Bush/Allen Protest Report

By: Lowell

We came.  We saw. We conquered.  Or, for the benefit of famed Latin scholar "I. Publius," one could say "veni, vidi, vici."  Ha.

Seriously, though, late this afternoon, around 35-40 Webb supporters and about 15-20 Allen supporters gathered about a mile from Ed Gillespie's house near Mt. Vernon, where GeorgeBushAllen was/were holding a fundraiser and celebrating his/their 97% agreement on pretty much everything.  We couldn't get close enough to hear the conversation between George and George, but my guess is that it went something like this:

George Allen:  Oh, George.
George Bush: Oh, George.
George and George together:  Oh, George, I wish I knew how to quit you!

Photos of the event are available here, with more likely on the way (not to mention Kenton Ngo's video of the event...can't wait for that!).  Great work by the Mt. Vernon Democrats in getting a big crowd together and kicking the Republicans' pasty little butts.  Not physically, of course, we Democrats are too peaceful to do such a thing.  Still, I'm sure that el Presidente was not too happy to see twice the number of Democrats as Republicans when his motorcade pulled into Ed Gillespie's neighborhood around 4:40 PM (between 5 minutes and 55 minutes earlier than scheduled).

By the way, I hear that there was a rather heated argument between a Mt. Vernon Democrat and a Bush supporter.  According to eyewitnesses, the Bush supporter "incoherently, mindlessly and inarticulately expressed her support for the President, emotionally telling the Democrat to go live in one of the other 160 countries if he didn't support Bush or the troops."

Brilliant!  What an intellectually powerful, emotionally compelling case for that wonderful political philosphy known as "conservatism."  America, live in it the way WE say you should - or leave it!  Sort of like what George Allen said to S.R. Sidarth about "welcome to America and the real world of Virginia..."  Ah, Republicans, we wish we knew how to quit 'em.

P.S. No TV cameras were there today, just Democratic bloggers, the Washington Post and the Connection Newspapers.  Apparently, Dick Wadhams still hasn't found that Republican blogger he needs to jumpstart his campaign!  Ha.

[UPDATE:  Apparently, WJLA-7 and/or Channel 8 showed up after I had left.  Also, I hear that a Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter was there too. I look forward to their reports.]

Comments

Thanks for the Report; Here's Another Ryan Lizza Tidbit (PM - 8/23/2006 6:42:20 PM)
http://www.tnr.com/d...

Ryan Lizza, senior editor at the New Republic, has culled his favorite parts of Jennifer Allen’s book Fifth Quarter, memoirs of her growing up with the late coach and the current senator.  Noting that she has since recanted, saying the book was a dramatization, he notes the following passage from her book: “My brother George sat with me for hours by the pool one day, measuring out parcels of his past [for Jennifer's book], all the while reminding me to remain faithful to the facts. (page 239)”

Reports All Over:Dems Won Big Today (kevinceckowski - 8/23/2006 7:14:35 PM)
And from the Clarendon Metro Stop/ Clarendon Farmer's Market, report came in that Jim and the Dems had 2:1 supporters to Allen's group of misguided staff (Did they PAY Mary and Dick to show up?) Way to go Jim and the DEMS!!!  The motorcade went by and poor King George staring like a deer in the headlights looked at our crowd of angry but polite (something they really need to learn)demonstrators.

We held down the fort here at Clarendon, and pumped out the literature. It was a good day. Soooooooooo many people grabbed lit, just wanted it, like a feeding frenzy.  I would say folks were really connecting to a WIN in November.  Ten men at least and the same number of women said they didn't need the lit, he has my vote.  Another man said what is "With the macaca statement?" We both laughed and talked politics.  A LOT OF INTEREST IN OUR CANDIDATE FOLKS!

I only think things are going to get even stronger for Jim and the Dems in a few weeks.  You can see the momentum building.  We handed out 100 + grip cards easily, in less than 1.5 hours.

O/T Just to those who thought Macaca story had no legs (Doug Garnett-Deakin - 8/23/2006 7:37:48 PM)
Just enjoyed 5 minutes of Christ Matthews joking around about Senator Macaca and what an idiotic, mean thing it was to say.

There were stories on (lwumom - 8/23/2006 8:49:14 PM)
CNN and NBC Nightly News as well. NBC showed Siddarth's video.

