The Frederickbsburg Free Lance-Star has published an LTE (Letter to the Editor) from our own Teddy Goodson. Great job, Teddy! Now, we need a few hundred (thousand?) Webb supporters writing letters to newspapers, calling radio and TV stations over the next 4 months. Let's tell the world - not just those few who read poltiical blogs - what we think about Jim Webb...and GeorgeBushAllen as well. Thanks.

I could not agree more. (AlleyKat - 7/7/2006 8:16:17 AM)
Yesterday the the Richmond Times Dispatch ran two negative letters to the editor ablut Webb. TOday the ran another. It is time to flood that paper with letters supporting Webb.
Allen,

You mean the Rightwing Times-Dispatch? (Lowell - 7/7/2006 8:21:44 AM)
That paper might as well rename itself, because it's totally bought and paid for by right-wing Republicans. At least, they should put a disclaimer saying that they are 100% right-wing Republican, 100% of the time. How is the RTD any different than the Washington Moonie Times or Faux News? Got me.
Go For It! (Teddy - 7/7/2006 8:32:10 AM)
We on RaisingKaine need a list of URL and snail mail addresses of various media, and telephone numbers of television, cable, and radio news rooms so we can let these bozos know how we think and feel. And we need a notification system to alert us when a news item, or another letter to the editor, or another op ed commentary pops up that deserves a reply. Here is the URL where I sent my LTE to the Fredericksburg Lance-Star (called Fredericksburg.com online):

Wonderful letter! (phriendlyjaime - 7/7/2006 8:42:36 AM)
And here is an easy link to use to send out tons of LTEs at one time...

but do not send the same letter to multiple outlets (teacherken - 7/7/2006 6:02:15 PM)
if they find out you have done that, you will never get published again.
The LTEs I have had published, and short pieces in the Post, they always check to make sure that it is exclusive to them, not published or submitted elsewhere. In the old Journal newspapers things were a bit different. After they had once published one of my ope eds, thereafter they would print anything I sent them on education w/o checking back, so long as it came from the same email address
btw -- you will have far better luck writing for smaller papers, even some of the free weeklies. They are usually looking for material to fill their pages.
getting into metro dailies is more difficult. it is an art, and they are unlikely to publish you more than once every 4-8 weeks, because they have so many submissions.
For LTEs, short and to the point is best. At most 300 words, usually far better if you keep it shorter. Cehck the policy of the paper.
But you can also submit op ed pieces, particularly if you hae "standing" as I did on educational issues.
Good luck, and good writing.
Terrific letter, Teddy! (summercat - 7/8/2006 7:10:24 AM)
And I couldn't agree more that we need to flood the papers with letters supporting Webb and the other Dem candidates!
Great letter! (summercat - 7/8/2006 7:13:02 AM)
And there was another pro-Webb one at the top of the page.
Thanks for posting!
There can be other serendipitous benefits to writing LTE's... (Loudoun County Dem - 7/7/2006 12:30:03 PM)
I recently recieved a phone call from a high school friend whom I hadn't talked with in 25 years. He looked me up after seeing an LTE that I had written about Frank Wolf using franking for what is essentially campaign material.
It was great catching up on each others lives and we hope to get together soon to meet each others families.
Sometimes karma works...
Teddy Goodson's Home Run LTE (Tony Mastalski - 7/7/2006 1:59:26 PM)
First of all the letter Teddy wrote was extremely well done. Very insightful!
Second I live in Fredericksburg and while the paper is family owned and tends to be conservative, Jim Webb's press coverage on balence has been very good there. I think the Freelance Star (FLS) likes viewing itself as an independent source. I also plays to it's audience (former military / USMC / FBI - Quantico)government workers.
Third whether Teddy knew it or not ... the theme of government intrusion (the nanny state)plays extremely well in Fredneck land.
So thanks for the fine letter ... and note to Bloggers ... START submitting more of your work as LTEs!!!
Thanks Teddy
