Triumph of Literalism and Lunacy: Petty Complaints About the +óGé¼+ôBorn Fighting+óGé¼-¥ Metaphor

On RaisingKaine.com and in my own personal conversations, I have been amazed to hear about the pettiness of some Democrats.  These are the ones who get sidetracked on non-issues, but who don+óGé¼Gäót object (out loud, anyway) when a candidate enables Bush to lead an illicit war, use 9-11 as an excuse to declare a unitary presidency (who can trump the other branches of government), and destroy all the progressive achievements of the 20th Century.  They+óGé¼Gäóll support any number of enablers, not because they agree with them, but because they+óGé¼Gäóre +óGé¼+ôelectable.+óGé¼-¥  And the self-fulfilling prophesy continues ad infinitum.  But they just can+óGé¼Gäót stand it when they see +óGé¼+ôBorn Fighting+óGé¼-¥ on a campaign sign.  It+óGé¼Gäós the triumph of literalism and the trivial.
What is it with some women+óGé¼Gäós going so far as to register a complaint about Webb+óGé¼Gäós signs with the +óGé¼+ôBorn fighting+óGé¼-¥ metaphor?  I+óGé¼Gäóve gotten them too!  I+óGé¼Gäóm not crazy about the slogan.  However there are varying degrees of displeasure.  I wouldn+óGé¼Gäót let it get in the way of either my understanding of where Jim Webb stands or how he+óGé¼Gäóll contribute to a better America.  Nor would I take the absurd position to withhold support.  I certainly wouldn+óGé¼Gäót get +óGé¼+ôwrapped around the axle+óGé¼-¥ by it.

Some of the complainers see themselves as morally superior.  They think people who spend their time trying to make a difference are +óGé¼+ôjust so mean.+óGé¼-¥  They erroneously think anyone who dissents or uses strong language is +óGé¼+ôtoo aggressive,+óGé¼-¥ even when strong language is more than called for.  Those who courageously stand up when we most need them get a condescending finger pointing, while real evil is perpetuated in our names.  Others call politics the +óGé¼+ôart of the possible.+óGé¼-¥  I believe it+óGé¼Gäós much more.  It+óGé¼Gäós how we demonstrate patriotism; exercise our citizenship, as we are morally required to do; get things done; and assure that things either remain the same, or change. Surely, there needs to be some passion in that.  Could these critics conjure up enough passion to write a letter to the editor about what's really wrong in our country?  Or speak out?  Do anything constructive to bring sanity back to Washisngton?

I am a feminist who+óGé¼Gäós not crazy about the slogan.  But it, along with everything else, belongs in context, post-modernist deconstruction notwithstanding.  I do agree that we should visit and revisit the words we chose, but do so without the sanctimony and shooting ourselves in the foot.

+óGé¼+ôBorn Fighting+óGé¼-¥ is the title of James Webb+óGé¼Gäós book on the Scots-Irish.  And though Webb has been a soldier, and, even a boxer in the past, he means +óGé¼+ôborn fighting+óGé¼-¥ as +óGé¼+ôfighting for the underdog, fighting for what+óGé¼Gäós right, fighting for a better America and a better way of leading it, and standing up when the going gets tough."  One example is his support of mineworkers in Southwest Virginia some years back.

Language can indeed create its own reality.  We see evidence of it every day: Slogans like +óGé¼+ôyou+óGé¼Gäóre with us or against us;+óGé¼-¥ profuse attacks on patriotic dissent in the media; or assertions that it+óGé¼Gäós +óGé¼+ôWorld War III.+óGé¼-¥  The latter is my idea of truly immoral, plunder-headed opinion-leading that needs to be confronted.  The neo-cons would bring the world down upon us for fun and profit.  Where are these same opponents of the +óGé¼+ôBorn fighting+óGé¼-¥ metaphor?  They+óGé¼Gäód quibble with a Webb sign, but not with the warmongering Newt Gingrich, Bill Bennett, or Bill O+óGé¼GäóReilly?  Another radical conservative pundit has repeatedly called for violence against liberals, including +óGé¼+ôassassination+óGé¼-¥ of some Democratic leaders.  Where is the outrage about that?

More benignly, our own Democratic Congressman refers to our +óGé¼+ôFighting 9th+óGé¼-¥ Congressional District.+óGé¼-¥  That+óGé¼Gäós OK, evidently.  But a generally more diplomacy-oriented candidate even than Boucher can+óGé¼Gäót use the metaphor?  Watch for GOPers to play upon such pumped-up concerns.  They+óGé¼Gäóve already begun trying to portray Webb as pugnacious, specifically to turn off women.  But, if anything, Webb is the candidate of peace, diplomacy, a strong defense, but war only as a last resort.  Webb will resist neo-con aggression and hegemony.  Allen never knew a war he didn+óGé¼Gäót sink his teeth into.  George Felix Allen, Jr. had a lynch noose in the Virginia governor+óGé¼Gäós office.  Recall Allen+óGé¼Gäós claim that +óGé¼+ôwe+óGé¼Gäóre going to shove their (liberals+óGé¼Gäó) teeth down their whiny throats.+óGé¼-¥  Also, read the book by Felix+óGé¼Gäós sister to see what zero competence in the peacemaking department looks like.  Then recall how James Webb opposes our widening militarism; how he+óGé¼Gäós brought healing good will to South East Asia, where he once served in war; and how even his ex-wife endorses him!!!!!!

