Bad Spinach Alert: Allen Tries to Weaken Food Safety Laws

With the news that bagged spinach could be contaminated with E. Coli bacteria, the public's focus shifts for the moment to the issue of food safety.  Obviously, we all want the strongest possible legal protections in this area.  Don't we? I mean,  it's just common sense, right?

Well, apparently, it's not "common sense" in the world of one George "Self-Proclaimed Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative" Allen.  Believe it or not, George Jefferson Allen actually is co-sponsoring a bill that the Union of Concerned Scientists says would "eliminate 200 state laws dealing with food safety and labeling" in favor of "the federal government+óGé¼Gäós 'uniform' lowest common denominator."

Interestingly, Allen joins in co-sponsoring this legislation with some of the Senate's most extreme right-wing Republicans, people like James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who is perhaps most (in)famous for arguing that global warming is the "greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."  Allen also joins Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum (R-PA) and Jim DeMint (R-SC), who believes that single mothers who live with their boyfriends should be excluded from teaching in public schools.

Hey, wasn't it George Allen who said, "You can tell a lot about people by the folks they stand with?"  'Nuff said.

Birds of a feather (VA Breeze - 9/15/2006 9:21:30 PM)
Ms. Drake has been active in the House on the same issue - weakening food safety requirements.

Someone had to say this one. (Kenton - 9/15/2006 10:41:56 PM)
George Allen left a sour taste in my mouth.

Good one Kenton...How about... (David M - 9/15/2006 10:54:20 PM)
George Allen has made many sick to their stomachs during his long career.

Hmm. (Kenton - 9/15/2006 10:59:05 PM)
Allen. Tastes worse than Santorum.

Excellent addition (David M - 9/16/2006 12:51:55 AM)
Have to say this one takes the cake.

Witnesses describe this suspect... (Loudoun County Dem - 9/15/2006 11:10:15 PM)

What do George Allen and spinach have in common? (esvb - 9/16/2006 12:12:55 AM)
Both used to symbolize strength, now they just make you sick as c*#p!

Puh-leese, (libra - 9/16/2006 12:24:06 AM)
Give the guy a break... He's simply voting for kids' rights.

Everyone knows kids hate spinach, right? But can they convince their parents to stop cramming it down their reluctant throats? They can't, being powerless. OTOH... If eating spinach (or broccoli, or any other such bleh) is dangerous, the parents will think at least twice before they say "finish your spinach; children in Africa would be only too hapy to *have* it to it"

I think this time you're maligning the poor little monkey

Allen and Drake are Corporate Cronies NOT Conservatives... (mosquitopest - 9/16/2006 4:03:32 AM)
This just goes to show that Allen and Crake are Corporate cronies NOT Conservatives because they are doing away with STATES RIGHTS in order to allow food corporations to make bigger profits at the expense of public health.

They are doing away with the ability of ETHICAL business to be able to label their food with higher standards than the law allows.....Some companies want to supply safe food to the public but it won't work if they can't label and identify what makes their food great.

This is a BIPARTISAN issue folks.  The corporations are buying senators and representatives to change the rules so they can wipe out competition form comapnies wanting to sell us safe, natural, organic products.

DRAKE AND ALLEN REPRESENT CORPORATIONS NOT PEOPLE.

This is the bottom line.

Buzz...Buzz...
