George Felix Allen stood in Senate and proudly introduced SJRes 31, a proposal to amend the US Constitution to require Congress to balance the budget of the US. He spoke at length about the importance of reducing the national debt, alleviating taxes, etc, etc, blah blah blah

March 16, 2006

George Felix Allen voted YES to HJRes 47, a joint resolution RAISING the national debt limit to $8.97 trillion.

Why the flip flop, Felix?

Maybe he knew all along that the Constitutional Amendment would take years to be ratified (as he says, the Senate moves at the pace of a wounded sea slug-- but getting a Constitutional amendment requires a whole lot more time than that). Since Allen's amendment couldn't very well be ratified before his bid for President in 2006-8, it wouldn't cause him any pain, and he could always point to it and make noises about trying to solve the debt problem.
