If Jesus walked the earth today and did his thing again like he did in 32AD....

What would become of Him?

Jesus was subversive (at least according to the powers of the time), and the powers-that-be (Rome, the church/Pharisees) crucified him for it.  They had the most to lose if this  preaching rabbi didn+óGé¼Gäót stop his movement.  (People don't give up power & wealth easily.)

Now what would happen today if Jesus, a drifter, who depended on charity, who was really charismatic, who showed people the error of their ways, who ransacked churches, whose teachings were revolutionary, and who sought to bring about an upheaval in government, society, and organized religion?

What would organized religions and governments do?
Is there any question?

I have long thought that HE would end up the same way he did in the 1st century...  or in prison- Gitmo perhaps.

What do you think?

What does this say about how we accept (or don't accept) progressive thinkers, ideas, maveriks?

Maybe this is the wrong forum for a real debate on this question. (thegools - 7/13/2006 11:31:36 PM)
I put this idea out there after a recent thread that went off track by people discussing Jesus and christianity etc. It made me start to think about things.

If we ignore the "fire and brimstone apocalypse second coming" stuff from the bible, and we just imagine a second-coming with Jesus arriving back on earth with little fanfare (kind-of like he did the first time around)....what would he be?

My guess is that he would appear as a person that most people treat with disdain.  I firmly believe that most of us Christians would be so blind to our prejudices that we would fail to recognize Him.  Mary Magdelan failed to recognize Him once, and she knew him.  Why should we recognize Him, when he returns as an junky-AIDS victim, or a street person with serious B.O., or a welfare mother with 20 kids from 20 fathers, who refuses to get a steady job, and has a hard time providing/or getting enough nourishment?

....the first time around, Jesus gave up his steady job and went on the 1st century, Judean equivalent of social welfare, living as a pauper, even at times starving.
