The Tailhack Scandal

A section in Harris Miller's mailer has this on the right

  Webb Dismissive of
  the Tailhook Sexual
  Harassment Scandal

And this with references on the left

Regarding the convention where several dozen
women were sexually assaulted, Webb said
Tailhook was "spun up" and "should have been a
  three or maybe five-day story."

The "spun up" phrase comes from this paragraph in Webb's writings:

The Tailhook scandal has been "spun up," to borrow a service phrase, into a crisis that affects the Navy leadership's credibility on a wide range of issues. A botched internal investigation and the ongoing revelations of inexcusable harassment of women at a Las Vegas convention of naval aviators a year ago have also left in their wake a witch hunt that threatens to swamp the entire naval service.

And here is where the other quote is drawn from:

Tailhook should have been a three- or maybe a five-day story. Those who were to blame for outrageous conduct should have been disciplined, and those who were not to blame should have been vigorously defended, along with the culture and the mores of the naval service. Instead, we are now at four years and counting, and its casualty list reads like a Who's Who of naval aviation.

Comments

Illustrates Miller's propensity to misstate (Info_Tech_Guy - 6/3/2006 7:19:00 AM)
ANYTHING Harris Miller, his campaign or his proxies assert should be regarded with great suspicion given Miller's long established record of lies and distortions. While Miller's ability to lie and distort have made him a formidable lobbyist and earned him financial fortune, they are not endearing qualities outside his circle of CEO business clients.

Miller's attempt to "submarine" Jim Webb over "Tailhook".

Jim Webb's integrity isn't in question over his comments; Harris Miller's lack of integrity is again on public display.

part of what is wrong with politics is "gotcha" (teacherken - 6/3/2006 9:46:55 AM)
we see it in forcing votes that cannot win in order to have campaign issues with which to beat upon one's opponents.

I would hope that Jim is prepped for the Post Radio debate to find an occasion to list two or three examples of Miller's misquoting or taking things out of context.

I am going to think out loud now  -- remember, independent groups or actors cannot in any way coordinate with campaign.  But wouldn't it be wonderful if some 527 type organization were to
- purchase a list of ALL Virginia voters
- send out a mailing which
-- reminded them they could vote in the Dem Senate primary
-- gave examples of what Miller says Webb said or wrote
-- then gave, as kathy just did, the actual contexts

By the way, publishing openly, as on this Webb site, and having someone then read something publicly available, does not, as far as I know, qualify as coordination.

If Miller (Arturo - 6/3/2006 9:57:52 AM)
wins this primary, I will have difficulty supporting him in the November election.  He alienates a lot of people.

I WILL NOT SUPPORT HIM (thegools - 6/3/2006 11:02:30 AM)
I may still vote for him, but then Mickey Mouse almost seems the better write-in candidate.

After Webb wins the primary they should make Kathy a member of their rapid response team... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/3/2006 10:40:33 AM)
Really, Kathy is always right on top of the issue with all of the cogent points and sources (no BS).

I agree. (thegools - 6/3/2006 11:03:17 AM)
She is really sharp.

Kathy, I appropriated your research to respond to Alice Marshall on DailyKos (Loudoun County Dem - 6/3/2006 12:12:20 PM)
I hope you don't mind, I cited you of course:

No, good. That piece is indefensible. (Kathy Gerber - 6/3/2006 12:48:26 PM)
No, I don't mind.  We need to get the truth out there.
