I'm off to commute home and vote, and most other RKers are out in the field. Keep the updates coming!

Polls close at 7 p.m. (GO VOTE!), after which you can follow the election results here.

p.s. NLS calls it for Webb ... we'll see.

UPDATE: Webb up 53% to 47% with almost 84% of the precincts reporting (as of 8:23 p.m.)

UPDATE: Same numbers - with almost 93% of the precincts reporting (as of 8:51 p.m.)

Election Party Night Party (Corey - 6/13/2006 5:36:53 PM)
Do not forget to join the Webb campaign at their after party at the Hilton in Crystal City starting at 7:00 pm.

and no I didn't jinx it.

What time... (Arlington Mike - 6/13/2006 5:39:11 PM)
At what point can we realistically expect results to come in, and what's the best way to track for them?  Since there won't be night-long TV coverage on this one, is the only real source of voting results the SBE site?

Re: What Time.. (rjl - 6/13/2006 5:45:23 PM)
It looks to be 8-8:30. Go Harris Miller!

Prankster (rjl - 6/13/2006 6:01:48 PM)

Shenandoah Valley Update (ilsethedog - 6/13/2006 5:51:04 PM)
Just finished voting here in New Market VA.  I'm sure youall know, the Valley is most red. Ours is a very small precinct, however, the election clerk advised me they had 51 votes total at 5:30pm. For this town and for a Democratic primary, that's really pretty good. Since we're also heavily ex-military here that number may bode well for Jim Webb.

FYI, first election with the Diebold touch screen voting terminals here.  *kinda sent chills up my spine*

Agreed (Arlington Mike - 6/13/2006 6:04:58 PM)
You'd better believe I checked my vote about 4 times to make sure it was right.  I'm entirely unconvinced that those machines are legit.  I feel like a paranoid old man (no offense to any RK readers!) complaining about the newfangled technology these days!

Diebold hee-bee jee-bees (ilsethedog - 6/13/2006 6:35:39 PM)
ArlMike, I don't think anyone here would take exception with our Diebold concerns.

In case you've not seen the article that makes the case that the GOP "stole two in a row"...

Less than an hour... (Laura86 - 6/13/2006 6:05:22 PM)
I'm feelin' good!  I've got the SBE website ready to go and refresh.

nice job on the site (ilsethedog - 6/13/2006 7:30:02 PM)
not too cold, not too hot, just right!

High Turnout in Arlington (Greg - 6/13/2006 6:30:37 PM)
I just voted at Wilson precinct in Arlington, which is basically the south end of Rosslyn, and I was # 156 in the Democratic primary as of 6:15.

There were three people behind me in line -- which is probably indicative of the after-work crowd showing up.

any indication how they were voting? nt (Josh - 6/13/2006 6:35:54 PM)

I'm guessing breaking for Webb like the rest of Arlington... (Greg - 6/13/2006 6:57:26 PM)
I was in and out in about 2 minutes, but I did pass someone wearing a Webb sticker on the way out...

Mostly Miller people here (ESB - 6/13/2006 6:39:36 PM)
in Richmond when I went to vote, but turnout seems to be low which is a good sign since this is supposed to be one of his strongholds.

Only a few minutes left!

Results coming in. (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 7:02:46 PM)
Results now up at http://sbe.virginiainteractive.org/index.htm

What counties report first?

If it's NOVA or Hampton, then JIM IS GOING TO WIN !!!!

Surprised... (Arlington Mike - 6/13/2006 7:22:57 PM)
Am a bit surprised thus far by some of the results... keeping the faith...

same here (JennyE - 6/13/2006 7:27:13 PM)
Especially downsate. Keeping fingers crossed.

Webb is winning (ESB - 6/13/2006 7:43:47 PM)
by a landslide in NOVA. is now 52 % for Webb and 47% Miller with about 67% reporting.

Has anyone called it? (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 7:44:20 PM)
Southsider says Fairfax landslide will put Webb over

And Arlington (Greg - 6/13/2006 7:48:19 PM)
... is breaking 68-31 for Webb...

Here's the meme of the day folks: In the places where broadband penetration is high and people get their news from the Internet, and not just TV, Webb dominated...

True enough.. (Kathy Gerber - 6/13/2006 8:27:45 PM)
The racial division is very painful. I hope we can find ways to have honest dialog about what took place and how we can move to authentic inclusion.  And I don't mean as Democrats only, but as people.

Agreed on all counts. (Lowell - 6/14/2006 6:23:21 AM)
And it was great seeing Don McEachin on stage with Jim Webb last night.  As Senator, McEaching and the rest of us know that Jim Webb will be a great friend of all people, including African Americans.  We've just got to get that message across, because it's true.

