Wolf hasn+óGé¼Gäót had a serious challenger like this in a long time. He now faces a former senior official from the Clinton Administration who served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at Health and Human Services. Feder is currently the Dean of the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. Since her decision to run for Congress, she has been out-fundraising Wolf all year long. Feder is not just a great Democratic candidate, she is someone we desperately NEED in Congress, because of her expertise on health care.
Before Judy took the stage, Congressman Jim Moran spoke to the assembled crowd and read a laundry list of extreme right positions taken by Frank Wolf in recent years. Moran noted that Frank Wolf appears moderate when he campaigns, but that his votes tell a very different story. From the flag burning amendment, to fighting a woman+óGé¼Gäós right to choose, to supporting Bush+óGé¼Gäós attempts to pry into all aspects of our personal lives, Wolf has left his district behind and has instead courted a far-right-wing agenda that is taking our country on the fast lane to nowhere.
Some might think, "Frank Wolf has been re-elected year after year, how could he be in danger?" Well, according to polls done in the 10th District, 58% disapprove of President Bush+óGé¼Gäós job performance and 68% think the country is going in the wrong direction. Kaine won this district by 4 points in 2005, and the district came out big for Jim Webb in the Democratic primary this June.
Beyond all the politics, Judy has a cadre of young staff, and is one of the warmest people you+óGé¼Gäóll ever meet. She has proven to be a fiery speaker. (She was bursting with emotion on stage tonight.) Meanwhile, polls show Wolf is not well-liked by his ever-changing constituency. As more people have moved into the district, it is starting to trend Democratic (as evidenced by Mark Herring+óGé¼Gäós victory in the January 2006 special election). I say we do what we can to support Judy, whether we volunteer, give money, or simply share her message. I know I will.
With the explosive population growth of Loudoun County in the past ten years there are many more young families with children and, being a DC exurb, commuters are especially affected by rising gas prices. This is accelerating the pace of Loudoun County turning bluer every year.
Poisson, Herring, and Kaine have demonstrated that we are ready to try a new path. With Judy Feder and Jim Webb we have amazing candidates that are vastly superior to the republican rubber stamp incumbents.
It is time for a change.
