National Review Slams Allen Campaign

The National Review slammed Allen's campaign for stupidity with regards to the dirty move to bring up a 27 year old story.  They argue it was dumb because it isn't an issue AND it will help Webb with would-be Allen supporters....

Allen+óGé¼Gäós +óGé¼+ôMacaca+óGé¼-¥ Hangover

By The Editors

Ah, for the days of the +óGé¼+ômacaca+óGé¼-¥ dispute. Back then, the Virginia Senate race between Republican incumbent George Allen and Democratic challenger James Webb was dominated by a silly attack on Allen for a comment that offended only the perpetually offended. Now Allen has risked alienating conservative voters by launching his own silly attack on Webb.

(CONTINUES)
The Allen camp hit Webb, a former Navy secretary, for an article he wrote when he was an instructor at the Naval Academy in 1979. In the article, entitled +óGé¼+ôWomen Can+óGé¼Gäót Fight,+óGé¼-¥ Webb argued that his alma mater shouldn+óGé¼Gäót admit women because they are unsuited to combat. At a press conference organized this week by the Allen campaign, five woman Naval Academy graduates said that Webb+óGé¼Gäós colorfully argued opinion had been hurtful and harmful to them. Webb wrote in his article that the academy+óGé¼Gäós sole dormitory was +óGé¼+ôa horny woman+óGé¼Gäós dream,+óGé¼-¥ and that he hadn+óGé¼Gäót met a single female midshipman he +óGé¼+ôwould trust to provide those men with combat leadership.+óGé¼-¥ The graduates attributed sexual harassment at the academy to male midshipmen+óGé¼Gäós being emboldened by Webb+óGé¼Gäós views.

What nonsense. In any case, Webb long ago disavowed this position. As his campaign pointed out in response to the Allen press conference, within a few years of writing his controversial article he supported integration of the military academies; and as Navy secretary he cracked down on sexual harassment in the service and significantly expanded the operational assignments available to women. The campaign also pointed out that eleven years ago, as governor of Virginia, George Allen opposed (correctly, in our view) integrating the all-male Virginia Military Institute, saying +óGé¼+ôit wouldn+óGé¼Gäót be the VMI that we+óGé¼Gäóve known for 154 years. You just don+óGé¼Gäót treat women the way you treat fellow cadets.+óGé¼-¥

So what was the point of the Allen campaign+óGé¼Gäós attack on Webb? Does Allen actually think women should be in direct combat? If so, what current combat exemptions does he want lifted?

The move was also politically ill advised. Retired Naval officers who recall their good old days at the academy when they congregate at Virginia Beach and Newport News have only been reminded of what they once liked about Jim Webb, as have some conservative voters who admired his willingness to fight the feminization of the military. All voters have been reminded that Webb is a Vietnam veteran who knows more about the demands of combat than his woman critics or Allen+óGé¼Gäós campaign.

The Allen camp may have hoped that Webb+óGé¼Gäós blunt talk of 27 years ago would offend suburban women+óGé¼Gäós sensibilities. But why drag up Webb+óGé¼Gäós distant past when their own candidate is routinely dogged by the bogus charge that his youthful fondness for Confederate flags reveals something about his current views on race?

It is important that Allen, a talented conservative, be reelected, so we hope that this week+óGé¼Gäós misstep can be attributed to a +óGé¼+ômacaca+óGé¼-¥ hangover that still has his campaign off-balance. Whether women can fight is not the question. The question is: Can the Allen campaign fight a savvy campaign? That would mean avoiding politically correct gotcha politics and making the case that Webb is too liberal +óGé¼GÇ¥ not too insensitive +óGé¼GÇ¥ for Virginia.

The Fix Speaks "Republicans Acknowledge Privately . . ." (PM - 9/15/2006 12:51:19 PM)

Chris Cilizza puts the Virginia race on his hot list:

10. Virginia: The Fix lives in Virginia, but living and working inside the Beltway makes it tough to analyze just how much damage Allen's "macaca" moment did to his chances of winning reelection. According to a new Mason-Dixon poll, the answer is quite a bit. While Allen still holds a lead over Webb, it has narrowed considerably since earlier this summer, and now even Republicans privately acknowledge that the incumbent is in jeopardy. Allen's campaign is taking this race very seriously -- as evidenced by the press conference on Wednesday that drew attention to an article Webb penned in the late 1970s that argued against women serving in the military. We're interested to see how Webb -- not a thick-skinned person by nature -- weathers this body blow from Allen. (Previous ranking: N/A)

It did hurt his chances !! (Texas Aggie - 9/16/2006 6:10:56 PM)
You're right.  Allen's racist comment did hurt his chances to win and reduced his lead but not enough.  Most all politicians do finger-pointing and it's even worse when one is dumb enough to point at a voter and verbally degrade him in front of the world.

Virginia must remove anyone idiotic enough to continue playing a puppet role, kissing up to a regime making horrible decisions, and then continue with lies about his racist actions when there's proof against him.

Take a look at the proof from below.

Thanks for posting this so quickly (Doug Garnett-Deakin - 9/15/2006 1:43:13 PM)
I keep forgetting how much NRO loves Webb. Sorry 4thegipper, roger, blackamerican, Webb is a DARLING of the NRO. I will say now this puts Roger's argument that the hitting back at Webb about Reagan is not going to change the feeling of Reagan Democrats or Reagan Republicans (except for folks like him). As I said before, I come from a very conservative family (though not socially)- I guess Western conservative is the right term, and they, like NRO, just adore Webb. So sorry, its a fact.

All voters have been reminded that Webb is a Vietnam veteran who knows more about the demands of combat than his woman critics or Allen’s campaign.

ouchie

and they difinitively say they want Allen to win. This is the NRO, for God's sake. Then

Whether women can fight is not the question. The question is: Can the Allen campaign fight a savvy campaign?

yeouch. How's it feel to have thrown back on you by your well reasoned bretheren what you have accused the Webbies doing- running a poor campaign?

Interestingly enough... (Ingrid - 9/15/2006 3:45:56 PM)
I was discussing this very issue with my colleague across the hall yesterday.  I said that I believed that some conservative Virginians may actually agree with most of what Jim Webb wrote in that 27 year old article.  My colleague agreed, and stated that he attended West Point in the sixties.  In those days, West Point would not have been an appropriate environment for his daughter, he said.

It remains to be seen how many conservative voters will cast their ballot for Jim Webb as a result, or how many will simply stay home.  Jim, of whom President Reagan spoke so highly, is certainly very thoughtful in the way he has handled the campaign thus far, probably because he is not a career politician.  In the meantime, Jim's opponent, the career politician, has committed blunders too numerous to mention.
