From WaPo:

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) has brought together a group of educators, officials and business leaders to help implement his plan to open the door to preschool to every 4-year-old in the state.

The 23-member panel, called the Start Strong Pre-K Council, will examine preschool services statewide -- government-funded programs as well as private and faith-based schools -- and recommend ways to build on that framework to make early instruction an option for all families. They will consider issues such as teacher qualifications and how children would be transported to preschool.

Wonderful day for Tim Kaine as well! (phriendlyjaime - 6/1/2006 3:54:16 PM)

Good for him!! (summercat - 6/1/2006 4:02:36 PM)
Universal access to preschool is such a necessity nowadays.  I'm so glad to see this picked up after the transportation brouhaha.  This concept was one of the great strengths of Tim Kaine's campaign, imo.

Pre-school (KathyinBlacksburg - 6/1/2006 5:39:44 PM)
I hope Tim builds on all forms of pre-school education.  Some children are best served by indivualized home-schooling.  Home schooling costs the family pocketbook and takes dedication and devotion.  Parents doing this are out of the Social Security system (not earning qualifying quarters) too.  And I hope Tim takes that into account.

It's not popular to say in progressive circles, but progressives are about choice, aren't they?  PS I am a former teacher (I've taught pre-school, high school and college level classes --all at different times in my life), and my husband is currently a teacher.  I support public education.  So I don't want to get attacked on this.  But I have become more enlightened about the benefits of home-schooling as one option.  With the right combination of parent and student, it can be a superior way to learn at an indivualized pace.

Tim Rocks. (Laura86 - 6/1/2006 6:31:20 PM)
Should we start a Draft Kaine for Senate movement too? ;-)

Kaine rules! (Steve Nelson - 6/1/2006 7:15:55 PM)
I love politicians that follow through with their campaign promises. Public Preschool was one of my main reasons for supporting Kaine. While Kilgore was always attacking kaine, Kaine was talking about his positive vision for Virginia.

Webb seems to be following this model with a positive campaign. I like that, he has my vote. I think that's a more noble way to campaign. There is no doubt in my mind that Allen will have a negative campaign.