Howard Dean quote about Felix on Hardball... (Loudoun County Dem - 8/23/2006 9:41:37 PM)
See it here - http://www.youtube.c...

"I served with George Allen when he was Governor. I don't think he belongs in public service.  There are Republicans who are capable and smart, thoughtful people, and he's not one of them. "

BTW, Great pics, I wish I could've been there with...

Also, were any of you aware that Eugene Delgaudio was among you? He is the Felix fan in the middle of this pic. He is one of the biggest homophobes in the commonwealth, You can read about him here in the WaPo or here in dkospedia. You may need to take an extra shower...

GREAT JOB ALL!!!

I have to admit (DanG - 8/23/2006 11:06:51 PM)
I didn't like Dr. Dean as the head of the DNC at first.  But recently he's been really sensible, decent, and an all around good representative for our party.  We haven't heard anything crazy from him in a while.

Nope (Doug in Mount Vernon - 8/23/2006 11:49:45 PM)
That is not Mean Eugene!

Who is it? (Loudoun County Dem - 8/24/2006 12:03:54 AM)
Looks just like Delgaudio (I've had to work events near him several times although he usually has on an ugly orange hat).

Weak Chin Man! (Bubby - 8/24/2006 9:25:55 AM)

Dean on Webb (martha - 8/24/2006 5:02:20 AM)
Dean also came back w/ a comment about Webb...making sure Webb's name was mentioned before Mathews went on to another topic. Throughout the entire macaca incident Webb's name should have been mentioned over and over by news reporters and often it was just "Allen's opponent".

How long were you there, Lowell? (Susan Mariner - 8/23/2006 7:46:14 PM)
Is it your impression that much of the crowd was still on site when the news crews arrived?

When I left, I think at least half the people (Lowell - 8/23/2006 8:00:10 PM)
were gone.  I was there for about an hour.

Thanks for the pix! n/t (lwumom - 8/23/2006 8:11:49 PM)

Funny! (Rebecca - 8/23/2006 8:17:34 PM)
There could be a lot of funny campaign signs this season. I like "Macacas for Webb".

With all due respect... (Ingrid - 8/23/2006 9:12:37 PM)
I don't.  I prefer "Welcome to the real world of Virginia".  Sorry, but when you have been called the m-word yourself, there is nothing funny about it.

Correction (Rebecca - 8/23/2006 9:23:41 PM)
I'm not advocating this. I actually saw a person holding this sign in a picture posted here at the site. I liked it because it was at an Allen rally and it was "in your face".

Washington Post Story (JPTERP - 8/23/2006 8:27:02 PM)
Makes mention of the protest. . .

http://www.washingto...

A total absence of reason... (Kathy Gerber - 8/23/2006 8:59:19 PM)
"It's great to have the president in Virginia, raising substantial amounts of money so we can fight off the scurrilous attacks by our opponent and his leftist allies," campaign manager Dick Wadhams said in an interview.

Give me a break!  This was about ONE scurrilous attack out of pump-and-dump boy's lips and it looks like he and hot Wad think money can fix anything.

Ridiculous.... I'll tell you what, if Jim Webb himself had stooped so low, no amount of money could bring me to defend such an utter lapse in judgment and failed leadership.

And in my sputtering I forgot this.. (Kathy Gerber - 8/23/2006 9:03:01 PM)
scur·ri·lous  adj.

  1. Given to the use of vulgar, coarse, or abusive language; foul-mouthed.

  2. Expressed in vulgar, coarse, and abusive language.

This is Freudian reaction formation.  How embarassing.

Accountability (Alicia - 8/23/2006 9:56:33 PM)
They just prove over and over that Allen has none.  They try to divert and turn it around to blast Webb- and it won't work.

Allen did this to himself, all by himself.  For chrissakes - he stared right AT the video camera when he said it.  Not a smart bully.

Great timing for Allen's Macca comment (bladerunner - 8/23/2006 9:15:02 PM)
I've been vacationing this last week, but glad to see that Allen is still in the stew pot. I guess it's a good thing he said this in AUGUST when news people are clamaring for news. It ain't going away.

Wish I could have been there (Greg - 8/23/2006 9:40:24 PM)
Was a bit too early for me to get down there since I was at the office.

But hopefully it will get some decent press coverage...

RE: Front page . . . (JPTERP - 8/23/2006 11:33:16 PM)
Another A01 story on the Washington Post.  Sorry Dick Wadhams, the Post won't be bullied.  I was wrong to doubt my hometown newspaper.

