We all want to talk about "Zero Tolerance" when it comes to certain crimes like domestic violence, drunk driving, drug dealing, gun running, gang activity. Why not racism? It's 2006 for God's sake. Maybe if we practiced "Zero Tolerance" to racism, we might one day be free of it.
George Allen is being suggested as being worthy of collecting the Thurgood Marshall Award, honoring a man who I'm sure, God rest his soul, is turning over in his grave at even the mere suggestion. The NAACP is fighting it, and I urge all to email dashley@tmsf.org to demand that this award be rescinded.
For the exact same reason that Robert Henderson should be denied employment as a state trooper in Nebraska, George Allen should be denied re-election as Virginia's U.S. Senator.
I was deeply concerned when I heard the news that George Allen, Senator from Virginia, would receive the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Award from your organization.
I do not believe that Senator Allen's record of service warrants that kind of recognition. If anything, his "service" represents quite the opposite. As Governor of Virginia, Allen cut funding for Virginia's state universities. Allen's voting record in the Senate shows that he has consistently voted against efforts to increase funding for college education opportunities, job training programs, Head Start, and the Community Development Block Grant, which are detrimental to our most disadvantaged citizens. He also voted against an increase in minimum wage, except, of course, when it would involve helping out the wealthy as well.
In light of the recent comments made by George Allen in Breaks, Virginia, his penchant for displaying a Confederate flag in his home, and his unwillingness as Virginia's Governor to declare Martin Luther King's birthday a holiday in Virginia without linking it with two Confederate generals, I would think your organization would think twice before welcoming him with open arms. His behavior, both in the past and in the present, has been anything but exemplary.
Please re-think your decision to award George Allen for service to minorities when there is little evidence to support that claim. There has to be someone else more deserving of this award.
Thank you for your time.
