Sally Baird Wins Dem. Endorsement for Arlington School Board

FINAL RESULTS

Sally Baird:  1,135

Sharon Davis: 1,066

More details to come later.

[UPDATE:  Classy, gracious concession speach by Sally's opponent, Sharon Davis (wife of Del. Al Eisenberg).  Sally (pictured at left) and her supporters were, obviously, very very happy. This was a great victory for the GLBT comunity of Arlington, as well as for the "grassroots" and Arlington families in general.]

[UPDATE #2: The Webb for Senate volunteers were out in force all day yesterday at the Arlington School Board elections, talking to just about all of the 2,000+ voters.  Based on what I observed, the sentiment was overwhelmingly for Jim Webb among this crowd of rock-solid, almost-certain Democratic voters.  Also, I'd say we persuaded hundreds of people to come out and vote for Webb on June 13th.  Miller supporters?  Got me; I honestly didn't talk to anyone who admitted being for Miller.]

YAY! (Dan - 5/20/2006 11:16:09 PM)
Wait to go Sally!  She will make a great School Board representative.  Nice to see the right person win.

Congratulations to Sally Baird! (Kip - 5/21/2006 9:35:42 AM)
She worked extremely hard to make this win happen and she did it the right way by hitting the doors. Yes the general election is still to come, but in Arlington I think we now know who are next School Board member is going to be.

Elected to Arlington School Board (Buff Fan - 5/20/2006 11:17:38 PM)
Lowell, Thanks for being the first person to broadcast the results of the Arlington County Democratic Committee's unassembled caucus to determine a Democractic Party endorsement for the upcoming November School Board race.  I would like to congratulate both Sharon Davis and Sally Baird for their efforts.  And I would like to welcome Sally to the race for the Arlington School Board.

That said, your headline is highly misleading.  The other 119,000 or so registered voters in Arlington will be very surprised to learn that the school board election actually took place on May 20.  The state board of elections might find that interesting as well.

As for me I intend to vote for Cecelia Espenoza, the Federal Employee and chair of the Education Committee of Virginia's Latino Advisory Board,* who garnered over 20% of the vote in last year's three way school board race in Arlington.

If in your headline you meant that Sally Baird won the caucus, I will agree with you.  If you mean that Sally Baird gets a substantial bump by being an endorsee, I will grant you that.  But elected- I do not think so!

* appointed by Governor Warner in 2004, currently serving at the pleasure of Governor Tim Kaine.

You're right...my bad! (Lowell - 5/20/2006 11:55:42 PM)
I literally phoned this one in from the middle of the Sally Baird victory party, and probably got carried away in the enthusiasm of it all.  But obviously, this endorsement is not the end of the election at all.  I talked to Sally tonight, and she plans to work hard between now and election day in November to win over the other 119,000 or so registered voters in Arlington.  Thanks for the correction, I've changed the title accordingly.

Not to dampen spirits (Dan - 5/21/2006 9:57:26 AM)
I talked to a gentleman after he was introduced to me by the AYD President.  When I told him I was helping the Webb campaign he said, "I'm sorry".  He got on the offensive, saying he worked in the Pentagon and followed Webb for 20 years.  Called him a political opportunist.  I told him this was contrary to the Webb that I had met.  He said if Webb wins, he will vote for Allen.  He never met Webb by the way.  He just has some strange view of him.  Webb being a political opportunist seems furthest from the truth.  I said that Allen was kind of a nasty candidate.  Voting for Allen is kind of like having two people in the room.  One with a gun who will shoot you, and one who might shoot you, but you don't know.  Voting for Allen is like voting for getting shot.  I'd go with the other guy.  Of course, this was an extreme case, but worth bringing out to your attention.  It was freaky.  The guy's wife seemed a little put off by her husband's harsh words.

The guys sounds nuts (Lowell - 5/21/2006 11:13:32 AM)
No wonder his wife was put off.  That's just bizarre..."political opportunist" are about the last two words I'd ever use to describe Webb.  More like "political neophyte."
