Viola Baskerville: Slow and Steady Wins the Race?

Two members of RaisingKaine.com spoke with  Viola Baskerville, candidate for Lt. Governor of Virginia, last night at the Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner in Richmond, and discovered a personable, energetic, charismatic woman who believes that:

  • "slow and steady wins the race" -- Baskerville pointed to the turtle pin she was wearing as symbolic of this, as she all but acknowledged that she was trailing in the race for Virginia Lt. Governor (we presume that Chap Peterson is the "hare" in this extended metaphor?)
  • if she wins the nomination, she will add racial and gender diversity to the ticket, which otherwise could end up being "just three white males" -- the implication being that this would not be a good thing (we at RaisingKaine found that comment a bit jarring; imagine if a white man had said he didn't want a ticket with 3 African American women on it?)
  • she brings ideological balance to the ticket, given that Kaine is significantly more conservative than she is (in other words., she's running as an unabashed liberal -- is that a good thing in the "red state" of Virginia?)
  • based on her family background in Richmond ("born and raised"), Mecklenburg (her husband), and other parts of the state, she is qualified to "build bridges" between rural and urban areas
  • the race is going to be "nasty"

Our conclusion on Baskerville: nice, smart lady, but running as a liberal who will prevent the ticket from being "just 3 white men" probably isn't going to cut it in a "nasty" race in Virginia this year.
