Photo of the Day - Staunton Ruffians

The photo of the day (click on pic to "embiggen") is of the ruffians who ran off tough guy Senator Allen from Staunton the other day. According to a source in Staunton, "Not only was the pro-Allen 'crowd' at Wright's small, the rest of the GOP herd was left wandering around Beverley Street wondering where their Senator was [after Allen stood them up]."

Meanwhile, my Staunton source also points us to comments by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-6th), who prompted cheers from a pro-Allen crowd by asking, "Are we going to run these Democrats right out of town?"  Well, my Staunton source finds this hilarious, as it was actually George Allen who was "run out of town" by a few people in banana, monkey, doctor, and grim reaper costumes.  In fact, my source relates the following story:

An apparent Republican female operative, glued to a cell phone and stalking angrily down the street away from City Hall, snapped at a couple of us that "It is canceled because of you."

I heard the same report from an official member of the greeting party for George Allen.

The bottom line here is this: if all it takes to run George Allen out of town is a few people in funny costumes handing out bananas, then he can definitely be defeated this November 7 by Jim "Born Fighting" Webb.  Let's work our butts off during the next 10 weeks, and we'll have ourselves a Senator who's not afraid to walk down main street of any town, city, or county in Virginia.

doesn't have Secret Service protection or he'd have all the protesters arrested.

But Why? (Teddy - 8/27/2006 4:07:36 PM)
So the republican woman with the cell phone said the Allen Rally in the Alley was cancelled because of the individuals in the photo? It just doesn't make sense. Talk about overreaction...Oh, yes, that's right. Allen's beloved Bush can't stand any form of dissent and screens attendees at his functions. Matter of National Security, right? So now Allen can't stand dissenters just like Bush? Everything is the fault of the liberals.

But seriously, doesn't this reaction strike anyone else as a bit over the top? Why?

He might be afraid of what he would say or do. (roadette - 8/27/2006 5:24:38 PM)
The netroots caught him with the winky-dinky too.

Good point (Kathy Gerber - 8/27/2006 6:04:34 PM)
Though it seems as if Allen has difficulty dealing with anything but adulation, this is indeed over the top, and it meshes with the efforts to have Allen appear to be a victim rather than a victimizer.  I'm not over Wadhams saying that Allen was the subject of scurrilous remarks.

This is a great story! (roadette - 8/27/2006 5:26:02 PM)
I'm afraid the campaign won't be this easy, but it sure is fun when the opposition candidate is (apologize in advance) ... shaking in his boots.
