Meet the Press Panel: Dems Take the House; "Macaca" Gives Them the Senate?

From this morning's edition of Meet the Press, the following discussion highlights the perilous state Republicans find themselves in with just 72 days to go until the election. I would particularly note conservative columnist Robert Novak's comment about George Allen "doing his best" to hand his Senate seat to Jim Webb. Keep talking, George!
MR. RUSSERT: None of us have a crystal ball, but educated hunch, 10 weeks out, House, Senate, what do you see?
MR. NOVAK: Well, if the election were held today, I can+óGé¼Gäót tell you what+óGé¼Gäós going to happen on Election Day, I would say that the Democrats will win 25 to 30 seats in the House. All they need is 12. I don+óGé¼Gäót think it+óGé¼Gäós+óGé¼GÇ¥my hunch is they+óGé¼Gäóre not going to be that bad, but that+óGé¼Gäós+óGé¼GÇ¥they start, they start way ahead.
It+óGé¼Gäós hard for them in the Senate to pick up the six seats. You can even count to five and not get to six, but Senator George Allen of Virginia is doing his best to try to, try to make that sixth seat viable for a Democratic win.
MR. RUSSERT: Albert Hunt:
MR. HUNT: I, I am in the incredible position of agreeing with almost everything Bob Novak said. Look, there+óGé¼Gäós an anti-Republican political storm out there. It+óGé¼Gäós a level two now, that+óGé¼Gäós 20, 25 seats and three or four Senate seats. It may, by Election Day, be a level four, which point they+óGé¼Gäóll win this+óGé¼GÇ¥the Democrats will win the Senate and they+óGé¼Gäóll pick up+óGé¼GÇ¥there will be members of the House looking up bios on November 8 to see who they are.
MR. RUSSERT: Gene Robinson:
MR. ROBINSON: A long time between now and Election Day. I, I actually think it probably tightens up a little bit from what it looks like now. I think maybe the Democrats do get the House. I+óGé¼Gäóm not sure about the Senate despite all of the macaca in Virginia. We+óGé¼Gäóll see.
MR. RUSSERT: Kate O+óGé¼GäóBeirne:
MS. O+óGé¼GäóBEIRNE: Given the historic trends and the, and the mood and the president+óGé¼Gäós ratings, you+óGé¼Gäód certainly rather be a Democrat right about now, but the Republicans hope to devote September to talking about national security, which has benefited them in the past. Unclear if it+óGé¼Gäóll be enough, and they+óGé¼Gäóve got to turn out disenchanted conservative voters.
What else are the "talking heads" saying today? Please use this as an open thread on that or any other topic...

I'm Worried (Teddy - 8/27/2006 4:15:01 PM)
I am uneasy that the conventional wisdom is coming down on the side of a Democratic victory. We thought Kerry had it in the bag, too. What this tells me is: look out for HUGE terror alerts, crushing National Security speeches by Cheney and the rest, even a war to be undertaken.
If you haven't read Suskind's One Percent Doctrine, please do so. It's all laid out there: the misuse of intelligence to support policy instead of providing the facts on which policy is to be developed; the truly cynical distortion of facts and the outright lies to support the pre-conceived notions of an immature President. Given the symbiosis between Osama and Bush, we may even have a genuine terror attack or another one of those infamous videos from bin Laden.
I do not believe this election is in the bag by any means.
I never assumed Kerry would win (Lowell - 8/27/2006 7:09:08 PM)
And I'm not taking anything for granted this year, that's for sure.
I agree. (cando - 8/27/2006 7:49:51 PM)
I think there could be a war in Iran, many Swift Boat ads and God knows what else. We cannot take anything for granted. (I also did not think Kerry would win), and we need lots of attorneys looking at election processes right now. What are the Dems doing on elections?
Teddy is right.....(no pund intended) (bladerunner - 8/27/2006 7:06:59 PM)
If anyone thinks this is in the bag for the Democrats they are sorely mistaken. The Dems are going to have to earn their stripes in the next 72 days--Dems have momentum, but keep in mind a lot of the GOPer's thrive when their backs are against the wall--and to win seats in Congress just because Bush has F'd up everything is unrealistic. The Dems must proceed like it's going to be a tough battle, and I think they will.
I expect candidates like Andy Hurst to take the fight to Tommy Davis. And Teddy is right, and according to whoever on the Meet the Press Show, the GOPers will be doing everything they can to scare the US public. The infamous Bush/Rove/Allen "Politics of Fear". Remember Allen has said he likes a good fight--he'll turn into a rabid racoon.(what he really means by good fight is that he'll lie, do and say anything for a victory) That being said, if we do gain all those seats we better hit the ground fast, the American public will expect that!!!!!!!!!!! Go Andy Hurst.
RE: Inside Washington (JPTERP - 8/27/2006 7:13:16 PM)
I think that Inside Washington may have had something about this today as well. I believe the transcript will be online tomorrow.
Macaques (Andrea Chamblee - 8/28/2006 12:51:40 AM)
A friend of mine just returned from a round-the-world sail as crew on a freight ship. She delivered cargo to many French speaking places in the Pacific. She was still sailing during the Allen incident and had not heard of it. She explained that on one stop, she visited a public park with many macaques. They are smart and strong animals and they grab visitors, looking for food and jewelry, pulling hair and tearing clothes in the process. They grab pockets, pull off shirts and pull open pants. She was warned to remove her jewelry and they still tore out some of her hair to get her plastic hairclip. She later learned that this is called a "mugging" by the "macacas." She said the french-speakers she met on this leg of the trip called muggers "Macacas" because of this. Based on Allen's heritage and her experience, for Allen to continue to pretend he meant something else is just a lame, lazy lie.
I saw Novak on CSPAN at some Republican panel thing, (summercat - 8/28/2006 5:18:41 AM)
where he said he didn't think the Dems would take the House or Senate. I don't think we should let down our guard. The Dems still need to get out a more cogent message and do more targeted outreach to independents. Also, Dems have a disturbing tendency to blow off voting--in a close election, that could sink their candidates.
But, negativity aside--it's great that the possibility of a Dem victory in one or both houses in '06 is even being suggested.
Novak and others (Gordie - 8/28/2006 9:17:19 AM)
Listening to Republicans speak lately it sounds like the Demo's are going to win. Is this another trap to put us to sleep and get us over confident. Keep on fighting to Nov.8
