Damn Republicans Soft on Terror

According to the Wasington Post, Republicans are trying to spin the SCOTUS decision on Guantanamo into a campaign against being "soft on terrorism".

"House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) criticized House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's comment Thursday that the court decision 'affirms the American ideal that all are entitled to the basic guarantees of our justice system." That statement, Boehner said, amounted to Pelosi's advocating "special privileges for terrorists.'"

When will someone finally step up to return fire on these idiots? Effective justice cuts two ways. Our security depends upon finding the real perpetrators of terror, and bringing them to justice. Justice doesn't mean just dropping a bomb on suspects, either. Justice means providing clear evidence of wrongdoing for all the world to see, and then reaching a fair judgement and conviction for the crime.

I want to see an effective trial mounted for each of these suspects imprisoned at Guantanamo.  Unfortunately, the circumstances do not provide for a very effective trial- lack of evidence, no clear accusations, or accusations that change, improper procedure, etc. If in fact these men are "darn dangerous" as President Bush claims, why is justice being withheld- is it only to cover up the administration's shoddy work? If these men are terrorists, they should be prosecuted without delay. Meanwhile, other known terrorists (Bin Laden, for example)remain on the loose mocking us with impunity.

I get the uneasy feeling that our leaders in the Bush administration prefer to mislead the American people than to make the tough choices that go along with doing the right thing. It makes me madder than hell, and I don't want to take it anymore.

We don't need no stinkin' due process! (Kindler - 7/1/2006 9:24:15 PM)
Yeah, but you've got to admit that Pelosi made a pretty radical, left-wing statement when she affirmed "the American ideal that all are entitled to the basic guarantees of our justice system."

It's this kind of namby-pamby, wussy thinking that prevented the Roman Republic from becoming an Empire all those years. We need to get King George II coronated before it's too late!

has recommended the use of an international tribunal.  This would certainly make the processes more fair and accurate, while helping the US seem less like the fascists they appear to much of the world to have been thus far, imo.
