Bloggers for Field

Dear Fellow Bloggers,
My name is Bryan Scrafford and I write for Ambivalent Mumblings. As many of you know, I have written several posts in support of Andrew Hurst. Andy is running against Tom Davis, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform. Much to our chagrin, recent media reports have revealed that instead of ensuring that lawmakers are held to the highest of standards, Tom Davis has formed cozy relationships with lobbyists and PACs. That is why it is so important to elect a candidate, such as Andy Hurst, who will honestly strive to advocate reform.

In recent elections, the blogosphere has become a powerful part of the political process. A candidate, however, cannot win an election solely based upon his or her support among net-root activists. It is therefore crucial that a candidate has as many volunteers as possible. Unfortunately, there are many people who do not have the time to personally volunteer for a candidate. There is, after all, only so many hours in a day. As a result, I would like to present a proposal of how you could potentially help the Andy Hurst for Congress campaign.

An Act Blue site, http://www.actblue.com/page/bloggersforfield, has been set up in order to raise money for the Hurst campaign. Through this site, donors would be able to assist Andy+óGé¼Gäós ability to reach out to voters across District 11. The first $4,000 raised will go towards hiring a field organizer, and the rest of it would be used as the campaign sees fit, with the understanding that it must be used for voter contact, or other field activities. The organizers of this site would also like to have the support of a vast number of bloggers, not just one person in particular.
The next step is where your help is requested. In order for the goal of at least $4,000 to be met, the word must be spread about the +óGé¼+ôBloggers for Field+óGé¼-¥ site. Obviously, if a significant number of blogs mention the site, it will be much easier to reach a large number of voters. If you could kindly provide a link to the site, http://www.actblue.com/page/bloggersforfield, on your website, it would be greatly appreciated.

Since the +óGé¼+ôBloggers for Field+óGé¼-¥ site will be launched on September 8 and run through September 31, it would also be wonderful if you could draw attention to the site by mentioning it in a post or another manner that you feel would be helpful. Any help you could provide, of course, would be appreciated.

For those of you who are interested, the following is the text that would appear on the +óGé¼+ôBloggers for Field+óGé¼-¥ site:

The Virginia blogosphere recognizes that +óGé¼+ôclicks don+óGé¼Gäót vote+óGé¼-¥, voters in fact vote. That is why we have created this page, to help harness our on-line energy, and take it off-line. Every dollar donated to this page will be an earmarked donation with 100 Percent going to Field activities. The first $4,000 will go towards hiring a field organizer, and the rest to be used as the campaign sees fit, with the understanding that it must be used for voter contact, or other field activities.

For $4,000 the campaign could send out about 1000 pieces of mail, maybe persuading 30 voters, or the money could be used to hire a field organizer which between October 1st and Nov 8th, can recruit hundreds of volunteers, persuade thousands more and turn them all out to vote for the Democratic slate in 2006.

We have picked Andrew Hurst, because the Hurst campaign is doing almost all of the field work for Webb in the 11th District, and as such, your donation to the Hurst Campaign will benefit both campaigns.

Thank you for your time and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I may be reached via email at bscraffo@gmu.edu. You may also visit Andy+óGé¼Gäós website, http://www.hurstforcongress.com/, in order to find out more about his stance on the issues.

Sincerely,
Bryan J. Scrafford

First donation just came in (pitin - 9/7/2006 2:55:28 PM)
For $11.11, let's keep the ball rolling.  Remember, this is a great opportunity for those of us that can't volunteer, instead you can chip in for an organizer that can find other volunteers in your stead.

Meanwhile, Davis is pimping for developers and contractors (Andrea Chamblee - 9/7/2006 5:10:29 PM)
He interfered this week with plans for a metrorail tunnel to reduce the impact on traffic in the area with the nation's worst traffic. Bechtel paid handsomely for Davis's action. Read a response to the corruption by Andy Hurst!

According to the website www.opensecrets.org, Bechtel has contributed $11,500 to Congressman Davis's campaigns since 1996 and has given $5000, the maximum contribution allowed by law, this year alone.  Additionally, former Bechtel executive William Friend has contributed nearly $20,000 to Davis's various campaign funds.

You can unseat Davis. He is running for reelection against Democrat Andy Hurst. If he wins reelection, Davis has ambitions for the Senate in 2008 and then the White House.

Davis has ties to Abramoff that inspired Andy. There's lots of reasons to vote for committed, hard working man like Andy Hurst over Davis, not just that You've heard me say I count Davis's corruption over races in 40 states and involving 103 Republican candidates. Also it has infected Government Reform Committee that refuses to investigate firms in Iraq - including -- Surprise - Bechtel.

Donate to and volunteer for Andy Hurst.  Hurst is not taking any PAC money. Can you donate href="1 for the 11th District? Or more - the new Campaign HQ address is 11198 - how about $111.98?

Aren't they being matched through Sept 10?

Perfect Candidate to donate to (Ambivalent Mumblings - 9/7/2006 5:34:21 PM)
I think it's worth mentioning that Andy Hurst is a candidate that frequently participates in canvasses and actually takes the time to go out and meet the voters. Since Andy is working hard to ensure he knows what is important to the voters of Virginia's 11th district, we should do what we can to help him get elected. We are now only $3988.88 away from earning the initial $4000. (Hey, every little bit helps).

You should link to your blog (Mookie - 9/7/2006 9:16:34 PM)
Great post there--

Andy has a great Team (NovaDem - 9/7/2006 6:47:03 PM)
but there are so many volunteers on it, we really do need the help maximize their potentially.  Plus who ever gets hired gets to work with the great guys already on staff and interning for Andy and who wouldn't want to help make that persons dreams come true.

P.S. Mike Burns is Field Director for Hurst for Congress

Mike is a great guy (Ambivalent Mumblings - 9/7/2006 9:40:20 PM)
Mike is a great guy, which isn't surprising considering whose campaign he's working for.

Double your donation? (Andrea Chamblee - 9/9/2006 12:46:39 PM)
C'MON, guys!  I added as much as I could to make it $111.11, and I see another joined in.  Skip your Starbucks in Sept and donate $25.
In my Hurst newsletter I read a group called NO MORE TOM-FOOLERY is matching your ActBlue Hurst donations through SUNDAY.  I hope it applies to this site, too.  Get moving!

Thanks for helping (Ambivalent Mumblings - 9/9/2006 1:11:07 PM)
I have also posted an updated diary today. The total is now up to 211.11.

We need to get going in order to meet the goal of $4000.