Right now we hear a lot about +óGé¼+ôproportionality.+óGé¼-¥  We could use a little of that in our decisions about candidates.  Democrats allowed  themselves to be convinced to abandon Howard Dean because the media maliciously used an engineered video clip (which eliminated the background noise of 3,000 cheering so loud, Dean had to shout to be heard).  They believed the vicious ads by Dean+óGé¼Gäós own fellow Democratic candidates, who equated him with Osama Bin Laden.  Democrats dumped Al Gore in 2003 because the media says +óGé¼+ôhe+óGé¼Gäós too wooden.+óGé¼-¥  Then they refuse to consider him a viable candidate when he actually won the presidency. Were any of these trivialists to hear him now, they+óGé¼Gäód be impressed more than ever.  But they are not listening.  They let the media sink John Kerry with undue circulation of false charges against him.  They lost war hero, Max Cleland to the Senate because ignorant voters listened to the malignant Saxby Chambliss, who equated Max Cleland to Osama Bin Laden.  Yes words, and images out of context, or falsely fused, can create unspeakable mischief.

Lest anyone think I+óGé¼Gäóm taking just my own gender to task for trivializing, there+óGé¼Gäós more.  One of the most absurd reasons for voting against a candidate emerged when a man confronted me at the Democratic booth at the Steppin+óGé¼Gäó Out Festival in Blacksburg.  I was a just a low-level local volunteer, who had a Webb-for-Senate t-shirt on.  So the guy erroneously thought I was from the Webb campaign.  He blamed me for the fact that one of Webb+óGé¼Gäós large signs was +óGé¼+ôstill up.+óGé¼-¥  The last time I checked, there was still a campaign on, but he claimed it was a +óGé¼+ôstretch+óGé¼-¥ to still have signs up.  The sign was placed on private property with permission of the owner.  The guy was in-your-face mad that it wasn+óGé¼Gäót removed after the primary.  And for that, he was going to vote for - can you believe it - George Felix Allen, Jr., you know, the guy who is so environmentally friendly (that would be sarcasm).

BTW, I did have something to do with the small Webb signs placed only at the Blacksburg polling poling places on primary day.  And they were removed, as required, by 8 PM primary night. I know that because my husband and I personally took every one of them down.  That+óGé¼Gäós more prompt than the requirement!  Meanwhile, the man would vote against his own best interests because of a bogus sign +óGé¼+ôissue.+óGé¼-¥

Whatever their issue, women and men who celebrate the trivial are part of the reason why constructive change doesn+óGé¼Gäót happen.  We can create a new reality by changing who+óGé¼Gäós in Washington.  Support people with an agenda focused on economic fairness, sound foreign policy, and justice for all.  Pick one who doesn't buy into deceit of the populace.  That+óGé¼Gäós all it would take.

James Webb may be behind in the polls, but he+óGé¼Gäós on the move.  Previously, others with his candidate strength have moved to front-runner.  For a time, it looked like Tim Kaine wouldn+óGé¼Gäót win, but he did.  Ned Lamont is now ahead of Joe Lieberman.  James Webb will gain more momentum too.  But this race shouldn+óGé¼Gäót even be close.  There+óGé¼Gäós a candidate, Allen, who stand for everything most Virginians and most American oppose, and then there+óGé¼Gäós James Webb, who is an outstanding Democrat and candidate.  Allen+óGé¼Gäós voted 97% with the Bush agenda.  His popularity should be more in sync with Bush+óGé¼Gäós puny approval rating.  And anyone who gets mired in the petty and ridiculous, well, they are part of the problem as surely as George W. Bush and George Felix Allen, Jr., are.

Good post ! (thegools - 8/7/2006 10:45:22 PM)

Bravo Kathy! (Doug Garnett-Deakin - 8/7/2006 5:05:53 PM)
And might I just toss this into this old argument- I do wholly believe the liberal line (maybe this isn't in fashion anymore) that poverty is violence in some form, and needs to be addressed as such. When one sees violence being acted upon someone (who can say that children when denied medical care in Virginia are not being abused by our rich society?), one must stand up and fight for those at the bottom of our society. That's worth "fighting" for. That's what the slogan means to me, and I loved it for his book and for his campaign.

This rhetoric of fighting was used by those opposed to almost all warfare- Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, etc. "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize" has the lines:

But the one thing we did right,
Was the day we started to fight.

