Please see the three excellent campaign e mails below that went out today from Jim Webb's Senate campaign.
The first e mail below "Jim Webb for US Senate Letters to the Editor Weekly" has a lot of data and sound media advice for the grassroots that should be valuable in all 2006 Democratic campaigns as well as in future campaigns!
The next e mail below "Introduce Your Neighbors to Jim Webb!" has excellent information to help define Jim Webb in a positive way on the issues and shows specifically what he stands for. Webb is running on an excellent message that all Democratic candidates need to be able to connect with the voters (and especially with the many disillusioned Republicans and impressionable center voters who are the key voters needed for Democrats to win back power in at least one branch of Congress in 2006)!
The last e mail below "Jimmy Webb" is very personal where "Jim's son Jimmy, an infantry Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, has been scheduled to be deployed to Iraq for a number of months." It makes this very touching appeal which I fully agree with:
"Regardless of the political aspects of this war and your feelings towards it, it's important we keep our thoughts and prayers with the soldiers we are sending into harm's way."
This is a message that ALL Americans should be united on and is an excellent message for Democrats to be running on to counter Bush, Rumsfeld, Ken Mehlman, Rush Limbaugh, and other top Neocon GOP leaders who are using war and fear for political purposes to try and keep power in Congress this year!
I also cross-posted this on Gen. Wes Clark's blog:
Please forward this on to help Jim Webb end George Allen's 2008 Presidential campaign in 2006 and so that all Democrats can utilize this valuable information!

Dear Webb LTE Volunteers:
The first poll showing Jim Webb ahead in the polls was released Sunday Night. The Zogby Interactive / Wall Street Journal poll puts the race at 47.9% Webb, 46.6% Allen.
How did this happen?
The net effect of the entire M-word scandal is that George Allen has made a career out of making people believe he+óGé¼Gäós a nice guy, but when you really know him, he+óGé¼Gäós not a nice guy. George Allen took weeks to apologize. A Webb volunteer was called and the Allen campaign conducted a poll on whether and how Allen should apologize. When he finally did, his operatives simultaneously blamed the media and denounced his detractors. Later, Allen was quoted on a Virginia Television station as saying +óGé¼+ôapparently you now have to watch your sense of humor+óGé¼-¥. Is it a real apology when you whine about having to make it and poll on whether you should make it at all?
That+óGé¼Gäós why now is such an important time to get your positive Letters published about Jim Webb. Virginians are ready for a change politically and now they+óGé¼Gäóre looking for a new leader in the US Senate. You can introduce your neighbors to Jim Webb: war hero, Navy Secretary, Emmy-award winning journalist, bestselling author, champion of social justice, true Virginia gentleman.
While this one poll puts Jim Webb in the lead, there+óGé¼Gäós only one poll that matters: the one taken by the Secretary of the Commonwealth on November 7. There+óGé¼Gäós no doubt that this is a real race, but in one respect we are clearly behind: name recognition. An early internal poll had George Allen+óGé¼Gäós name recognition at over 90% and Jim Webb+óGé¼Gäós name recognition at approximately 40%. As people get to know Jim Webb they like him. When people get to know the Real George Allen, the opposite is true. This continues to be true and the more you strive to introduce your neighbors and community to Jim Webb, the more his support will continue to grow.
Thank you for everything you do.

Tips for Getting Letters to the Editor Published
Want to increase the chances that a newspaper will publish the letter to the editor (LTE) that you write? Here are some suggestions:
Have a good closing for your letter. Finish the LTE with the idea that you most want readers to remember, such as the broader point that the specific details in your letter illustrate.
Don+óGé¼Gäót get discouraged if your letter isn+óGé¼Gäót published. Probably only a small portion of the LTEs that you write will appear in the paper. However, every LTE that you write can have an influence on the editorials that the newspaper staff members themselves write and on which other LTEs they print.
Apply your skills beyond letters to the editor. You can use your writing and analytical skills in a number of ways to help the Webb campaign. Do an op-ed piece (generally 600 to 800 words) for your local paper. Post a comment to a blog (see a listing of Virginia blogs at: http://www.raisingka...). Monitor your local radio and TV stations, and contact them and praise their balanced news coverage or criticize their biased reporting. Call a radio talk show and tell the listeners why you+óGé¼Gäóre supporting Jim Webb.
Published LTEs from This Week:
Voters should look at what they will get (Roanoke Times; LTE)
This November we get a chance to choose Jim Webb or George Allen to represent us in the U.S. Senate. The choice is really pretty easy.
If you like the direction our country is taking under the Bush administration, then vote for Allen.
He's part of the Republican rubber-stamp Congress that has tracked the party line so closely that Bush has had to veto only a single bill in his entire presidency. Allen even sided with Bush by voting against the bill.
On the other hand, if you believe that Congress should act as a separate and co-equal branch of government, think that "staying the course" might be similar to "driving off a cliff," and are sick and tired of the pandering, unaccountability, corruption and all-around sleaziness that currently seems to pass for leadership in Washington, then Webb is they guy who should get your vote.
Webb's the real deal. While Allen was at a dude ranch learning to be a fake cowboy, Webb was slogging through the jungles of Vietnam, receiving the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.