It seems that the Allen campaign is doing everything it can to keep Allen's racism front and center in the public view and distract us from issues such as Iraq and the economic well-being of the middle class.  It's still a losing strategy, but I don't blame them.  Allen's stance on these other issues stinks too.

RE: More news (JPTERP - 8/24/2006 12:49:36 AM)
And another House Editorial from the Post

http://www.washingto...

And an RTD story.  Apparently the $1,500 a head fundraiser was attended by at least 250 guests (I wonder if George's new neighbor Tom Delay was anywhere to be seen).

http://www.timesdisp...

Lets get this right. (Bubby - 8/24/2006 9:35:24 AM)
"Never in modern times has a statewide office holder and candidate been so vilified." Dick Wadhams, Allen Campaign

Dear Dick:
Never has a statewide office holder and candidate been so unqualified.

News8/WJLA cameras biased? (snolan - 8/24/2006 10:51:05 AM)
I woke up this morning to spotty coverage on News8 where they were only showing footage of Allen and Bush supporters.  Not many of them (perhaps 10 people on a busy road side).

They also ran a story claiming that Allen finally apologized directly and showed footage of Sidarth acknowledging the call.

Warning: news8.net has gobs of cookies, semi-malicious Java scripts, and pop-up/pop-under advertizing; may not be safe for users of Internet Explorer.

Sen. George Allen Gives Direct Apology

I can't find a clip of the footage of the Allen supporters, but the mentioned nothing about the protest.  Sorry.

The press seems to think the numbers of supporters and protesters was balanced... what the heck?

Allen and Andrew Young according to Cal Thomas (VA Breeze - 8/24/2006 11:24:20 AM)
Now Cal Thomas has joined the fray-equating Allen's comments to Andrew Young. (pg. B9 in 8/23/06 issue of Va Pilot)Well, Cal-Andrew Young has lost his job. He also talks about Howard Cosell's comments years ago-and Howard lost his job. Worth noting-a fact Cal seems clueless about-there is a BIG different between someone working for a corporation vs an elected offical who is charged with representing all the people of the Virginia. Well, maybe Cal's point is: George Allen, you are going to lose your job!

COMMENT HIDDEN (I.Publius - 8/24/2006 1:19:17 PM)

That's Rich Coming From You (Mark - 8/24/2006 2:19:00 PM)
You think Bush, Allen, Goode, et. al. have class? Wow, you are more deluded than I thought you were.

None of them have any class, otherwise they wouldn't do the things they do. Calling out an American citizen and telling him 'Welcome to America'? Using a slur to refer to a Webb staffer? Being all hat and no cattle?

And that's just George "Macaca" Allen (R-abortion pill).

Seriously, if you weren't so one-subject and sad, you would be funny, in a sad way.

COMMENT HIDDEN (I.Publius - 8/24/2006 3:55:56 PM)

You should be ashamed of yourself (Mark - 8/24/2006 5:06:08 PM)
That comment in  no way qualifies as rational, reasoned discourse. Good day to you sir.

Why do you act like such an ass to people you don't even know? (thegools - 8/25/2006 10:33:35 PM)
Being critical of one's views is one thing, but stereotyping a huge swathe of the electorate with a caricature that is far from true for this writer is short-sited and ignorant.  Why not show some decency?

We are all Americans, Virginians, and we have much more in common than we have differences.

i publius (pvogel - 8/24/2006 6:05:32 PM)
you said

Democrats, on the other hand, find it much easier to haul in truckloads of smelly deadbeats who hang outside welfare offices.

Sorry, pubman... I worked 28 years for the good old usps, and suck at the trough of a retirement that INCREASES every year!!!!!

The ??? is,  will the folks who got dissed vote in november  in greater numbers than the racist crackers allen is countin on?????
If they dont, I fear The USA  willmove into 1935 in the nazi watch.

Today, we are at Nov 1934 in the nazi watch. I think Bush reads old Hitler speeches to find something to emulate.

We're lucky that Bush lacks the oratory skills of despots (RayH - 8/25/2006 12:20:10 AM)

like Mussolini and Hitler. Even if he suddenly learned to inspire people, I think he'd have a hard time breaking the 50% mark on his public approval rating now. He's nearly the lamest duck I've ever seen.
