Another Allen scandal spreads: Allen's Lie about Webb's record

Markos:

VA-Sen: A racist and a liar. New Allen commercial claims that Webb only served in the Reagan Administration for 10 months, when he actually did so for four years. Eight months as Secretary of the Navy, the rest of that time as an Assistant Secretary of Defense. Obviously, that ad with the Reagan endorsement has drawn blood and is driving the Allen folks crazy.

This is a bald-faced lie from our Senator.  If he has any morals or values - he'd take down this ad immediately.

Secretary of the Navy (Teddy - 9/15/2006 12:06:09 PM)
Thought that was for 10 months.

Well (Nichole - 9/15/2006 12:08:15 PM)
Overall is was much longer.
Again, intended to mislead the public.

Text vs. Voiceover (Doug in Mount Vernon - 9/15/2006 12:39:14 PM)
The text and voiceover in the ad are different, and I believe it's the announcer's voice that implies James Webb only worked in the administration for 10 months then abruptly quit.  Of course, they don't mention his rise to that position from within, or that he left on highly regarded principles and won respect for that.

Of course, the PATs always dig up the one or two quotes they can find that seem to counteract the truth.

That's OK, people are smart enough to figure that out, and the press is slamming Allen's new Anti-Reagan ad.

COMMENT HIDDEN (Roger A. Jarrell - 9/15/2006 12:46:35 PM)

Please Keep talking about the Reagan Ad (Nick Stump - 9/15/2006 1:12:59 PM)
I just love to see the ad played over and over against on all the cable news shows.  It's such an effective ad, and the extra airplay really helps.  Thanks, Roger.  I always knew you were a good guy.  We appreciate your help.

Nick, good to see you hoss (Roger A. Jarrell - 9/15/2006 1:32:25 PM)
I'll gladly bet a case of Kentucky Bourbon that Webb's negatives increase dramatically.

Will you take that bet?

Well, at least you're betting good whiskey (Nick Stump - 9/18/2006 1:18:42 AM)
But I would never bet on polls.  I'll play poker.  At least I have the illusion of have some control over my future.

I don't think this is an issue that will affect the election.  Voters are smarter than that.  This is nothing but a Swiftboat attempt and this boat won't float.

Gesh, He did! (Newport News Dem - 9/15/2006 1:13:46 PM)
Reagan gave a glowing endorsement of Webb in the footage from Annapolis and in his reply to Webb's resignation.

It is only the hysterical Allen supporters who fast forward Reagan's deep appreciation of Webb, for all to see, and somehow turn this into a political endorsement from the grave on 2006.

Why do you think Virginians are too stupid to understand the obvious while your team uses a slick and contradictory ad to intentionally mislead?

FYI, I am one of those not happy about the use of Reagan to begin with.

Ronald Reagan did support Jim Webb (Fluvanna Democrat - 9/15/2006 6:34:29 PM)
Anyone who watches Jim's spot that isn't over-the-top partisan will see that.  During his administration Ronald Reagan thought highly enough of Jim Webb to have him be a part of his administration.  Jim Webb was the most highly decorated member of his class.  Jim Webb is now running for the VA Senate. Period.

Olbermann's always good for these. (phriendlyjaime - 9/15/2006 12:08:18 PM)
He'd probably run both ads, too.

Until Nov 7th thats what... (bladerunner - 9/15/2006 12:46:15 PM)
You're going to get. He'll sling whatever crap he can, and if it sticks(right or wrong) that's all the matters. Remember folks the only thing that matters to Felix is getting reelected--and as I've said over and over--HE'LL SAY OR DO ANYTHING TO GET REELECTED. Or he'll have his underlings do the dirty work. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE HOW LOW THIS SENATORIAL-TRAILOR-PARK-TRASH WILL GO, NEVER!!!!!

Does George Allen Support the Trench? (PM - 9/15/2006 1:37:31 PM)
I can see it now.  George Allen on TV -- "I voted for funds for the trench around Baghdad!  Yes, our modern military is going back to WWI trench warfare tactics, and I support this 100%."

Oh, another 5 Americans and another 130 Iraqis dead.  (Though the GOP doesn't really care about non-Americans.)

Iraqi security forces will dig trenches around Baghdad and set up checkpoints along all roads leading into the city to try to reduce some of the violence plaguing the capital, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

A U.S. Marine was killed Friday in Anbar province, and an American soldier was killed Thursday evening by a roadside bomb northwest of Baghdad, the military said. Five American soldiers died Thursday, making it an especially bloody day for U.S. forces.***

The plan to dig trenches around Baghdad will be implemented in coming weeks, Interior Ministry spokesman Brig. Abdul-Kareem Khalaf told The Associated Press.

It comes as more than 130 people were slain in two days — either killed in attacks or tortured and dumped in rivers or on the city's streets.

Now there you go again, George (VitalCentrist - 9/15/2006 2:31:51 PM)
Are you going to believe George Allen or your own eyes?

The Reagan ad's speech is from 1985. RONALD REAGAN says that Webb was in his adminstartion as Assistant Secretary of Defense as of 1985. This is before he was Secretary of the Navy. I believe that this is like two years before the Navy post.

How dare George Allen accuse RONALD REAGAN of lying in a TV ad.

Goerge Aleen is no RONALD REAGAN

The Connection Newspapers in No. Va. got it right also (Used2Bneutral - 9/15/2006 3:35:15 PM)

Here is a piece of the article

In the letter from Reagan's Presidential Library, the writer, JoAnn Drake, called the 30-second ad very negative. In fact, it only shows Reagan saying positive things about Webb's military service in Vietnam. The ad can be viewed at www.webbforsenate.com/ads.
"There's not one negative word in that ad," Webb said. "It's a positive ad."
The Allen campaign issued a blistering press release about the flap, accusing Webb of treating Reagan's widow with "unbelievable disrespect" for not pulling the ad.
However, Allen's campaign also used an image of Reagan in a campaign flyer that was sent to homes in Northern Virginia over the weekend. The flyer features a photo of a young Allen standing alongside the former president.
It is not known if Allen had permission to use the image of Reagan, as neither his campaign spokesman or the Reagan Presidential Library returned phone calls Monday.

if nancy reagans staff won't return phone calls... (accidentalwoman - 9/15/2006 4:44:17 PM)
she must not have any thing to say. if she were offended i think she would say so.
