Tom Davis wants to know how he's doing

Got a call a little while ago from a real person. Thank goodness it wasn't one of those dreaded robocalls. I hate those... never mind, that's off topic for now.
The caller said he was from the Davis campaign. Said his greeting. And then asked if I was going to support Davis this year. He may have worded it "can Davis count on your support".
However he phrased it, they're digging around for a vote count.
Not to give anything to the enemy, I gave him a "dunno" answer and that I'd have to look into it more.
Although I'm not sure if that's the best strategy. Should I have said "yes" to give them a false sense of security? "no" to put pressure on? Or leave it as nothing? Since it was an internal Davis poll I'm leaning toward the nothing or "yes" - but not sure.
Thoughts?

I would say no (Dan - 8/30/2006 8:01:49 PM)
I would say no. No sir, he can't count on my vote to support the War on Iraq, government waste, and the downfall of America. I suggest Tom Davis resign, taking lobbyist-loving, Christian Right suckling, anti-environment record with him. Then he can leave us good, decent hard working Americans alone. Have a nice day.
Pundits say it's Davis in a walk (Teddy - 8/30/2006 8:15:13 PM)
Most of the self-annointed pundits look at Davis' war chest and his highly touted record of bringing home goodies for the government workers who make up a big chunk of his constituency, and they say his seat is safe. Of course, they have no concept of bulldog Andy Hurst who is running against Davis.
But, so far, I've seen a lot of Tom Davis signs in people's yards, and not many for Andy despite the fact that Andy is running a bold attack campaign. I am suprised Davis is running a stealth poll; maybe he's more worried than we know??? When making calls for Webb I have found several cases of Yes to Webb but simultaneously supporting Davis (usually a govt worker, convinced Davis is a Good Guy). Andy needs to get Davis' faux moderate record on display, show he talks one way and votes the other and is NOT such a great friend of the govt worker. Is there a debate or two being scheduled?
What to tell a pollster? Mumble a No on Davis, and if that brings further questions about Why, then say it's time to throw all you republican rascals out. Why lie?
One pundit says it's NOT Davis in a walk! (Andrea Chamblee - 8/31/2006 12:25:55 AM)
In response to "Manassas,"
Mark Plotkin of WaPo says:
[T]here are two competitive House races, two incumbents, Frank Wolf and Tom Davis are facing serious challenges.... Maybe Virginia is not as Republican as people think. The demographics in Northern Virginia definitely are showing this. Just look at Tim Kaine's victory for governor.
Not this year (Alice Marshall - 8/30/2006 8:26:36 PM)
that is what I would say. The late Theda Henle said that for a poll for Broyhill in 1974. It rattles them because it implies you have voted for them before.
So far I haven't seen yard signs for any candidate, although three poeple in my precinct agreed to have Andy's signs in their yard.
Take it one step further (Smith is Blue - 8/30/2006 9:26:23 PM)
Tell them you are Leaning R, voted Davis before, but are now Leaning Hurst. That puts you in a highly targeted group and lets you waste some the aforementioned warchest by getting all the extra mailings.
P.S. Yard signs don't vote.
Telling Tom the Truth (Curlew - 8/30/2006 8:59:44 PM)
Davis is a Repugnican so the truth is something foreign to him. Each and every time I get a phone call from the Repugnicans (I am in Falls Church) I tell them flat out and honestly that I think they are the lowest form of life on earth and I wouldn't vote for one of them if it was required by Federal or state law. This usually results in a gasp on the other end of the phone (or at a metro stop) but the bastards know where I stand. In the 1997 gubenatorial campaign James Gilmore's wife showed up at the door one Saturday afternoon looking for a vote. In response I sent my 105 lb Rottweiler after her. Never had another Repugnican show up at the door the rest of the season.
Since when do you think the Repugnicans are kind to Democrats or worry about fairness?? They dont and they wont. They are all about winning at any cost. We need to develop and implement the same philosophy when they contact us. Tell them the truth. Its a totally foreign concept.
Not a Poll, it's a campaign. (pitin - 8/30/2006 11:43:04 PM)
There might not have been persuassion (b/c they are not there yet), but c'mon, we all know that wasn't a poll. Who get's volunteers to do ask, and no real poll only asks one question, they slip it in with a bunch of others.
Look, Davis is scarred, he has four phone banks a week, and already has paid canvassers.
As far as your question, I'd say "undecided" and stay on they're list. Yeah, it'll be annoying, because they will keep calling you, but better you then a truly undecided voter.
Certainly it was not a formal poll (Eric - 8/31/2006 9:36:34 AM)
The caller probably had a few options based on what my response was - asking for money, asking for votes, answering questions, etc. So there was some campaigning going down.
But, given his somewhat soft-sell to me, I'm pretty sure they are also doing an informal tally to gauge where they stand. In that sense I was happy not to provide any info. Had it been all about campaigning I suspect he would have worked harder... then again, maybe I just got a caller who lacked the enthusiasm to push hard.
What I said (Craig - 8/31/2006 1:07:03 AM)
First I said: "You are aware I'm a Democrat, right?"
But then he asked if I'd support Davis anyhow, to which I replied: "when he voted with the GOP on 85% of issues? Why vote for him when I have an eminently qualified Democrat in the running?"
He rattled off a bunch of pork, to which I replied: "a wise man once said, pork can't buy my love." and hung up.
Touche! (pitin - 8/31/2006 1:16:33 AM)
Has anyone else been getting these calls? I wonder how deep the Davis penetration is.
I wouldn't know... (YellowDog - 8/31/2006 9:20:12 AM)
We should all be too busy making phone calls and canvassing for Andy to know whether Davis is calling us to beg for support. Andy's Fairfax office is open and ready for our help.
Tom Davis votes with the GOP 90% of the time (Andrea Chamblee - 8/31/2006 8:21:30 PM)
I sorted the last 1700 votes Davis cast from the Post "Projects" page. He crossed the line to vote with the Dems a mere 6% of the time. He
votes like George Allen a lot, too,
