On August 19 2006, the Cincinnati Enquirer published an interview with GOP Congressman John Boehner, who is also the House Majority Leader.

Here is part of that interview:

Q. Moving onto the war in Iraq, how would you assess the current situation there?

A. Well, it+óGé¼Gäós difficult. There is no question. I was there right before the Fourth of July and met with a bunch of soldiers from my district. The problems are in Baghdad and within a 30 mile radius of Baghdad. The rest of the country is peaceful. Their oil production continues to increase. The new government is gaining strength. We are getting close to 150,000 to 200,000 Iraqi troops trained. Some of these units are very good.

The day I read the interview at Daily Kos, I found a lengthy list of hostile actions outside Baghdad.  I decided to look again today.  As you read these descriptions, keep thinking about Republican lies about the Iraq War, and why we need to elect someone who will not be content to draw a Senator+óGé¼Gäós salary check and do little except campaign for another office.

Aug. 29:

In Hillah, some 100 kilometres south of Baghdad, the Police Department's media spokesman told Deutsche Press-Agentur dpa that 12 unidentified bodies were discovered by police in towns around the region on Tuesday.

The spokesman added that the 12 bodies bore evidence of torture along with fatal bullet wounds. Some of the bodies had their hands bound and some were blindfolded.

Police forces from Baquba said that they had discovered six unidentified corpses around the city, located approximately 60 kilometers east of Baghdad. The sources added that all six corpses had their hands bound, bore evidence of torture and bullet wounds.

In another major incident, at least 27 Iraqis were killed and dozens were injured when a gas pipeline exploded near the city of Diwaniya in the Qadesiya Governorate, the province+óGé¼Gäós governor said Tuesday.  Qadesiya Governor Jaleel Khalil said in the provincial capital of Diwaniya, some 180 km from here, that +óGé¼-£highwaymen and robbers+óGé¼Gäó tampering with a gas pipeline near the city on Monday caused the pipeline to explode and burst into flames.

A major battle between the Iraqi army and Shiite Muslim militiamen in the southern city of Diwaniya left more than 40 dead, including 25 soldiers, and more than 90 injured, U.S. and Iraqi military sources said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene in which combatants fought through the streets using machine guns, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. At one point during the battle, which began Sunday night and raged into Monday, militiamen executed a dozen Iraqi soldiers who had run out of ammunition, Maj. Gen. Othman Ghanimi said.

The Iraqi army's inability to deal a swift and decisive blow to the militia uprising in Diwaniya raised questions about the readiness of tens of thousands of recently trained troops who are taking on increased security responsibilities nationwide.