Fairfax looking good.... (relawson - 6/13/2006 7:55:39 PM)
I'm not even from VA and I am on pins and needles.

Cumberland County (Mark - 6/13/2006 7:47:22 PM)
Three out of five precincts for Webb.....

Miller wins county overall, 79-65, for a turnout of just under 2%. Very close here, which I wouldn't have expected. Poor turnout, I can't understand why people don't vote.

Please Disregard above, numbers tranposed n/t (Mark - 6/13/2006 7:48:36 PM)

Cumberland County (Mark - 6/13/2006 7:47:50 PM)
Three out of five precincts for Webb.....

Miller wins county overall, 75-69, for a turnout of just under 2%. Very close here, which I wouldn't have expected. Poor turnout, I can't understand why people don't vote.

Looking Good (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 7:51:34 PM)
72.45% precincts in.
52.28 for Webb

Webb kicking major arse in Loudoun County!!! (Loudoun County Dem - 6/13/2006 7:58:59 PM)
2 to 1 Webb!!!

All the DIEBOLD ballots counted? (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:00:07 PM)
Don't want any last minute surprises ;-)

This is it!!!! (Laura86 - 6/13/2006 8:00:59 PM)
I'm holding my breath.....and feeling good!

Victory? (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:02:24 PM)
79.86 in
Webb 53%

I think we won!

Nick Stump's Take (Nick Stump - 6/13/2006 8:04:37 PM)
Looks to me like Miller's negative campaigning has backfired.  Instead of exciting voters--they stay home.  Then the guy with the true believers win. I'm not sure which districts are in, but looking at the numbers--I'm think you guys are gonna send a damn fine Marine to Washington this fall.

Nick

Im calling it for Webb. (ESB - 6/13/2006 8:04:43 PM)
I think its a pretty safe prediction now.

I'm calling it for MILLER!!! (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:06:48 PM)
He wins the outsourcer of the year award.

Had you going ;-)

Virtual HUG! (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:09:37 PM)
What did you learn from this?  I learned every one needs to get involved with their local precinct on the ground.

I also learned we can make a difference.

Totally agree! (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:11:16 PM)
Harris Miller learned a few lessons also.  He can play dirty as a lobbyist - doesn't always work in politics.

uh (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:15:10 PM)
it almost worked.  seriously.  that's a fairly close finish and considering what we know about Miller, I'm not going to say it didn't work, more we worked, the blogs are having more impact and the technology allows us to get up more resources and credible sited information.

Still, good god, tough and now we have to do the same to Allen (or Miller phase II).

What I have learned... (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:22:24 PM)
Although this is a clear victory for Webb and Miller should have been down into the 30% range, the fact that 47% of Democratic voters backed the Outsourcing King (God I hope he isn't offended by that) tells me that we have allot of work ahead of us fighting evil Harris Miller clones.

If the worst of them got 47% imagine what the ones who are more sneaky can do.

I agree (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:24:20 PM)
and it's also clear that boots on the ground needs ALOT of work.  The entire netroots world was working on this, yet so many voters don't know how to surf, participate, just read flyers, watch TV and listen to their church community and so on.

What's this called, "on the job training".

I'm going to read a few books.  I don't like on the job training.  :)

I think our future in IT labor activism should be focused on two things (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:27:43 PM)
Research and backing "friendlies".  Hopefully some of these activists can guide us in starting a PAC.  Even though the PG non profit status allows political activism, we took heat on that because others didn't know.  I think a PAC is more accepted these days.

talk off line (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:35:14 PM)
Yeah, nobody seems to know what kind of organization to form...but we've got to do something I agree.

Definately. This can continue (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:39:35 PM)
Let's just allow ourselves to enjoy this victory!!!  We can continue the fight against outsourcing another day.

Today, a champion of labor is one step closer to becoming a Senator.

Don't forget Miller's ad blitz (JennyE - 6/13/2006 8:43:19 PM)
And Miller played the race card and got huge numbers in Richmond. Webb has work to do to repair the damage Miller did to him in the African-American community.

Brigdes have to be healed.

Thanks, JennyE n/t (Kathy Gerber - 6/13/2006 8:57:10 PM)

Almost over. (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:09:48 PM)
Webb holding at 53% with about 15% to go.

speeches (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:11:00 PM)
Can anyone capture the speeches and post them?

While I want to hear Webb, I also want to watch Miller concede.

