Some sad news from the business world. Jeffrey Prosser, an international phone-sex operator who has donated large sums of money to the campaign of Missouri Senator Jim No-Talent, filed for bankruptcy in the Virgin Islands a few weeks ago. If you aren't familiar with Prosser, you should be.
Prosser, whose company operated many "dial-a-porn" services, and his wife Dawn gave $4,200 to Talent's reelection campaign in 2005, as reported by Fired Up! Missouri. For the 2006 election cycle the Prossers also donated $8,400 to Senator George Felix "Macaca" Allen's reelection campaign and $10,000 to Rep. Roy Blunt's "Rely on Your Beliefs" PAC. Jump down for more on what Repugs apparently mean by family values.
As reported on the Political Videos blog, Prosser made his fortune with partner Cornelius "Neil" Prior, another big Repug donor, in the 1990s, after FCC regulations banned obscene telephone conversations in the U.S.:
Their company, Atlantic Tele-Network (ATN), purchased the Guyana state telephone company, GT&T, and began routing phone sex traffic to the South American nation, where they were free of FCC regulations. Phone sex advertisements for Guyana often carry a 011-592 phone number, instead of a 1-900 number. Interent searches for Guyana phone sex turn up phrases such as "hot sexy gay men," "college coeds chat line," "kinky sex," "enforced feminization," and many others. A 1995 FCC document listed Guyana as one of the world's worst offenders of "dial-a-porn" services.
So why is it that "family values" Repug candidates seem to have no problem taking money from people who earn a living running phone-sex businesses? Even after being told of the source of these funds, neither Talent, Allen or Blunt have said they would return the money, as far as I can tell. In fact, a spokesman for Blunt told Roll Call that Blunt would not return the money because "the funds were given in a 100 percent legal and ethical fashion."
But the story has something of a happy ending, in a sort of "reap what you sow" kind of way. After Prior and Prosser split up their partnership, Prosser assumed ownership of the Virgin Islands phone company, Vitelco, under the aegis of another Prosser company, Innovative Communication Co., LLC. More from Political Video:
Prosser was forced into bankruptcy after ICC shareholders sued him for diverting cash from the sale of ICC stock, without their consent, to purchase the Belizean telephone company, BTL. A shareholder suit alleges that "defendant ICC's conduct was outrageous, demonstrated fraudulent and evil motive and was in such conscious disregard of the rights of [the shareholders] to be deemed willful and wanton." Prosser's personal debts are estimated at $200 million, and his companies are conservatively estimated to have debts of $400 million.
Now that Prosser is getting what he deserves, what about Jim No-Talent and George Felix "Macaca" Allen? They spout off wingnut talking points about the immorality of gay marriage while happily taking money from people running phone lines for "hot sexy gay men." They talk about promoting sex abstinence programs as the only type of birth control while running their campaigns with money earned on a "college coeds chat line." They pretend to clamp down on obsence phone conversations while turning a blind as their donors exploit big loopholes to continue earning billions off of phone-sex businesses. It's time to give these hypocritical, do-nothing Repugs what they deserve: a boot outta Congress.
But any way you cut it, his base doesn't appreciate drugs like PlanB. At best it promotes sexual behavior. At worst it's an abortion. All bad things in their book. And certainly not the family values they believe in.
And now a world class phone sex operator is sliding him some coin. Nice. Great family values for his base.
Perhaps Allen will hire this guy to produce his robocalls. Now that would get people's attention.
This news needs to stay fresh in the macaca madness trail...bloggers and the Webb camp did it once, let's do it again!
I do not agree with the political agenda of that group, but I do think that they have a right to know when they're being duped. Those folks don't go on Kos, so there should be other outlets we may address as well, in order to impact them.
