Weed earned 114 votes to rival Bern Ewert's 73 at Saturday's 5th Congressional District Democratic Convention, securing the nomination and a shot at unseating Democrat-turned-Republican [Virgil] Goode.
In addition, the Daily Press reports that "Weed has raised $120,000 in campaign funds so far and has about 500 volunteers signed up." That's not bad, but in comparison, Virgil "MZM" Goode had $466,110 "cash on hand" at the end of the first quarter reporting period.
Obviously, Al Weed has some hard work ahead of him. Not too hard, though, for a guy who spent a year fighting in Vietnam as a Green Beret. Also, not too hard for a farmer and founder of Virginia's oldest winery, Mountain Cove Vineyards.
I look forward to chatting with Al Weed about his campaign against Virgil Goode. As of now, we plan to have a "live blogging" session on RK with Al on June 1. Start thinking of some good questions! :)

We know the “Virgil†who comes to our county fairs, but do we know the Mr. Goode who votes against clean water in our streams? We know the “Virgil†who shakes our hands on the street corners, but do we know the Mr. Goode who votes to give the President a blank check to fight a misguided war in Iraq?
We know the “Virgil†who seems concerned about growing unemployment numbers, but do we know the Mr. Goode who took campaign contributions from a convicted felon?
People may think they know “Virgilâ€, but it is time for us as Democrats to introduce voters to the real Mr. Goode.
