George Allen made some disparaging remarks beyond those of race during his infamous comments n Breaks Virginia. So I thought I+óGé¼Gäód take a look at what the real Virginia looks like. All figures, unless otherwise specified, are from the mid-decade US Census of estimates of 2005.
Virginia had 7,567,465 people. Let+óGé¼Gäós see what they looked like.
First by geography. Allen apparently doesn+óGé¼Gäót think N Virginia, which is increasingly Democratic, is part of the real Virginia.
Fairfax County 1,006,529
Prince William County 348,588
Loudoun County 255,518
Arlington County 195,965
Fairfax City 21,963
Falls Church City 20,781
Alexandria 135,337
Manassas 37,569
Manassas Park 11,622
Total N VIRGINIA 2,033,872
Percent in N Virginia 26.9
Hmm, sure looks like a substantial portion of the population of the Old Dominion is from what some have referred to as the People+óGé¼Gäós Republic of N Virginia. As far as state leadership, the following statewide elected public officials came from the jurisdictions above in recent years: Chuck Robb, Mark Warner and Don Beyer.
Racial figures for Virginia are only available from the 2004 estimate, but are also interesting (the first percentage is from Virginia, the 2nd for sake of comparison for the US as a whole):
White 73.8 80.4
Black 19.9 12.8
Native Amer/Alaskan native 0.3 1.0
Asian 4.4 4.2
Hawaiian /Pacific Islander 0.1 0.2
Two or more races reported 1.5 1.5
Hispanic 5.7 14.1
White non-Hispanic 68.7 67.4
officially in 2004
Foreign born 8.1 11.1
In otherwords, Virginia has more people of Asian background - including those of Indian descent such as Sidarth - than does the US as a whole.
Sounds to me like George Allen really doesn+óGé¼Gäót know the population of the state he purports to represent in the US Senate.
Explains the traffic!!!
But, yeah.. George Allen doesn't know anything about Virginia.
He caters to the wrong crowd, and there should be a real campaign in NOVA to show everyone how much Allen cares about them.
