JJ Dinner Summary

The Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner fundraiser held by the Democratic Party of Virginia last Saturday (Feb. 5), provided quite a few interesting points about what we need to do to make 2005 a winning year for Democrats. They are:
- Capitalize on the fact that the Governor's race is a marquee race in the nation. The nation will be watching us, and we need to feed on their support and dollars.
- We need to work together after the primaries and run as a close-knit ticket, just as we did in 2001. Tim Kaine will have coattails, and they can be used to elect Democrats to the Lt. Governor's and Attorney General's offices, as well as down-ballot candidates like Greg Werkheiser. Kaine will have more money than other Democratic candidates, and he needs to use some of it on their behalf. Pooled resources let unknown candidates be competitive.
- We will have divisive primaries for the Lt. Governor and Attorney General nomination. We have to heal quickly after them and get behind our nominees.
- The American public knows what the Republicans claim to stand for, even if they rarely follow through on their promises. We cannot let the Republicans define us!
- We cannot and will not concede the religious voters to Kilgore and Company. Tim Kaine is a religious man, and he can reach out to them. This is important, not just for this election, but the long term.
- There is an incredible amount of energy out there among the Democrats. We must harness this energy, and get people out of their living rooms and out into the streets, knocking on doors, talking to their neighbors about Kaine, wearing lapel stickers, etc.
- Even as the rest of the nation finds itself in a less than perfectly peachy economy, Virginia's economy is doing well, thanks largely to Mark Warner. We have the second highest economic growth among the states, second only to Nevada. And, as Warner said, "Tim has promised me he's not going to make gambling and prostitution legal!"
So those are my main points. Use the blog to add your favorite ones.
