Senator Allen Changes His Positions on Iran, Permanent Bases, Stem Cells(Tysons Corner, Virginia) +óGé¼GÇ£ In their second televised debate in two days, Jim Webb outmatched and outclassed Senator George Allen, who continued to change his position on the most important issues. A day after what even conservative pundits admitted was a decisive debate victory for Jim Webb on Meet the Press, Webb once again showed that he is a leader. Webb made a strong case for change, keeping Allen on the ropes the whole time by pointing out his shifting positions on Iraq, stem cell research, dialogue with Iran and virtually every other issue.
+óGé¼+ôAllen seemed completely unprepared for this debate. He struggled throughout the debate to clarify his positions and was forced to resort to bullying tactics. At times, he just recited White House talking points, and at other times +óGé¼GÇ£ Iran, permanent bases in Iraq, stem cells +óGé¼GÇ£ he simply changed his position hoping no one would notice,+óGé¼-¥ said Webb spokesperson Kristian Denny Todd.
Throughout the debate, Webb contrasted Allen with a clear vision on issues ranging from the war in Iraq to economic fairness to stem cells.+óGé¼+ôToday, we saw how different these candidates are both in their personalities and their positions. On one hand, Jim Webb showed he will bring a new set of eyes to the Senate full of intellect, passion and honesty. On the other, George Allen came across as a typical, smug politician who obviously feels entitled to his Senate seat and who never deviates from what the President tells him to say. In desperation, Allen even claimed that he has the same position as Jim Webb on the war in Iraq, which we all know couldn+óGé¼Gäót be further from the truth,+óGé¼-¥ said Kristian Denny Todd.
Allen also changed his positions on Iran, permanent bases in Iraq, and stem cells.
While discussing the involvement of Iran in stabilizing the situation in Iraq, Senator Allen indicated that he would not want to get the nations surrounding Iraq involved in the diplomatic process. But, as recently as last year, he was saying the opposite. In response to questions on how to deal with Iran's nuclear ambitions, Allen claimed that "You'd like to have some dialogue, even with your enemies." [The Toronto Star, 7/1/05]
On permanent bases in Iraq, Allen said today that he opposed the construction of permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq when he actually made public statements in support of funding to build the four bases. Previously, Allen has said, +óGé¼+ôInstead of having our troops all over 100 different places all over Iraq+óGé¼-ª they ought to be on four bases.+óGé¼-¥ And only two months ago on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Allen said, +óGé¼+ôIf the Iraqis ultimately are taking control of their own country+óGé¼-ª and they say, `Gosh, we still need the U.S. there in some presence,' then we should consider accommodating them.+óGé¼-¥ [AP, 7/22/06; This Week, 7/9/06]
+óGé¼+ôThe people of Virginia deserve to have a Senator who will act on principle, not on political expediency. Jim Webb has shown throughout the course of this campaign, and especially in these debates, that he+óGé¼Gäós exactly what Virginians are looking for,+óGé¼-¥ said Denny Todd.

See, Allen thinks that people will not look into history and the facts. Unfortunately for him, he is very wrong.
If I were Peggy Fox and her family I would demand an apology from Allen for his public bulling and for inciting the crowd to lash out at her.
I hope she gathers herself tommorrow and demands an apology. There is no excuse for abusing her or anyone else at any time.
The Jewish queston outrage was a red herring, Allen was looking for a out on "Macaca" and poor Mrs Fox paided the price.
Then I watched it again.
There was no venom in her voice, and considering the topic had been brought up by Jews FIRST and not the blogs, it is a question that deserves an answer.
I think it is borderline anti-semitic to dismiss the question when it is a legitimate concern for Jewish voters in Virginia and around the country.

Public opinion about which political party can better handle the top problem facing the United States is now more favorable to the Democrats than at any time in Gallup's 50 year trend on this indicator of party strength. Last year at this time the two parties were about even.
The military has to take the long view because it knows that if the United States strays from the Geneva Conventions, other countries will, too. As McCain said yesterday on ABC-TV, ``We are more exposed than any other nationality because we have more people all over the world." The military also knows that harsh interrogations often yield false information from prisoners eager to say anything to win better treatment. One terrorism suspect, Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, ``confessed" knowledge of links between Al Qaeda and Iraq after the Central Intelligence Agency handed him over to Egyptian authorities. According to the recently released Senate report on prewar intelligence, Libi had made up the information to avoid cruel treatment by the Egyptians.
The good ole boy chronic Bush-like smirk is supposed to substitute for real understanding.

