Personal responsiblilty

As this scandal has turned into a worldwide wildfire, George Allen keeps throwing glasses of gasoline onto the flames.  He issues lame non-apologies and shifting (and worsening) excuses.

George Allen needs to exhibit personal responsibility for his actions.  No more non-apologies with the word "if", no more shifting the burden to the victim.  No more lame excuses, statements that still take swipes at your opponent about where they have or haven't been in Virginia, or anything else. Just man up and say these simple words to Webb's staffer: "I'm sorry I offended you."

And I don't mean in a press release.  Be a man, pick up the phone, and call the person you've obviously offended.

That's the first step in moving past this episode. Until he does that, his responses are just fuel for the fire.
On that note, buried in the latest Hotline story on Allen's new excuse is this gem:

John Reid, Allen's Senate communications director, said in a statement: "I don't think George Allen would ever try to publicly embarrass or demean a young person even if that person was working on an opposing campaign. The Senator has apologized sincerely and repeatedly over the last two days to the young man and to the public in general."

Can somebody find me any indication that Allen apologized directly to the young man?  A phone call where he said "I'm sorry to have offended you"?  I can't find this anywhere.

Raising Kaine has done a superb job (Rebecca - 8/16/2006 4:08:18 PM)
I have to hand it to Raising Kaine. They have done an excellent job in creating an echo chamber for this. Huffington Post is still running something on this on the front page. The WAPO still has a front page article and an opinion piece on this. I think this one has legs. You folks are awesome!

I second that (pitin - 8/16/2006 4:22:28 PM)
Lowell and the team here at RK have done an excellent job and made the Virginia Blogosphere proud.

Yes, but I Pubes is not pleased (Lowell - 8/16/2006 7:10:40 PM)
...and that makes me very sad. :(

It only bothers people (Alicia - 8/16/2006 7:49:26 PM)
who are offended by blatant racism.

Didn't figure it would bother I Pub.  He's almost as mean as Allen!

Send letters to editors, email to program directors, etc (RayH - 8/16/2006 4:28:58 PM)

We can use the blogosphere as a catalyst for change, and an impetus for better media coverage too.
