NBC Heaquarters: Greeting Webb as He Arrives for Debate

Around 100 supporters of Jim Webb and George Allen (evenly divided?) werea up bright and early this morning at NBC Headquarters in Washington, DC to greet their respective candidates as they arrived for the Webb-Allen Meet the Press debate today. Interestingly, the Allen supporters were all from one group of American University College Republicans (I asked them). Last time I checked, American University was not located in our fair Commonwealth. The Webb supporters were almost all from Virginia. Interesting...

Looks like a great start (Eric - 9/17/2006 9:53:20 AM)
to the day. Interesting how this is the second time in two weeks that College Republicans from a DC university have come out as a group to support Allen.
Two questions immediately pop into mind:
1. Is this going to be a theme? Everytime Allen comes to the un-real part of Virginia (or nearby DC), will it be CR's who provide his base of support?
2. Where are the College Democrats?
Anyway, looking forward to the start of the debate in 20 minutes.
Reports already coming in... (Lowell - 9/17/2006 9:57:48 AM)
...over at
Daily Kos that Webb kicked butt in the debate. Here's one comment:
Just watched the MTP Webb/Allen debate...
It was great! Webb will get some good numbers boosts from it. He came across as honest, prepared, with fresh definitive ideas. Tim did a good job of challenging them both on important issues. Allen sputtered and regurgitated many Repug talking points and rhetoric. He still insists that he doesn't and hasn't ever known why he sputtered 'macaca', that it isn't a word he'd ever known. I don't know about you, but I can't grock my mind around spewing a word that I've never known or heard. As always, he's lying. Webb wiped Allen up with truth to power, honesty, conviction, fresh and tangible ideas, and he was obviously comfortable and prepared. He called Allen on all his misstatements and untruths and attempts at character assassination. I enjoyed the debate! Go Webb!!
Webb was impressive. (Kathy Gerber - 9/17/2006 10:03:05 AM)
And you're right, Webb called him on it every time he started down that path.
That's right! (phriendlyjaime - 9/17/2006 10:28:32 AM)
We get to watch at 9, I was wondering why y'all were so quiet!
Webb won, hands down, no questions. Russert would not take any of Allen's wishy washy bull, either.
More later, Thadd and I are celebrating with brunch. :)
Interesting what Webb said (Kathy Gerber - 9/17/2006 10:30:44 AM)
about theorists making decisions on the war.
Absolutely (Dan - 9/17/2006 10:44:43 AM)
WEBB IS KICKING GEORGE ALLEN'S ASS!
WOW! He is quite impressive so far. George Allen is shaking.
Webb looks absolutely Senatorial. How can anyone watch this and not at least respect Webb?
Did Allen actually answer any questions? (KCinDC - 9/17/2006 10:44:24 AM)
It seems like every question Russert asks Allen dodges around answering. I realize that's what politicians generally do, but Allen seems to be carrying it to an extreme. I'm pleased (but surprised) that Russert actually came back and pressed him about it a couple of times.
No, he did not. (phriendlyjaime - 9/17/2006 11:49:10 AM)
That was the most striking part of this debate; George Allen has no answers, and people are onto him.
Best line of the debate: "That is an absurd anaolgy, George." Jim Webb
Webb- Allen Debate (Gordie - 9/17/2006 10:55:09 AM)
Sat down at 9am with a DVD in recorder and recorded entire show.
As usual Allen's answer were total spin with no direct and sometimes no answer to the Question. Jim answered every question direct and responsive. Some times his answer were so direct he ended too soon. But then that is a Democrat, direct responsive and no spin.
Got a litte upset that Tim let Allen spin too long, but that just shows Republicans rule, have no real answer and have lengthy speechs with no substance.
During the commercial break I really got upset with NBC, Allowing Allen to run a commercial promoting him during a debate is entirely unethical. Just goes to prove money, money, money. No high standards for any Media outlet when it comes to making money.
Yes I agree, Jim was good and won this debate, although some nervousness did show, I do not feel it hurt him.
Allen was droning.. (Kathy Gerber - 9/17/2006 11:07:49 AM)
Too much.. I did miss the first few minutes but hope to see it again.
Allen is keeping his Presidential aspirations on the table, that's for sure, but good grief, just say so.
I suggested on Kos (Newport News Dem - 9/17/2006 11:16:02 AM)
that Webb ask the question, via the media, of Allen every day.
Senator, you refused twice to answer the question asked on MTP. Did you tell me (Webb) that you voted for the Iraq war out of party loyalty to GWB? The answer is either yes or no and the truth only takes a second to say.
Did Allen just make a bold face lie about Macaca? (Jeff B - 9/17/2006 11:17:49 AM)
"Macaca" is a Tunisian racial slur. His mother is from Tunisia and Allen claims he just made it up, BHWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWA. I can see the TV commercials now.
Yes, he did... n/t (Arturo - 9/17/2006 11:19:34 AM)
Anti-Establishment Allen (Eric - 9/17/2006 11:24:07 AM)
Curious that a person who served as a State Delegate, U.S. Representative, Governor, and U.S. Senator considers himself to be anti-establishment rebel.
If those positions aren't the "establishment", then I don't know what is.
Did he seek those positions so he could fight the establishment? Change the establishment? If he did, he must've forgot why he went, because those changes didn't happen.
So he either fancies himself as something he's not (and doesn't realize he's not), or he's just saying something blatantly false to get votes.
