JIM WEBB on taxes:

Tax cuts should be fair and should not largely benefit the wealthy while passing the burden on to our children.

This country is splitting into three pieces. People at the top have never had it so good. The middle class is continuing to get squeezed by stagnant wages and the rising cost of living. And we are in danger of creating a permanent underclass.

We must reexamine our tax and trade policies and reinstitute notions of fairness.

Allen on taxes:

Voted to eliminate estate tax on the wealthiest Americans at a potential cost of $ 776 billion

Supported all of Bush+óGé¼Gäós tax cuts that have disproportionately benefited the wealthiest Americans.

Voted to end a tax break for teachers that allowed them to deduct $250 of out-of-pocket expenses they pay for classroom supplies

Voted for $4.4 billion in tax breaks for oil companies

President Bush's tax cuts are not creating our deficits, the so-called "burden on our children."  In fact, the federal government has generated more revenue with these cuts (the same thing happened during Reagan’s tenure when the highest tax bracket went from paying 70% to 30%).  Under these cuts the wealthy actually pay a higher percentage of the personal income tax.  In fact, under Bush the tax burden on the poorest 50 percent of taxpayers has decreased to less than 4%.

Irresponsible spending is the cause of our debt, and here our President and Republican Congress are to blame.
