Today Jim Webb and Harris Miller debated in Norfolk in front of the cameras of Joel Rubin's political show "On the record".  The debate will air Sunday morning on Norfolk's ABC affiliate.  The following is a recap from the Webb campaign:

Webb Overwhelms Miller with Wealth of Knowledge and Experience
Harris Miller Continues His Campaign Long Negative Attacks on Webb

Democratic US Senate candidate Jim Webb kept an often agitated Harris Miller on the defensive in today+óGé¼Gäós televised debate on Joel Rubin+óGé¼Gäós political talk show +óGé¼+ôOn the Record,+óGé¼-¥ which will air this Sunday at 10:30AM on Norfolk+óGé¼Gäós ABC affiliate. Webb scored points throughout the one hour debate on issues ranging from electability, the economy, energy policy and the War in Iraq.

+óGé¼+ôI would have absolutely voted against the resolution to go to war,+óGé¼-¥ said Webb. +óGé¼+ôThat+óGé¼Gäós what I think leadership is all about+óGé¼-ªWe need people who ask the hard questions +óGé¼GÇ£ people who have the experience and ability to ask the hard questions.+óGé¼-¥

More on the flip side.

Update: The debate is now avaliable online:
http://www.wvec.com/news/topstories/stories/wvec_local_051906_miller-webb_debate.3c0c1.html

By contrast, Miller chose early in the debate to desperately attack Webb. For instance, while Webb was outlining his agenda to change the direction of the country, Miller interrupted Webb to attack him.

Webb responded by articulating for his vision for an expanded Democrat party based on core Democratic values, +óGé¼+ôThe old labels are falling away. No matter what people are saying eight years ago are not applicable after 9/11. There are a lot of people like me, who I think should come back to the Democratic Party, and we should be grateful for that if you are a loyal Democrat+óGé¼-ª+óGé¼-¥

When confronted by his own history of personally contributing money to a host of conservative Republicans, Miller denied it.  In fact, Miller has made personal contributions totaling $5,500 to Republican members of Congress including Sen. Spencer Abraham, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Sen. Arlen Specter, Rep. Billy Tauzin, Sen. John Sununu and Rep. Adam Putnam.

In a move that will surprise many in the Democratic party base, particularly within the important labor base, Miller defended his support of outsourcing as a legitimate business practice and Miller refused when questioned in the debate to answer whether he would have supported the military invasion of Iraq.

+óGé¼+ôToday+óGé¼Gäós debate reaffirmed that Jim Webb is the only Democratic Senate candidate who can beat George Allen in November,+óGé¼-¥ said Kristian Denny Todd, a spokeswoman for Jim Webb. +óGé¼+ôIn the Senate, Jim Webb will fight to refocus America+óGé¼Gäós foreign policy and traditions, and will be the leader of the anti-outsourcing movement.+óGé¼-¥

Jim Webb is a decorated Marine, former Secretary of the Navy and Assistant Secretary of Defense, an award-winning author and widely respected journalist.  Webb was awarded, among other decorations, the Navy Cross and Silver Star for valor as a Marine.

Since beginning his campaign for Senate in March, Webb has won two straw polls sanctioned by local Democratic parties. He won 57% of the vote at a Prince William County Democratic event and won 58% of the vote at a Fairfax County Democratic event. He has also secured support from numerous Virginia elected officials, national elected officials, the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, the Vietnamese Veterans Coalition, and high-ranking military officials.

I like (Corey - 5/19/2006 12:30:30 PM)
I like JC's headline: "Breaking! Disaster at debate for Harris Miller!"

I'm pretty good at headlines (JC - 5/19/2006 1:03:21 PM)
If I'd been raised in a city with a better newspaper than the RTD I might been a newspaperman myself.

I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS DEBATE!!! (Loudoun County Dem - 5/19/2006 12:40:29 PM)
Between this and Rove's impending indictment I feel like a 6 year old on xmas eve!!!

I can't wait either (Corey - 5/19/2006 12:46:57 PM)
I can't wait either, I hope there is a way to get it on the net.

Who is the Anti Christ? (Lowell - 5/19/2006 12:56:19 PM)
What else is new, but the Rightwing...er, Richmond Times-Dispatch messed up another story. What a shocker, huh?  According to the RTD, "The debate became lively when Miller described Webb as 'the anti-Christ of out-sourcing.'"

Well, obviously that doesn't make any sense. Do these RTD people have any clue whatsoever what they're talking about, or do they just make up shit?  You know, for all the criticism of the blogs, I'll take them for accuracy over that farce of a newspaper any day.

Luckily, the AP got it right: "Webb responded by saying that organized labor had labeled Miller as 'the anti-Christ of outsourcing.'"