I would tell people that pacifists like Gandi were Born Fighting. Who is stronger, more a fighter, than the one who can stand straight and not strike back in a union picket line when the cops come with clubs?

Are the Dixie Chicks, who didn't back down from strong words despite costing themselves tons of money, fighters? In my mind you bet!

Sorry to ramble, but I love "Born Fighting".

Thanks (seveneasypeaces - 8/7/2006 5:24:48 PM)
That was Beautiful.

No true warrior wants to fight but they are always ready to fight.  That's what makes them warriors.

We are ready.

Good diary Kathy (Bubby - 8/7/2006 5:22:44 PM)
People that don't think this election is a "fight", aren't paying attention.

But if some folks want to sit in a circle and sing Kum-ba-yah...until we get a Congress that represents the people, and a president that obeys the law...good luck.

Great Stuff (Nick Stump - 8/7/2006 6:56:42 PM)
Kathy you've pointed out the biggest problem we Democrats have.
We have self-destructed the last few elections, and it's because we have forgotten how to fight for our place in this Democracy.  Good for you.  Keep 'em coming.  We need more common sense Democrats like you.

"If it's not worth fighting for, it's not worth having" (Lowell - 8/7/2006 7:15:01 PM)
That saying pretty much sums it all up.  Along those lines, I simply can't imagine the mindset of Democrats who would think it's not worth fighting FOR:

*a woman's right to choose
*the environment
*peace
*freedom
*liberty
*justice
*equal rights for all people
*the Constitution
*America

I also can't imagine the mindset of Democrats who would think it's not worth fighting AGAINST:

*injustice
*human rights abuses
*discrimination
*global warming
*an out-of-control President
*ignoramuses like George Allen

That's what "Born Fighting" is all about.  It's clear and it's essential.  To those who don't get it, I have nothing in particular to say to them...

Bravo! (Rick O'Dell - 8/7/2006 7:23:32 PM)
As a Democrat I'd rather be "Born Fighting" instead of "Still-Born."  Well said Kathy.

COMMENT HIDDEN (MohawkOV1D - 8/7/2006 7:33:20 PM)

Wow, how much does Felix's campaign pay for you to try to throw grenades into the NCOs' mess? (Doug Garnett-Deakin - 8/7/2006 9:00:32 PM)
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot.

Born Fighting.... (mosquitopest - 8/7/2006 8:50:21 PM)
I;ve always translated it to mean born fighting corruption and corporate sell -uts like Allen....

I think it's the ChickenHawks--Allen, Cheney (5 deferments), Rove, and Bush (AWOL during Vietnam) who have the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians women, children and men on their hands...That's the real issue that is needing to be addressed.

Why get sidetracked in the BS and avoid/deny what's really going on?

Issues people Issues....especially the "incumbant's" record....it's all there.  Please don't sweat the small stuff and get distracted....Lots of people are dying needlessly and America's treasury is being robbed....we will ba bankrupt (or worse) if the chickenhawks are allowed to continue their neocon fantasy of world domination....

Buzz Buzz....M

Also it's fun (Doug Garnett-Deakin - 8/7/2006 9:06:21 PM)
I have a friend from another state who is very liberal and was a little critical of Webb during the campaign given his history. He got one look at my bumper sticker and yelled, like Auburn's WAR EAGLE!, "BORN FIGHTIN'!!!" And he still does it whenever I call him. I love it. It's like a badge of honor. I say it loud, southern and proud.

Keep Fighting the good fight! (VA Breeze - 8/8/2006 12:05:49 AM)
Times like now when our country is in such disarray - I think we all need to get off our rears and start fighting back - not with punches but with strong words and dedication. I continue to be surpriseds by many people's total lack of knowledge of current events so we must push hard to get the word out- about great candidates like Jim Webb!

It's Okay to be Dem--way to go Kathy (bladerunner - 8/8/2006 4:07:01 PM)
yes you are right about Al Gore. People say he didn't campaign that well in 2000, and since he's loosened up and looking better. Probably cause dems are learning, including him just to be yourself and the hell with the radical right who like to try to humiliate you if you are a democrat--that's how they argue.

Short story: We went on a cruise in the late fall of 2000 just after election day, but before the supreme court gave the presidency to Bushey. I wore my Gore 2000 shirt and a bunch of old farts were literally booing me off the deck. It was unbelievable the hate coming from them.

Fast forward to last Sunday:

I decided to take my Gore 2000 shirt out of mothballs and wore it grocery shopping, of course I stuck my chest out a little farther, cause I don't think anyone was going to stick up for Bush now--I was more than ready if they did. I struck up more conversations with people then usual. I am sure a lot of people that voted for Bush, think Gore doesn't look bad now. Can you imagine how much better off we'd be if we'd had Gore the last 6 years.

Good job Kathy!