Want Webb? Write a check (Roanoke Times; LTE)
We all know what George Allen and Jim Gilmore did to the economy of our state when they were governor.
Now, Allen votes the majority of the time with what President Bush wants. We do not need another Bush flunky in the U.S. Senate.
I live on a fixed income. However, I believe that to get Jim Webb as our U.S. senator, we need to band together and support him with all the money we can afford to give to his campaign.
Marguerite Tucker Wade
Salem
Allen's comment hurt us all (Fauquier Times-Democrat; LTE)
When Senator George Allen insults and diminishes racial minorities, he does a lot more than reduce his own personal stature.
Since he speaks in the role of our elected representative, he diminishes each and every Virginian.
I write as the father of a fine son whom I adopted from India during my work there with Mother Teresa. Last week George Allen used a variation of the N-word to refer to my son. This makes me angry.
When he used - not once but twice - the French racial slur "macaca" (perhaps a word he learned from his North Africa-born mother), Allen did more than insult a dark-skinned fellow resident of our state. He showed us his readiness to use hate speech to divide us.
Virginia is a unique and diverse community that, ironically during the same week, was honored by Forbes Magazine as the best state in the U.S. for business. George Allen's racist remarks undermine this national accolade, and serve to discourage businesses from locating in Virginia.
This gentleman needs to find another job. I intend to work for Jim Webb, a Virginian we can be proud of, to replace him this November.

"...Here's what we may fairly conclude from Allen's macaca meltdown: He was a rude cad. And, despite his Confederate accoutrements, his cowboy boots, his chaw, his good ol' boy persona, Allen is missing the key ingredient in his Southern shtick: You gotta be a gentleman." - Houston Chronicle 08/18/06

