Albemarle Democrats' BBQ

I really, really try to avoid the Charlottesville area on the weekend because the trip feels too much like another workday.  But yesterday we had a pleasant time - except for the heat which at times was oppressive.  We first went to the Cheese Shop in Stuarts Draft, then down to Crozet to visit a friend. Then on to the BBQ.

Great food and music, and lots of people at this event in Crozet.  Expect some pix and video from Mark.  I don't know where he is going to put them; here or maybe on his Heartland of Virginia blog.  There are several more picnics and BBQs scheduled in the 5th CD, and I hope we can go to one or two more of them.
We really enjoyed spending some time chatting with
Edward Strickler in a relaxed atmosphere.

Nelson Dems Dave and Leah Cole, and Connie Brennan and John Hesselbart also attended.

We saw Greg Kane and Dan Gray who brought a supply of new signs, bumper stickers and fliers.  Dan was nice enough to snap a photo of a couple of us, but hey, we look like thugs so I'm not posting it.

Fred Hudson of the Fifth CD Democratic Committee was the MC, and the auction was lots of fun. Here's a brief news clip. Speakers were David Toscano, Al Weed, Leslie Byrne and Creigh Deeds.  Mark filmed Al's speech so hopefully everyone can see it.

Leslie Byrne reminded us that it was Women's Equality Day, a day to remember the passage of the 19th amendment.  She talked about the sacrifices made by people like the women imprisoned at Occoquan workhouse.  Eighty-five years ago their banners read DEMOCRACY BEGINS at HOME.

That's right.  And thanks to heroes like the suffragists, women can OWN PROPERTY, and VOTE.

A TV movie, Iron Jawed Angels, on these events is available at netflix.

This struggle is not completely over.  A few years ago we fell in love with a cabin in Amherst.  When my partner called to ask some questions about it, the male real estate agent said, "Little lady, you don't want that place.  It's for hunters."

Of course she replied, "Oh, I am so sorry.  My mistake. I am sorry to waste your time which is at least 30% more valuable than mine. Bye."

NOT.

Thank you, suffragists.  We owe you a debt of gratitude. And thank you, Leslie Byrne, for reminding us.

And since I didn't get any decent pix from the BBQ, here is our WOMEN'S SHED, built with our WOMEN'S HANDS, on our WOMEN'S PROPERTY, letting you all know how we will cast our WOMEN'S VOTE.

Thanks Kathy for (Mark - 8/27/2006 2:56:18 PM)
writing this up. I was too tired last night to post anything, then stayed up too late due to 'nervous energy'. Thus, the sleeping in behavior today. I am catching up however.

I am working on the photos right now. I edited the video into parts last night, due to the size of the file. I am unsure whether I should post them here or do a diary of my own.

Kathy, are you still here?

Mark

You can e-mail me the photos if you want... (Lowell - 8/27/2006 3:21:10 PM)
and I'll post them here. Or, you can do your own diary, either way.  Thanks.

Whoops, I forgot (Lowell - 8/27/2006 3:21:46 PM)
My e-mail address is lowell@raisingkaine.com

And here I thought (Mark - 8/27/2006 3:39:27 PM)
that I was sending you too MUCH email!

J/K.... I think I will make a photo companion diary and post it linking back to Kathy's.

Halfway here... (Kathy Gerber - 8/27/2006 6:22:59 PM)
I'm working outside and running in and out - right now it's 6:40ish local time.

It sounds like you two have it taken care of, but I have some storage space, too.  Probably not the fastest...