Suicide Bombs Kill 18 in Afghanistan
By CARLOTTA GALL and ABDUL WAHEED WAFA
KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 18  Afghanistan was hit by three devastating suicide bomb attacks today, killing 18 people and wounding more than 60, many of them children, in one of the country’s worst days of violence against civilians.Four Canadian soldiers were killed in one explosion when a suicide bomber on a bicycle set off a bomb as the soldiers were handing out gifts to children in a village in southern Afghanistan. Eleven other soldiers were wounded as well as 27 villagers, many of them children, local government officials said.
The bombing was the southern village of Char Kota, in Pashmul, one of the areas that NATO troops had only just wrested from the control of Taliban fighters after two weeks of heavy fighting. The NATO commander in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. David Richards, declared victory in the area Sunday, saying that NATO had taken control of the area and forced out the remaining Taliban fighters.
NATO confirmed that four soldiers from its International Security Assistance Force were killed and several injured but did not confirm their nationality. NATO said they were on patrol in a village and talking to children when the bomber approached on his bicycle.
“This action was as much an attack on the Afghan people as an attack on’’ the military force, General Richards said in a statement issued in Kabul. “This patrol was arranging the requirement for aid, reconstruction and development in the Zhare and Panjwai area. It is beyond comprehension that a suicide bomber should choose this time to attack, knowing that he could kill innocent children,†his statement said.
Another suicide bomber struck in the western town of Herat, killing 11 people and wounding 18, and a third blew up his car in Kabul, killing 3 policemen and wounding 9 other people.
A Taliban spokesman, reached by telephone, claimed responsibility for the attack in southern Afghanistan, naming the bomber as a man from the southern city of Kandahar.
The attacks came a day after President Hamid Karzai left to attend the United Nations General Assembly and then to make state visits to Canada and Washington. Mr. Karzai is hoping to win more support for his beleaguered country as violence escalates, and in particular to ask President Bush to bring more pressure on neighboring Pakistan to help prevent the violence. The Afghan government says that Pakistan provides refuge to the Taliban insurgents across the border.
And where are we going to get more troops? The U.K.? http://observer.guar...
Defence Secretary to call for reinforcements from Nato amid claims that British soldiers are just too tired to fightMark Townsend, defence correspondent
Sunday September 17, 2006
The ObserverRelatives of British troops serving in Afghanistan's Helmand province have raised serious concerns over the safety of soldiers, claiming many are so exhausted they are finding it difficult to operate properly.
A growing number of wives, mothers, girlfriends and sisters have decided to speak out over the 'intolerable' pressures on loved ones amid fears that, unless more Nato countries agree to send extra troops, the situation will deteriorate further. The women describe how soldiers they have spoken to have had one day off in eight weeks because of relentless fighting with Taliban forces and are surviving on just three hours sleep.
'They are absolutely shattered; after a 10-hour gun battle my son is so exhausted he can barely speak,' said one mother whose son has been stationed in the volatile Sangin region of Helmand for two months.***
The concerns come as Ministry of Defence officials remain 'hopeful' that more nations in the Nato alliance will agree to send extra troops to Helmand when urgent talks are held this Thursday. Nato generals want an extra 2,500 troops for the operation in southern Afghanistan. Poland has promised to send 1,000 troops, but they will not arrive until February.
Hey, Mr. Allen, where is your president's world leadership on this issue? How come he can't get international support for his "war against terror?"
Maybe some of the VMI graduates that visit the blog will volunteer.
The pro life crowd was agaist invetro 20 years ago because it killed embryos. However, it proved to be in their self intrest to ignore that little detail when it came to impregnating uptight religious women. With invetro does the end justify the means vs stem cell research?
Alle seemed to bristle and claimed he didn't need to answer that question because of religious freedoms. But he seemed was hot under the collar. Said as far as he knew, he was raised by Christians.

How so? Is being half or quarter Jewish (by blood) such an abomination? We're not in Hitler's Germany, when being even 1/5th Jewish carried a death sentence with it, so what's his objection? Losing his CCC credentials might be one answer (thanks, Arturo).
I'm half-Jewish myself; like Allen, also "on the wrong side" (maternal, and the reason I never had any family on that side). But I never thought it was something I should be hiding; it would be like kicking my Mother in the face.
I didn't grow up in the US, so am unfamiliar with many things that the rest of you take for granted. But I did read a lot of American lit, both while at the U and after I came here. And I think that what Allen is doing is a version of "passing"...
Screw you, Mr Allen, though I'll excuse the horse you rode in on; I like horses, but I hate phonies.
