Coverage of Webb-Miller Debate

Washington Post: Michael Shear definitely has the best coverage so far.  Good work, Michael!

Associated Press: Good coverage, not as extensive as the Post but at least it's accurate.  Unlike...

The Richmond Democrat:  Nice job as always by JC Wilmore.

Daily Press.  Mediocre coverage. Among other things, they spell the House Speaker's name wrong.  It's H-A-S-T-E-R-T.  More importantly, it gives too much play to Miller's absurd excuses for why he gave money to Hastert, Spencer Abraham (who he also said he would do everything he could to re-elect!) and other Republicans.  Mainstream journalism is godawful; don't these people ever do any research?!?

The Richmond Times-Dispatch:  Definitely the worst coverage by far. Aside from being minimal, what they DO have is wrong!!  What a joke that paper is...godawful.  I'll tell you, if I had a choice between reading that rag every day and any political blog in Virginia, I'd take the blog.  It couldn't be worse than the Rightwing Times Dispatch!

P.S.  Most intriguing of all is the red alert/siren thingie at Not Larry Sabato, with the headline, "HARRIS MILLER ADMITS CRIME ON THE AIR."  Now what on earth could THAT be about? :)

Can you hear it? (Lowell - 5/19/2006 2:21:08 PM)
My speakers are working fine, cuz they're working on other sites, but I can't hear the debate.

Miller Drop Out- (I wrote him this-others should too) (thegools - 5/19/2006 2:40:39 PM)
Dear Mr. Miller,
In January I was disheartened by the lack of a challenger to George Allen's Senate seat.  Then I was cheered by your entry into the race.  I must commend your efforts.  Indeed I argued early on in the blogs that it would be good to have two candidates  so as to let people have a choice.  Now however, the situation has changed.  You should have a look at http://virtuconindustries.blogspot.com/2006/05/larry-and-me.html regarding comments made by political analyst Larry Sabato and the rumors of efforts to get Allen supporters to vote for you in the Democratic primary.

Democratic support is clearly behind James Webb on a grassroots, regional, statewide and national level.  There is no denying Jim Webb will be the stronger candidate and has the support to make a better run against George Allen.  We must not let Allen's supporters sabotage this election to steal another undeserved term.  Therefore I ask you emphatically, Please withdraw from this race.  You will earn a lot of love from the Democratic netroots and grassroots, and you would serve to strengthen our chances of retaking the Senate.

If you don't withdraw, you may very likely contribute to the success of the man you seek to take a Senate seat from.  Please consider my plea and do what is best to rid us of our current Senator.  Be the gentleman and withdraw now.

Very Respectfully,

Good debate. Too short though (JennyE - 5/19/2006 2:49:25 PM)
Webb scored well substantively. Harris Miller, out of the blue, tried to throw Webb off with questions about Webb being a real Democrat. I like how Webb shot back at Miller by connecting Miller endorsements to Republicans. It was funny seeing egg on Miller's face.

Sad but true. Harris Miller can't stay on topic because he can't see himself beating Webb if he plays fair in this campaign. He has to resort to weak and negative personal attacks against Webb.

I called the RTD (phriendlyjaime - 5/19/2006 3:26:19 PM)
They ASSURED me that they had corrected the names in their article, however, I cannot find the new article!  Anyone with the new RTD link?

Never mind, got it. (phriendlyjaime - 5/19/2006 3:27:40 PM)
What a difference between the two articles!

Jim Webb was never a Republican (Info_Tech_Guy - 5/19/2006 4:21:17 PM)
I doubt that Jim Webb “admits to being a Republican until 2002” as Mike Shear states in his WP article today. Jim Webb has always said that he was alienated from the Democratic Party in the wake of Vietname and was a Reagan Democrat. Mike Shear got this wrong. It should be corrected.

Disappointed in both of them (snolan - 5/19/2006 10:44:07 PM)
I gotta respectfully disagree with most of you Webb fans out there.  This debate cost them both dearly, and Webb more than Miller.

It was am embarrasment.  They should have been pointing out to the voters how they would each lead differently as a senator.  They failed to talk about very many issues, and ended up both calling upon Chuck Robb as an example of who they'd like as an endorser...  Chuck Robb?  He couldn't beat Allen!

The two scary salient facts I got from watching the debate:

Webb has trouble voicing his positions clearly.
Miller gets flustered too easily when under attack.

We MUST team up to crush George Allen.  This is an ominous way to start.