Dear Mitch,
The first poll showing Jim Webb ahead in the polls was released Sunday Night. The Zogby Interactive -- Wall Street Journal poll puts the race at 47.9% Webb, 46.6% Allen. You've helped Jim Webb turn Virginia blue: see for yourself . Now it's up to us to keep it that way through November 7.
While this one poll puts Jim Webb in the lead, there's only one poll that matters: the one taken by the Secretary of the Commonwealth on November 7. There's no doubt that this is a competitive race, but in one respect we are clearly behind: name recognition. An early internal poll had George Allen's name recognition at over 90% and Jim Webb's name recognition at approximately 40%. We've closed the gap since that poll was taken, but there's too much more to do.
As people get to know Jim Webb they like him. When people get to know the Real George Allen, the opposite is true. The more you strive to introduce your neighbors and community to Jim Webb, the more his support will continue to grow.
That's why now is such an important time to talk to your neighbors, hit the blogs, call in to talk radio shows, and submit your positive letters to the editor about Jim Webb. Virginians are ready for a change politically and now they're looking for a new leader in the US Senate. You can introduce your neighbors to Jim Webb: war hero, Navy Secretary, Emmy-award winning journalist, bestselling author, champion of social justice, true Virginia gentleman.
Here's some information for you to share as we march towards Victory in November:
Introducing Jim Webb
FIGHTING FOR COUNTRY -- Jim Webb graduated from Annapolis and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and rifle platoon leader in Company D in the 1st Battalion of the 5th Marine Regiment during the Vietnam War. In addition to the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts, Jim Webb received the U.S. Navy's highest honor the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism," "courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty" for actions on July 10, 1969 in Vietnam.
BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND JOURNALIST -- Jim Webb won the Horan award for excellence in legal writing and went on to win an Emmy for his 1983 coverage of the U.S. Marines in Beirut. He authored "Fields of Fire" (considered by critics and veterans to be one of the best books on the Vietnam War). Webb has also written the follwing best--selling books: "A Sense of Honor," "A Country Such as This," "Something to Die For," "The Emperor's General," "Lost Soldiers," and "Born Fighting," Jim Webb also wrote the story and was the executive producer for the top box office movie "Rules of Engagement, " which starred Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson.
FIGHTING FOR FAMILY -- Jim Webb seen here with 3 of his 4 children. His son Jimmy, is an enlisted infantry U.S. Marine whose unit is bound for Iraq in late 2006. Webb's father was a career officer in the U.S. Air Force who served as a bomber pilot in World War II (flying B-17s and B-29s) and dropped cargo during the Berlin Airlift. Jim Webb has had a family member serve in every American military conflict.
FIGHTING FOR OUR DEFENSE -- Jim Webb served in the U.S. Congress as counsel to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs from l977 to l98l, becoming the first Vietnam veteran to serve as a full committee counsel in Congress. In 1984 Webb was appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. In 1987 Jim Webb was appointed US Navy Secretary where he expanded the role of women in high-level positions at the Department of the Navy. Webb resigned on principle as Naval Secretary in 1988 after refusing to reduce the Navy's force structure during congressionally-mandated budget cutting.
FIGHTING FOR OUR FUTURE -- "The lessons of my life have helped shape my vision for the way forward. As a Congressional committee counsel, I learned the importance of checks and balances against executive authority. As a Marine I learned never to put a life in harm's way unless absolutely necessary. My family's heritage is humble, but strong, and I was raised to believe that fairness was just as American as independence. We must provide for everyone in our community; this is not just our obligation, it is our duty." - Jim Webb
FIGHTING FOR TRUTH -- In a Washington Post article (September 4, 2002) before the Iraq War began, Jim Webb accurately warned us all about the problem of invading Iraq "without broad-based international support" and without an exit strategy; pointing out that: "The Iraqis are a multiethnic people filled with competing factions who in many cases would view a U.S. occupation as infidels invading the cradle of Islam." Webb went on to warn that while: "In Japan [After WWII], American occupation forces quickly became 50,000 friends. In Iraq, they would quickly become 50,000 terrorist targets." and that an "American war" with the Muslim world would allow the Chinese to isolate the United States diplomatically while hampering our ability to win the war against international terrorism.
FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE -- There are many monuments on the national mall, but only one statue of a black man. That statue is there because Jim Webb led the fight, to include an African American soldier in the Vietnam War Memorial on the National Mall. Also, during his first year of law school, Jim Webb began representing, pro bono, an African American who had been wrongly convicted of war crimes in Vietnam. Jim fought for six years to clear Sam Green's name, finally winning in 1978, three years after Green's suicide.
BORN FIGHTING -- In "Born Fighting: How the Scots--Irish Shaped America," Jim Webb traces the role of the Scots-Irish in the development of American history and culture. In researching and writing the book, Webb re-discovered his strong Democratic policy roots and connection with his hero and father of the modern Democratic Party, Andrew Jackson, who was also Scots-Irish. Webb cites the fiercely independent streak, individualism and political pragmatism of the Scots-Irish as central in defining American working class values and culture which is often overlooked by historians.
FIGHTING FOR EXCELLENCE -- Among Jim Webb's many awards for community service and professional excellence are the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal, the Medal of Honor Society's Patriot Award, the American Legion National Commander's Public Service Award, the VFW's Media Service Award, the Marine Corps League's Military Order of the Iron Mike Award, the John Russell Leadership Award, and the Robert L. Denig Distinguished Service Award. Jim Webb was also a Fall 1992 Fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics.

Dear Mitch,
I wanted to send a note to you today, as a supporter of Jim's campaign and someone who cares about the direction of this country. As many of you know, Jim's son Jimmy, an infantry Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, has been scheduled to be deployed to Iraq for a number of months. In the last few days, Jimmy learned he would be deploying next week. While Labor Day is the traditional kickoff to the Election and Jim already made many commitments to do events throughout the state, including events with Governor Tim Kaine and Governor Mark Warner, we hope you understand at this time that Jim wants to have time with his son. He will be taking Jimmy back to Camp Lejeune on Monday and will spend time with him and his unit before their deployment.
Jim wishes to emphasize that he is not unlike the thousands of parents and families who are sending their children and loved ones to war but that it is important to him that he has some private moments with his son before he deploys. Regardless of the political aspects of this war and your feelings towards it, it's important we keep our thoughts and prayers with the soldiers we are sending into harm's way.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
