Allen did, however, leave several yard signs behind on his swing through town. Allen's supporters, though, must have been a little upset that Dickenson County was the proud home of so many Webb for Senate signs.
In the locations where Webb signs were not near houses, they have now vanished, and been replaced by Allen signs. In places where they were near houses, Allen's people put one of his signs directly in front of and behind the Webb sign.
This is despicable behavior and was uncalled for. Several times I have placed signs beside of an opponent+óGé¼Gäós sign, but I have never removed or obstructed someone else+óGé¼Gäós sign. These activities are completely reprehensible and Allen+óGé¼Gäós supporters really need to grow up.
The good thing about acts like this is that they really tick off volunteers. And when folks here in Southwest Virginia get mad, we do not sink to Allen+óGé¼Gäós level and do the same thing. Instead, we go out and work twice as hard on what really matters +óGé¼GÇ£ beating him on Election Day. A wise man once told me that if signs could vote, campaigning would be much easier.
Tonight, I have already had three calls from people wanting to get call sheets and asking how they can help elect Jim Webb. So, good job George Allen supporters, thanks to your high school-level antics, Democrats are fired up.
Let's not let them steal the election the same way. Let's be vigilant. Our Sheriff here in Cumberland Co. is a Democrat, and he has been informed everytime signs have been stolen. We also published a LTE spelling out the penalties for those stealing signs from private property.
I hope to get videotape evidence this fall and ask that the person(s) be arrested or cited.
We have a long-standing custom of placing them next to the other guy's sign here in Dickenson County.
And, local Republicans have been looking at our Webb signs since June and never touched one.
Then today, when Allen's people came into town, suddenly Webb signs disappear. Hmm...I wonder who took them?
I have thought it would be sweet to put up another big sign and to sit off in the woods at night (when the signs invariably disappear) with my shotgun. Then when the guy/gal is up the tree tearing my sign down, I would from the shadows cock my gun....SCHICK-SCHICK! Then shout something like,"WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON MY LAND!!"
......then I would either watch them run quickly away with stinking pants or I'd call the police.
A picture, or better yet video, would be awesome for our effort. That sort of thing could even end up on broadcast news on a dull day. YouTube and blogs would certainly have a field day. And it could even be used as evidence against the thieves.
So by all means, put on your camo outfit and hide in those woods.
Allen and his people are truly typical Republican Thieves....maybe we should have that slogan with a counter so we can keep track of how many signs they are stealing....
This is the type of behavior that is getting them booted out of Congress!!
If someone does decide to nab them shoot them with digital cameras and then put the pics or footage up so they can be revealed....you also might want to call the cops and charge them. They don't have time to pass a bill greanting their sign stealers "immunity" from the law....
Buzz...Buaa...
And the stealth version:
No warning weasel catcher
ROFL!
My neighbor's Harris Miller sign was taken down at least 20 times last spring. Who coulda done that? Hmmmmmmmmm.
Y'all are a joke. This will be your excuse when Webb loses by 20 points. Nice set-up.
Anyone considering these sorts petty crimes (stealing, vandalism) should be discouraged. If they can disuaded from acting that is best. If not, these vandals/thieves who do act should be caught and punished. It is stealing, vandalism, and un-democratic. Not to mention that it undoes the hard work of well meaning people (like me). I have put up hundreds and hundreds of signs. I have never pulled any opponent's signs down (except to clean up after the election, when I clean up all signs.) But it has always annoyed me to see signs stolen and destroyed- no matter the candidate.
When someone voluntarily picks up litter on the side of the road one is allowed to be selective when deciding what trash they wish to remove
Also, do you spend an equal amount of time picking up real garbage (bags, bottles, wrappers...) off the roads? That to me is a real service, for a real problem. Ripping up signs before an election (I.E. stifling something that is ubiquitous with the democratic process) seems well....truly un-democratic.
I just wish people would leave the work of volunteers be. I work hard getting signs up and promoting my candidates. Also, I never pull down opposing candidates' signs. It is a sign of respet for the hard work of others like me.
If one really has a problem with such law breaking, I wish people would use the official channels (highway department, cops, etc.). If one really has the time and energy to rip up one candidates signs, why not use that destructive energy and transform it into a positive effort to support and promote a candidate of choice?
This tit-for-tat selective "litter clean up" stuff, serves no one, but only sews bad blood, wastes people's time & energy, and wastes the candidates' money.
Cheers.
For some reason unknown to me most of our local DEMs abide by the law, while the local GOP does not- the result is we end up pulling many many more GOP signs- hundreds. Most of the signs of candidates we support are funneled into a sign relocation/adoption program; the others are tossed (need any tomato stakes?)
Again- signs on Virginia's highways are illegal- If you don't like them or their message stop and yank a few. I wish the well meaning political campaign volunteers would stop littering our highways with trash to be picked up later at taxpayer expense. Who can post the most illegal signs is a campaign game I don't play
When I have done this I do it in broad daylight. If people stop and threaten to call the cops we offer them use of our cell phones. We always take pictures of the signs before we yank them and always carry a copy of the sign ordinance.
BTW- we do have a horse in this race- my great grandmother and her garden club buddies were instrumental in pushing for a local sign ordinance. As a result we have no billboards in this county, which is kinda nice.
Please don't assume this is the extent of my civic involvement, or that I have tons of free time on my hands.
