Tim Kaine on Joe Lieberman: Do NOT Run as an Independent!

In case you missed this, Gov. Tim Kaine has weighed in on the Lieberman-Lamont primary in Connecticut (this Tuesday). According to Kaine, if Lieberman loses, he should not - repeat NOT - run as an independent ("I hope he will not run as an independent").  Kaine adds that such a run by Lieberman would be "deeply divisive" and that "[p]olitics is a team sport."

The Washington Post story notes that Kaine's comments represent "an early barometer of the pressure the three-term senator [Lieberman] may face from fellow Democrats if he loses."

Discuss amongst yourselves.

LIEberman as an Independent (Curlew - 8/6/2006 12:23:46 PM)
Perhaps after Joe is soundly trounced on Tuesday reality will sink in and he'll crawl back under his rock.  If he doesn't he will demonstrate to the Party and to Connecticut that Joe is all about Joe.  Personally I think LIEberman is going to be beaten so soundly that even a blind Joe could read the handwriting on the wall and he'll begin making plans for being a highly-paid conservative lobbyist on K street - where he belongs.

Dodd weighs in too. (bladerunner - 8/6/2006 12:33:12 PM)
Great to see Kaine weighing, but I like Senator Christopher Dodd's (D-Conn) comment in the Post too:

"It is a MISTAKE to contend, as the Republicans are doing, that the Democrats have been captured by left-wing, anti-war activists, saying the Connecticut race most of all reflects discontent with Bush rather than an ideological awakening."

Very true.

Also further on in the Post article--toward the end Borosage(GOP) indicates the Dems better be careful because the GOP have been successful in making the Dems seem weak--which in the past has been true. I think this time around things will be different--Americans will see through all the Rove fear strategy. Of course the Dems have to stand up and show we can be bad asses too. But for Gods sake don't ride in a tank!! The big problem with this issue is that most media have bought into the GOP's assertions that the Dems are weak on National Security. The media needs to be educated otherwise!!

Bob Borosage is NOT GOP (teacherken - 8/6/2006 1:58:14 PM)
try this google search to see how far off calling him GOP is

Do NOT run as an independent (Silver Fox - 8/6/2006 1:42:26 PM)
Before we prognosticate and pontificate I think it behooves us to see, if Lieberman does lose to Lamont in the primary, exactly what the margin of victory and the level of turnout is.  If Lieberman loses by a wide margin and there is a respectable turnout (the recent VA primary turnout was PATHETIC!) then we'll be better able to judge what such a loss by an incumbent Senator to a primary challenger tells us about the mood of the electorate.  I do agree with Tim Kaine that if Lieberman loses, as he is projected to do, and if he retains any loyalty to the Democratic party he should drop his plan to run as an Independent.  That could cost us a seat in the Senate by splitting the Democratic amd Independent vote.  But maybe Lieberman equates "Independent" as cutting himself loose from party ties.  We'll know more after Tuesday night.

Borosage status.. (bladerunner - 8/6/2006 4:42:36 PM)
Thanks teacherken, I stand corrected. My main point was that the dems don't have to be pegged as weak on defense. Thanks for your clarification.

Kaine is a big supporter of Joe (demo925 - 8/6/2006 9:08:06 PM)
I like seeing TK standing up for Joe.  Kaine, who is a self described conservative Dem, is very similar to Lieberman.  Lets go Joe!

Huh? (pitin - 8/7/2006 4:14:27 AM)
what are you talking about.  Kaine is not standing up for Joe at all, he is telling him to respect the Democratic voters of CT and not run as an Independant if he looses.

Pitin is right...... (bladerunner - 8/7/2006 9:08:47 AM)
Kaine was talking about WHEN Lieberman loses for supporting Bush's Fashist international policies. It's great to be bi partisian, but not when your supporting a facist leader like Bush....
