Allen Praises Guantanamo?
From Hotline:
Sen. George Allen (R-VA) "visited the U.S.-run prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba yesterday and reported favorably afterward on the U.S. operations there." He "praised 'an outstanding job protecting Americans' by the active-duty, reserve and National Guard troops, the FBI, the interrogation experts and medical staff at the prison." Allen "called Guantanamo a transparent detention center where the interrogators go beyond Geneva Convention requirements, and he said detainees are treated very well." Allen: "Detainee operations in Guantanamo Bay should continue for our security" (Hardin, Richmond Times-Dispatch, 7/11).
Why, Allen? Why provide your opponent with another chance to nationalize this fight? I don't get it.