GOTV goes UGLY (thegools - 5/19/2006 3:34:08 PM)
The GOTV site is playing this as a religious slur against Miller.  I really wish we could keep it real and stick to facts instead of spin.

I posted this comment on that site and am putting it here since I am not sure the GOTV censor will allow it:

"With all due respect, (your post) reminds me of a GOTV 'blackhands' post...or perhaps like Bush's push poll citing John McCain's 'black child.'
A headline like that based on such spin is a giant stretch... based on nothing.

I respect your championing Miller, but please don't get so ugly."

Transcript trickles in... (Lowell - 5/19/2006 1:00:25 PM)
Joel Rubin: What would change if the Democrats did gain the majority? Is it just going to be investigations of the Bush administration? What would be the change that you can tell the American people because I think a lot of Americans maybe have bought into the Republican line that Democrats can't be trusted except to raise taxes and raise sending?

Webb: I think that, first of all, you will see that line over and over againâ€â€there is a fear factor in trying to get swing voters, saying that if you vote for the democrats you are going to have the party of chaos and liberal issues take root. But the reality is on the issues where the Republicans have traditionally been stronger: defending the country, readiness, the budget, the deficit has increased by one/third just in five years

Miller, [interrupting]: Wait a minute, but why did you support George Bush and George Allen in 2000 you knew then…

Webb: It was a different situation. Why did you donate money to Dennis Hastert? I never donated money to a Republican in my life… You have contributed money….well I have worked for different

Miller, [interrupting again]: You attacked Chuck Robb, a fellow marine, in 2000…

Webb: I never attacked Chuck Robb second of all, why have eleven people from his senior staff endorsed me and not you?

LOVING THIS!!! (Loudoun County Dem - 5/19/2006 1:02:38 PM)

Yeah, I want the transcript... (Delta Mike - 5/19/2006 1:04:53 PM)
... I have no doubt Webb kicked arse, but I need to see for myself. Initial signs look very good, however.

Why won't Miller admit he supported the Iraq invasion? (Lowell - 5/19/2006 1:23:45 PM)
"And once again in contrast to Jim Webb, Miller refused when questioned in the debate to answer whether he would have supported the military invasion of Iraq." - Webb campaign press release

Well gee, I wonder why THAT is!  Perhaps because Harris Miller strongly SUPPORTED the invasion of Iraq?  Besides telling my colleague Josh and me back in December 2005 that he felt Saddam was a threat to US interests in the region, Israel, etc., I have word from a reliable source that Miller said something today like, "when I heard Colin Powell at the UN, I believed him."

So why won't Miller just admit that he supported the Iraq War, instead of hiding behind gimmicky calls for Rumsfeld to resign?

Viola Baskerville (Josh Israel - 5/19/2006 3:54:10 PM)
If the Washington Post/Shear article is accurate:

Webb: "I've been endorsed by all three of the candidates for lieutenant governor last year."

What happened to Viola Baskerville?

Good point... (Josh - 5/19/2006 4:07:59 PM)
There were four.  As a member of the Kaine Cabinet, I'm told that Viola can't endorse.  She read a statement for Jim Webb at the VA JJ Dinner in January, but that shouldn't be considered an endorsement.  Webb could have added, "who have made endorsements," but he missed that.

immediate impressions (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/19/2006 5:27:12 PM)
My immediate gut reactions, that are just emotional, no "head" were:

1st impressions:
Webb:  credible, captain of football team type

Miller:  troll, dude who got beat up a lot in high school

When Miller suddenly attacked webb:

Rude whining ass!  I mean right there, it was "no way is this guy representing me as a US Senator".

When Webb kept engaging him:

blow it off, he's a troll, yet at the same time I kind of wished he would have punched him and said "good for you" and especially glad he nailed him on those Republican campaign contributions, but felt he went after him a little too long..for in my brain I had already dismissed Miller as a loser whiner by the attack itself.

Miller on outsourcing and the job losses:

Broadband will save our jobs:  Bold outright laughter!
High speed Internet access will protect American jobs????
ho ho ho!
Education:  more laughter but then I know that top tier
university engineering grads were displaced by H-1B too

Webb:

yes, correct, super excellent, ye speaks the truth! then then wanted more plan details...I wanna know specifically how you are going to stop this onslaught on American jobs.. at least talked about the realities of 1/20th of salary and a different corporation entity definition in America (that is a very obscure concept, just needs to be more fully sound byted and detailed).

Gas prices:

Miller:  good points, ethanol is a very good short term solution...1st time Miller sounded like he had a clue to me.