I must say... (Laura86 - 6/13/2006 8:14:08 PM)
The voter apathy is absolutely disgusting me.  Us hardcore few who pay attention to the blogs make up a tiny percent of the population, and only a tiny percent showed up to the polls!  As Gov. Kaine said on the stump last year, would you let someone else pick your boyfriend or girlfriend?  Hell no!  Meh.

Anyway....GOOOO WEBB!!!!!!!!!!!!

87% reporting (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:14:20 PM)
Webb at 53%

It is over!

Im glad the primary is over! (ESB - 6/13/2006 8:15:40 PM)
Now we have ourselves a general election to win!

BLOGGERS MADE A DIFFERENCE!!! (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:15:51 PM)
I think it is clear that bloggers had an impact on this campaign.  Webb was outspent by far.  This just goes to show how YOUR hard work paid off!!!

thank you! (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:18:04 PM)
Sweeping National Revolution.

You Guys Did Great (Nick Stump - 6/13/2006 8:19:42 PM)
We tried to run Andrew Horne, Fighting Dem here in Louisville and got slapped down by a wealthy opponent who had better "liberal" creds.  It was a very similar race to Webb/Miller.  We ran a pretty hard grassroots campaign, but couldn't get through the old line Dems in Louisville.  I'm very proud of all the real Democrats who came out and worked so hard for Jim Webb.  This election will be in the history books as the first great grassroots win in the 21st Century.  Congrads to all of you for standing up to help the Democratic Party.  I'm damn proud of you.  I've had a lot of fun following your work.  You guys are great!

Nick Stump

The AP Declares Jim Webb the Winner!! (GAida - 6/13/2006 8:20:35 PM)
Excellent!

Overwhelmingly Webb at Blacksburg Library Precinct A2 (KathyinBlacksburg - 6/13/2006 8:21:02 PM)
Blowout for Webb: 137 for Webb to 27 for Miller.

That's amazing! (Kathy Gerber - 6/13/2006 8:35:19 PM)
Great work KiB :):):)

A LOT MORE WORK TO DO! (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:24:01 PM)
Congrats to Harris on a tough campaign! The Miller staff ran a hard campaign.  The Allen campaign is no slouch either.  Mr. Miller was a good fight for the Webb team and it went the  distance.

True (thegools - 6/13/2006 8:30:36 PM)
... but I could have done without his mud, spin, and untruths.

Let's see if Miller bows out gracefully.  He would do a lot for Virginia if he did.

I don't want to sound corny BUT... (Laura86 - 6/13/2006 8:27:15 PM)
NOW it is time for us Democrats to come TOGETHER to defeat Allen!!!  We need to put aside our differences, and put together our resources of volunteers, time and money.  Now's not a time to hold grudges.  Senator Webb...I can hear it now!

Montgomery County Awesome (KathyinBlacksburg - 6/13/2006 8:28:20 PM)
Montgomery County (100% reporting) -- 74.88 for Webb to 25.12 for Miller

Great for Blacksburg (Nick Stump - 6/13/2006 8:30:52 PM)
I used to play at the South Main Cafe in Blacksburg.  Great town.  Glad to see Webb doing good there.

Montgomery County (KathyinBlacksburg - 6/13/2006 8:29:18 PM)
That's 74.88 % (Webb) vs. 25.12% (Miller).

Watching closely from a continent away... (BroadViewBroad - 6/13/2006 8:39:09 PM)
...and eagerly reporting on the returns as they come through.

What a grand job you RK folks have done. Kudos, Lowell et. al.

Cheers from Ellen in Santa Barbara!

Thanks Ellen. I'm exhausted but happy... (Lowell - 6/14/2006 6:20:11 AM)
Now, we have to beat George Allen, and we've got the perfect candidate to do it.  So, let's do it!! :)

Less complictions for AFL-CIO (Gene E. Magruder - 6/13/2006 8:40:30 PM)
A webb victory means a few less complications for us in labor and also means we might just get involved in the fall dogfight. Senator Webb - King of insourcing, sounds more like Democratic language that I'm used to

Or...dare I say...the "Savior of Jobs" (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:43:44 PM)
hehe.  Bush snicker in order.

Allen (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/13/2006 8:44:25 PM)
As far as I know Allen's labor/economics/trade record is the same as Millers.

Good Victory For Labor (Nick Stump - 6/13/2006 8:49:42 PM)
I'm glad for all union members. We need friends in Washington.

Fairfax won it! (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 8:51:00 PM)
Fairfax landslide still coming in: Webb 62% and 80% reporting in FFX County.

Statistically IMPOSSIBLE for a Miller Win (relawson - 6/13/2006 8:51:13 PM)
Not even DIEBOLD can change this one.
