So Much for "Homeland Security"

According to a study commissioned by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN) and released today, "The world faces an estimated 50% chance of a nuclear, biological, chemical or radiological attack over the next five years."  As if that's not bad enough, "Over ten years this risk expands to as much as 70%."  Not good.

More cheery news from the Lugar report?  How about this: "...for the foreseeable future, the United States and other nations will face an existential threat from the intersection of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction."

In other words, we are not, repeat NOT, winning the "war on terror."  Our homeland is not, repeat NOT more secure.  And we are not, repeat NOT safer thanks to the policies of of the Bush Administration and Republican Congress.

Meanwhile, according to a new CIA study, "Iraq may prove to be an even more effective training ground for Islamic extremists than Afghanistan was in Al Qaeda's early days, because it is serving as a real-world laboratory for urban combat."  That's right, Iraq, which was supposed to be a beacon of democracy and freedom in the Middle East by now, has instead cost us over 1,700 young Americans killed, thousands more wounded, hundreds of billions of dollars, and a Middle East that is even less stable than before.  Congratulations, Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz and friends!

Oh, by the way, I'll give you all one guess as to where all these new Islamic extremists are coming from.  That's right, they're pouring forth from our great ally and oil supplier, Saudi Arabia.  Reportedly, Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware was "told by American officials during a recent trip to Iraq that a 'disproportionate number' of the foreign fighters now active there came from Saudi Arabia."  You know, the country whose de facto ruler was last spotted holding hands and kissing President Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas?

In sum, nearly four years after that terrible day of 9/11/2001, the United States and the rest of the world are at high or even increased risk of a terrorist attack using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) .  Thanks to the politices of the Bush Administration, all we have really succeeded in doing during those years is to shift the center of terror from Afghanistan to Iraq, which prior to our invasion was not connected to anti-American terrorism at all.

And Saudi Arabia -- the country that produced both Osama bin Laden and 15 of 19 hijackers on 9/11 -- remains the prime source of new terrorists.  Yet four years after 9/11, the United States has done nothing to reduce its oil import dependence on Saudi Arabia.  Well, isn't that a big suprise coming from George "Failed Oil Man" Bush and Dick "Halliburton CEO" Cheney?  Short answer?  No.

I've lived and worked in Saudi Arabia and can tell you the Saudi Government and Citizens are a friend to the USA. The Problem with Saudi Arabia is class warfare of not sharing the Oil Profits within tribes, but I understand this is changing. The Saudi slums are the radical areas of recruitment and they see the Royal Family as Corrupt and see Bin Laden as one who can overthrow the Royal Family. It's a very small minority of radicals inciting violent anarchy inside Saudi Arabia and has more to do with Class Warfare within the Kingdom than being Anti-Western. Even the Local Saudis will warn westerns to stay out of the slums. Iraq could become a Class Warfare Civil Conflict if the Oil Loot is not shared equal amongst the tribes and Sunni and Shia Sects.