Webb:  very good points, and nailed lobbyists, talked about a multiple point strategic solution...excellent...excellent and then he said "nuclear", and I thought of the Simpsons as in the cartoon,3 mile island and went ugh!

Overall the gut impression on who is the real Senator?

Webb, hands down.

a different corporation entity definition in America (Josh - 5/19/2006 5:39:18 PM)
I have to watch the debate again.

One of the most egregious abuses of any supreme court decision is the 14th amendment.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.amendmentxiv.html

It was intended to protect blacks after slavery.  No longer 3/5ths of a person, now blacks were legally whole "persons".  Seems great, right?

Well, turns out that a bunch of corporate lawyers got together and decided that corporations should be legally defined as "persons" and that the 14th amendment should protect CORPORATIONS as people.

I read a quote that in the first 20 years after the 14th passed, there were hundreds of claims for protection under the 14th amendment and a mere dozen brought by former slaves or their kin.  The vast majority of cases were brought by Corporate interests.

So legally, corporations are now "persons" without bodies or souls.  Their shareholders have extremely limited responsibility for the actions undertaken by those "persons".  Moreover, these "persons" are immortal and can accrue financial resources forever.

That last point is incredibly important, because since 1976, in America, money is free speech.

Thus, Corporate "persons" may have many millions of times the right to free speech as any individual, in terms of government interest.

This has to change.

corporate law (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/19/2006 6:25:47 PM)
I agree, that's really the thing to change but I'm hoping for some details because that's 100 years of precedent in US law.

Miller campaign claims debate victory... (Loudoun County Dem - 5/19/2006 6:04:29 PM)
I guess the Miller campaign assumes that most people won't actually see the debate...

The Miller campaign just sent this email (bold text is as it is in the email):

Harris Miller wins primary debate

Today, in a debate with his primary opponent, Harris Miller continued to show why he is the candidate with the strong experience and understanding of the issues, the commitment to Virginia Democratic principles, and the winning message to defeat George Allen in November.

Harris talked about his positive vision for real change in Washington, saying:
"As a businessman, as a technology leader, I believe we need to take this country in a different direction. We need to bring real solutions to real problems, the same way that Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have done here in Virginia."

You can help Harris bring his real agenda for change to Washington - contribute today!

Harris's opponent, James Webb, lost his composure and refused to answer the question when he was asked to explain how he could have supported George Bush and George Allen in 2000. Webb voted for Bush and publicly endorsed George Allen six years ago, attacking Chuck Robb, and calling Bill Clinton's presidency "the most corrupt administration in modern memory."

Webb remained defensive and on edge throughout the debate, culminating with, as the Washington Post described it, "an impromptu press conference after the taping with a visibly frustrated Webb telling Miller to 'shut your mouth.'"

That kind of outburst helps explain why Webb has refused to participate in other major debates, including one hosted by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, and another proposed by the Fairfax County Democratic Committee.

Meanwhile, Harris spoke knowlegeably and passionately about the need for our country to invest in the future - improving education, increasing opportunities for job training, breaking America's addiction to foreign oil by investing in alternative energy, and creating a real exit strategy to get our troops home from Iraq.

Harris also remains the only candidate in this race holding Donald Rumsfeld accountable for his failures in Iraq. As the Washington Post reported, "Miller again called for the firing of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, something that Webb again declined to do."

Help us elect a Virginia Democrat we can count on in the United States Senate. Contribute to Harris's campaign!

Webb lashed out with a barrage of negative attacks against Harris today, including outlandishly referring to Harris as the "anti-Christ of outsourcing." But none of this ludicrous name-calling explains why just last month, Webb was still singing the praises of Ronald Reagan, telling MSNBC, "Ronald Reagan was a really fine president on the issues that I cared about."

Virginia Democrats are looking for a candidate who can bring real leadership, real change, and real Virginia Democratic values to Washington. Harris Miller proved today that he is the Virginia Democrat we can count on.

Thank you for your support as we work to bring real change to Washington!

Sincerely,

Andy Resnick
Campaign Manager

Harris Miller for U.S. Senate

that's a joke (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/19/2006 6:08:54 PM)
They are nuts.  Miller was the one who lost obviously.

Their skills in propaganda coming from 20+ years being a corporate lobbyist continue obviously.

Born Whining (Kindler - 5/19/2006 7:31:56 PM)
What Harris needs to learn is that whenever he goes negative, he's only shooting himself in the foot.  When he talks about the issues, he sounds fine, but as soon as he gets into a brawl, he starts quivering and blinking and looking all nasty and nervous and negative.  And he thereby gives his opponent -- in this case, Jim Webb -- the opportunity to look calm and statesmanlike in comparison.

Harris, do yourself a favor and climb on up to the high ground!
