At the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Richmond last night, Congressman Jim Moran spoke of Mark Warner and also of what makes us Democrats. I n a hard hitting, emotional speech, Moran pounded home several main points:
Mark Warner "rescued this state from a right-wing ideological disaster."
Virginia's previous governor, Republican "No Car Tax" Jim Gilmore, was "worse than imcompetent" in that he launched a deliberate attempt to force Virginia to renege on its commitments to education, healthcare, and the needy.
Mark Warner took over this mess but did not "make excuses" or "whine" -- "he acted."
"What Mark Warner has done for our state is exactly what the Democratic Party needs to do for our country." (hint hint)
In contrast, President Bush is assaulting Social Security while turning the huge surplus he inherited from President Clinton into a massive deficit.
We Democrats rescued the world from Nazism, Fascism and Communism in the past century, largely based on our commitment to the ideals and values of Democracy
"Farmers, factory workers, the middle class and the underclass -- they are the Democratic Party and they look to us for leadership."
