There should be no two-tier citizenship.
Besides, the second paragraph of the amendment is a sure deal killer if enough people find out about it.
I saw this sign, and I just had to comment. By the way, check out the kids in the picture on the poster; they all have sunglasses on. Huh?

I don't claim to know (Mark - 9/19/2006 6:23:17 PM)
all there is to know about glbt issues, or even this amendments negative possibilities. All that matters to me is that when we settle for giving up rights or not fighting for them, then we risk losing all rights.
Strange... (Kathy Gerber - 9/19/2006 7:07:01 PM)
I've heard some right wing radio programs pretty much saying that good Christians home school period. That public schools
teach homosexuality. So no matter how poor you are, no matter your own education level, home school.
So maybe now they are now telling everyone that their kids will go blind if the amendment passes; it makes just as much sense.
It was good seeing you today, Mark.
NO against Marraige Amendment (Gordie - 9/19/2006 10:58:00 PM)
P. T. Barnum once said “you can fool some of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time”
When a constitutional amendment such as the one on gay marriages is introduced one needs to read past the words “Marriage Amendment” and get to the true meaning of this amendment. This amendment outlaws any type of union in the State of Virginia except marriage between a man and a woman who were married in a Religious ceremony or civil court marriage. Because of this fact I am under the opinion that should this amendment pass it will be challenged on the grounds it infringes on other legal documents and agreements that are now settled law in the State of Virginia. It will certainly step on the toes of some influential people in this State.
When laws such as this one are written, we the people have to be very careful of what we are allowing to be passed. For as we allow our legislatures to hide issues under the pretence of highly social issues we allow our selves to become one more step closer to Fascism. Any one old enough to remember World War II will understand Fascism and the ruin it can cause.
This amendment is on the November ballot. The “of the people, by the people and for the people” will speak, but in the mean time I will speak out now against such an amendment. My America does not discriminate or use the hidden racist class issues against any one for any reason or under the pretense of a social issue.
ummm would you believe Lincoln and not Barnum? (teacherken - 9/19/2006 11:57:20 PM)
Barnum's line was that there was a sucker born every minute.
Lincoln's expression was
You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
What If Jesus Was Gay? This Is A Real Debate Among SomeTheologians (PM - 9/20/2006 12:22:39 AM)
http://www.gnosis.or... is one recounting of the debate about whether Jesus may have been gay. I may write an extended post on this some time. It's a great Biblical/theological detective story that has taken many twists and turns.
LOL if it turns out to be true. Bob Marshall will have to do some real explainin' at the Pearly Gates.
Thank you, Daily Press! (LoudounLad - 9/26/2006 11:08:36 AM)
At the end of today's Daily Press story about George Allen "discovering" his ancestry :
"It also gave me a greater understanding of ... what my purpose in life might be, and that is to fight for principles and virtues and values that are right"- values like freedom, opportunity, justice and tolerance, he said.
Regarding whether the anti-gay-marriage amendment contradicted his desire for tolerance for all people, Allen said, "There is no diminishment of any person's rights on account of their sexual orientation. This is an affirmation of the importance of marriage between one man and one woman. It's a valued and time-honored tradition in Virginia, and we want to make sure it stays that way, because there are judges around the country that will ignore the will of the people."
In other words, Allen's now a crusader for tolerance, but when it comes to gay Virginians, "ehh .. not so much."
