McEachin first quotes Webb on Affirmative Action and diversity programs, and specially Webb's view thtat they "should focus principally on African Americans due to their unique historical conditions."
McEachin then goes on to say:
I'm here to tell you that this is as powerful a statement in support of Affirmative Action as I've heard from any candidate for any office in the time that I've been a Democrat or an elected office holder.
Nice. And hopefully that puts to rest forevermore the phony "issue" of Jim Webb's views on Affirmative Action for African Americans.
So glad Delegate McEachin reiterated that quote.
I like James Webb...but I hope his leftward shift has an end...or people like me will stop supporting him.
Seriously, though, I wouldn't say Webb is shifting "leftward," but staying about the same. Here's how Webb describes himself politically:
"I would describe myself as conservative on national defense, populist on economic issues, and a social moderate."
What Webb says is that he's stayed abou the same while the national Republican Party has moved radically rightward the past few years. On Bush's Iraq adventure, for instance, Webb has consistently opposed that war. On social issues, Webb's fundamental belief is that government should not come in our front door unless there's a strong, overriding reason to do so. That philosophy leads him to be pro choice ("with Roe v. Wade"), pro-civil unions, and pro-2nd Amendment. Interesting combination, I'd say.
On immigration, Webb appears to be very similar to John Warner and the Senate immigration bill - secure the borders but treat iilegal immigrants in the country humanely and give them an earned path to citizenship.
