Harris Miller Tries to Buy the Election

I agree 100% with the following from Ben Tribbett:

When comprehensive campaign finance reform was passed in 2002, one key aspect of it was the "millionaires amendment".  It allows candidates to raise more money from individuals if their opponent is spending their own money.  It is designed to keep the playing field fair.

Harris Miller defied that amendment today, by waiting until the Friday before the election to announce he would be spending large sums of his own money.  That means the Webb campaign is allowed to raise more now, almost impossible the Friday before election day.

I don't want to overstate this, but waiting until this late date is as sleazy as a Washington lobbyist.  McCain-Feingold needs to be amended, and a minimum date must be set for announcing this.  What Harris did was legal, but in my eyes, he is no better than any of these corporate titans heading to federal prison.

Don't forget how Harris made his money.  He got pennies for the thousands of dollars he saved companies outsourcing American jobs.  Every $500 ad probably represents about $1,000,000 of lost income for Americans.

Blood Money.

In other words, with nothing positive of his own to say, and almost certainly trailing Jim Webb in the closing days of this election, corporate lobbyist Harris Miller is going to do what he does best - try to buy peoples' loyalty.  Hey, it worked for him before, so why not one last time for old times' sake?  Blech.

Let me state this as clearly as possible: A vote for Harris Miller is a vote for money- and special interest-dominated politics, as epitomized by Harris Miller. In short, Harris Miller represents EVERYTHING that's wrong with American politics today.

I feel dirty just reading about Miller. (phriendlyjaime - 6/9/2006 12:48:26 PM)

Let's get it out there and explain why it's sleazy.

And this does indeed show Miller's general character.

Yes. (Lowell - 6/9/2006 12:52:46 PM)

A lonely voice in SW Virginia (Ben - 6/9/2006 12:54:26 PM)
Somewhere in Virginia, there is a high school student graduating this month.

His family can not afford to send him to college after their paycuts a few years ago when their jobs were sent overseas.

Part of what would have been his college fund are paying for these ads.

Get over it. (Reen - 6/9/2006 1:18:26 PM)
Send that kid overseas, too.  Jobs are going begging for young people in Iraq you know.

um... (phriendlyjaime - 6/9/2006 1:21:26 PM)
what does that mean?  I cannot tell, and maybe it is supposed to read as sarcasm, but...

Yes. (Reen - 6/9/2006 1:22:43 PM)
sarcasm.

Thanks! :) (phriendlyjaime - 6/9/2006 1:27:37 PM)

Unfortunately (Reen - 6/9/2006 1:30:21 PM)
There may be some truth in it though.  In many 3rd world countries, the military is the only way to survive for a lot of people.  How bad will it be here in 10 years or so?

uh (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/9/2006 1:32:41 PM)
more reason to vote Webb.  He knew the real strategy and motivations BEFORE they went to Iraq.

Let me get this straight... (kevinceckowski - 6/9/2006 12:59:59 PM)
He just put in $250,000 MORE money according to yesterday's POST article, so he is up to nearly $750,000 of his own money.  So now what is he doing?

How much more money will he be allowed to put in?

If he wins the election, you can bet he will be putting mucho in if the folks on Cap.Hill don't come through, like 5-10 million.

By the way, just saw the first ALLEN tv ad, so charming, did not say a thing, just that good O'le country boy charm who wants to be YOUR Senator.  He LOOKED BORED, but the Allen supporters just don't care, they want him for President.

Gives me the chills thinking about it.

Harris is a desperate fool. (loboforestal - 6/9/2006 1:07:12 PM)
Too bad.  He could have lost with style.  Now he's going out like a sore loser.  Harris speaks of "disappointment".  Mr. Miller's actions, innuendo and meanness are despearte, losing measures.  The people and press are now deeply disappointed in Mr. Miller. Virginia would not be well represented by such a misguided, Macheavellian egotist.

Looks like Harris made character the issue.  Too bad for him it's about his character.

Jim Webb will win with grace and vision and this will help in November.

Republicans LOVE Miller (Josh - 6/9/2006 1:16:05 PM)
Anything he does is golden, becuase you damn sure don't want to face Jim Webb.

When the Republican party lost Jim Webb, they lost America.

Here - Miller's own words this week. (Reen - 6/9/2006 2:05:05 PM)

Removing the undue influence of money from the electoral process will better secure the principle of 'one man, one vote' in our democratic system.

I wouldn't call the man evil, just a garden variety hypocrite  with a few bucks. They are quite common. I prefer not to vote for one.

Dick Cheney (Reen - 6/9/2006 1:15:03 PM)
When Cheney moved his residence to Wyoming in 2000 it was legal, but it certainly violated the "spirit of the law." He thought that law was silly anyway.

And that was just the beginning of what is now a steady stream of politicians dancing at the edge of the law.  Maybe Harris Miller thinks that the millionaires amendment is silly, too.

And look at Cheney now. I hope we aren't to the point that circumventing laws and finding loopholes is thought of as a desirable quality in candidates running for public office.

Like Webb said, this race is about character. On Tuesday we'll get to find out just how much character really matters to Democrats in Virginia.

Hey I. Pubes (phriendlyjaime - 6/9/2006 1:28:56 PM)
You rate Webb supporters as trolls as opposed to making a good argument and allowing us to have our own opinion in our own backyard, and you will be troll rated just like TPP.

Come on Publio, drink the Kool-Aid! It's fun, gain passion, strength (the power of many to unite against 1), intelligence (the ability to think freely is liberating) - I know that's a scary thought for you, come out of the closet (metaphorically) and a new seat in the U.S. Senate.
