Jim Webb Needs Money!

OK, here's the deal. We've nominated a great candidate for U.S. Senate in Jim Webb.  On paper at least, Webb's extremely formidable as an opponent to George Felix Allen.  In addition, Allen is not particularly popular, and is facing a strong headwind of discontent among the American people over Iraq, the budget deficit, Washington corruption, the Katrina fiasco, Republican stalemate on immigration reform, $3+ per gallon gasoline, etc., etc.  In other words, Allen is beatable and Webb can beat him.

HOWEVER....

Jim Webb WILL NOT WIN without the financial resources necessary to wage a serious air and ground war against Allen.  Right now, however, here's the situation:

Allen's re-election campaign, headquartered in a glass-walled high-rise building that overlooks the Beltway in Arlington, had $6.62 million in the bank on June 30.

Webb's campaign, with offices in an ancient building in downtown Arlington that staff members said was being demolished next year, had $424,245.

This is not acceptable.  It is time for Democrats to get serious here.  We've got to make up this funding gap, and we've got to do it right away.

Let's not be subtle about this.  Jim Webb needs money.  Now.  Here are two things for you to do, TODAY if at all possible.

1) Vote for Jim Webb in Barbara Boxer's PAC for a Change contest, and help him win a fundraising letter from Sen. Boxer that could be worth tens of thousands of dollars to the Webb campaign.

2) Donate $25, $50, $100, whatever you can to the Webb campaign by clicking here.

That's it, that's my message for the day.  Thank you for your support.

We really need to get rolling... (va.walter - 7/17/2006 9:27:53 AM)
on the fundraising.  Now is the time when the media and national folks will decide if this is a race to follow/support or not.  Talk like this from our buddy Mr. Sabato is the kind of talk we need to stop.

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, called Webb’s fundraising “pitiful,” adding that if national Democrats and party activists in the internet blogosphere don’t pour large sums into his campaign quickly, “this race is going to be over.”

Sabato suggested that Webb’s money shortage is especially critical because the Democrat is still largely unknown to most voters. Webb needs to invest millions of dollars in television advertising, particularly in the increasingly Democratic Northern Virginia suburbs where he must do well to have a chance against Allen, Sabato said.

“They’re hoping the free media” – broadcast and newspaper news coverage – “can carry them,” Sabato said of the Webb forces. “The free media is important but it’s a supplement. …

“Maybe at this rate, they can have TV ads with stick figures,” he added.

Millions on TV advertising? (hrconservative - 7/17/2006 10:08:30 AM)
I don't see millions of dollars floating in from anywhere for Webb. Perhaps you can buy him a camcorder and post the commercial on Youtube. That might work. . .

Here is what the extreme right wing and Allen supporting NewsMax has to say about Allen's "huge money advantage over Jim Webb:"

Sen. George Allen Has Huge Cash Advantage

Federal campaign reports show incumbent Republican Senator George Allen has a huge money advantage over Jim Webb, his Democratic challenger in this year's race.

From April through June, Allen's campaign took in $1.8 million dollars and had $6.6 million dollars on hand to start July.

Webb started the month with more than $424,000 on hand, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Because he faced a primary election June 13, Webb's latest report reflects only fundraising from May 25 through June 30. During that period he raised about $587,000 dollars.

The former governor remains the early favorite, even though he faces a determined former Republican in Webb. He is a decorated Vietnam veteran and served as President Reagan's Navy secretary.

Allen is seeking a second term even as he plots a possible presidential run in 2008.

Allen trails behind though (phriendlyjaime - 7/17/2006 12:22:04 PM)
when you look at other candidates who are looking at a Pres run in addition to their senate run.  And Allen actually has a fight on his hands.  Hillary Clinton has over $22 millions right now, and she leads by 30 points.  Allen has 6.6 million, and leads anywhere from 5-10 points.

I think this actually looks terrible for Felix.

Ummmm, yeah. (I.Publius - 7/17/2006 12:32:36 PM)
Having 10 times your opponent's assets is a bad thing.  Keep spinning, honey.

Never said it was bad. (phriendlyjaime - 7/17/2006 1:18:48 PM)
Just making the point that Allen is behind compared to others in the same boat as he is.

Ok, you're right. (I.Publius - 7/17/2006 1:41:32 PM)
You didn't say it was bad.  You said it was "terrible."

My mistake.

I don't get it. (phriendlyjaime - 7/17/2006 3:19:03 PM)
Why the nit picking?  Are you trying to miss the point?  Because you are dancing around my point.

Why can't you just have a discussion here?  Why must you attack and call names and berate people?  It just doesn't make any sense.

sure it does -- that's the way his kind think (teacherken - 7/17/2006 3:51:27 PM)
haven't you seen the consistent pattern in remarks here previouslY/

why bother to engage?  he's not interested in a conversation, only in scoring what he thinks are debating points.

Here's a chance to participate where large groups are gathered.  Grab some friends and head out to show off your candidate.  Numbers talk so gather a force.  And thanks to Todd for putting this together.
