By the way, Trent Lott is up for re-election this year in Mississippi against Democratic candidate Erik Fleming.  Why is Trent Lott being allowed to use images of himself and Ronald Reagan after Mrs. Reagan called for "any candidate" to "please refrain" from using "the president's name, image or likeness?"  Is there a consistent standard here - Republicans say the LOVE consistent standards, after all - or is the use of President Reagan's likeness alright for Republican candidates but not for Democratic candidates?  What's going on here?

It All Depends (Teddy - 9/9/2006 11:00:42 AM)
It all depends on whose ox is gored. One more case of double standards from the Republicans: Do as I say, not as I do.

I hope Webb does run the ad and does not pull it, even though I do not admire Reagan myself (it was during his presidency that I began to leave the Republican Party--- or, rather, the Party left me). While the pro forma objection from dear little Nancy through mouthpiece Meese (who, by the way, has a few skeletons in his closet) is to be expected, there are too many politicians invoking images of Reagan--- and Jefferson and Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and so on and so forth--- for her objection to hold any water.  Sort of pathetic if you think about it.

The controversy will only enhance the ad's message, to Webb's advantage. The ad is not negative. It does not pretend that Reagan is endorsing Webb, and no honest person wuld suppose he is. It is a film clip that has not been photoshopped, it is public knowledge, it is true and factual. I have no qualms whatsoever about using it. Buzz off, critics, and thanks for pumping up interest in Webb (like banning a book in Boston in the old days, the publicity will only increase readership)

If the Webb campaign pulls this ad now... (Loudoun County Dem - 9/9/2006 11:05:54 AM)
...it sets a very bad precident. Webb's campaign would be pressured to pull any ad that the repubs can manufacture a controversy about. We might as well have Dick Wadham run both campaigns.

Put this ad out for voter to see, just like Allen's 'Welcome to America' moment. The voters can differentiate the diamonds from the dung. The more the repubs push this 'controversy' the more pathetic they will look (it will also drive more free exposure of the ad via news).

(sorry for re-posting this but I felt it applied here as well).

Maybe we should go back to calling it National Airport.

Why is Trent Dissing Nancy? (left in a right world - 9/9/2006 1:20:29 PM)
I can understand why Webb and Trent both want to use Ronnie Boy in their ads.  This guy is the Repug God of the last 40 years.  Webb wants to show Ronnie's appreciation of his character and fortitude.  Trent wants to remind his electorate that he knew Ronnie and worked with him.

The real insult here is Trent Lott.  Nancy's opinion on this side of the aisl matters a little more than Hillary's opinion on the other side of the aisle.  It is Trent who is defying the legacy on Ronnie Boy by not acceeding to Nancy's request.  If he is a good Repug, he should listen to the Repug's widow and respect her wishes!!
