Did you know Helen Keller was a really progressive lefty? She realized she could not have succeeded without her family's wealth, and was horrified at the conditions under which the poor of the time lived. (Take note George Allen -- and those of you who work for him, Grover Norquist, George Bush, Anne Coulter, etc., and all you other wealthy SOBs)
Did you know that Woodrow Wilson was incredibly racist (re-segregating the federal government), anti-immigrant, pro-police state/anti-dissent? That he was a colonialist of the worst sort, invading Latin America many times? That it was more likely Wilson, and not his AG Palmer, that was behind the great erosion of civil liberties during that time? His name should be taken off the Woodrow Wilson bridge. Here's my nomination for the new bridge's new name -- the Nelson Rockefeller Bridge. Yeah, I know, Attica, etc., but did you know he was one of the main money supporters of the civil rights movement? MLK's lawyer gave an interview and talked about how they went to the Chase Manhattan Bank and Rockefeller went into the vault and came out with stacks of money for King.
Welcome to the new contributor.
David was the banker
Laurence was the environmentalist
John D III was head of the Rockefellar Foundation, gave much of the money to Lincoln Center, and fathered current US Senator Jay (John D IV).
Winthrop was a cattle rancher, and became governor of Arkansas.
Nelson did many things, including serving as under SecState before becoming Gov of NY in election of 1958, defeating incumbent Averill Harriman in what was known as the Millionaires' race.
The writer states “In Vanity Fair just now, King's old lawyer recounts how Nelson Rockefeller personally went bail for King and the others, and for a lot of money. Would such a Republican exist these days.†I recall from the story that MLK’s lawyer did say they went back many times to Rocky.
There was a liberal branch of the GOP in my youth. Here’s an interesting quote, from a review of one of Taylor Branch’s epic books on King, which jibes with my understanding of the roles of some of the major players. “Often, the Kennedys seemed to those in the movement to be actively working for the other side. John Kennedy repeatedly appointed segregationist judges to the federal bench in the South, and the civil rights case that Robert Kennedy most vigorously prosecuted involved charges brought against Albany, Georgia, activists for violating the rights of a white storeowner . . . King and others in the movement found themselves turning to judges appointed by Eisenhower for justice and to liberal Republicans (remember them?) like Nelson Rockefeller for aid.†http://www.religion-... Remember that Bobby Kennedy authorized the bugging of MLK.
There’s a huge internet trove on Rockefeller and the civil rights movement. Here are just a few I came across: http://www.stanford.... [Jackie Robinson worked with him on racial matters]
http://www.wiley.com... [Charles Evers considered him an ally]
“Conversely, we had Republicans like Nelson Rockefeller giving active support to Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, acting as lineal descendants of the pro-business, pro-civil rights Northern Republicans of the immediate post-Civil-War era.â€
Rockefeller also was pro-choice, at a time when this was daring, and he vetoed an attempted repeal of New York’s early pro-choice law. http://www.prospect....

In a lot of states it was morally better to be a Republican than a Democrat. Harry Byrd Sr. (like Wilson) was a Virginia Democrat and a complete racist.
If so, you might want to ask Jim Webb his opinion.
So let's see, on one side we have someone who was a civil rights pioneer (his was not a popular position at the time) and a pioneer in promoting reproductive freedom (also unpopular at the time), and on the bad side of the ledger, uh
sheesh
