Who's Larry Sabato talking about? According to the VVC, "None other than 2006 Democrat senate hopeful Harris Miller."
Ouch.
Unfortunately, Sabato reportedly also said that "neither Miller nor Webb would defeat George Allen in November," that "Webb would make it more interesting than Miller, but they would both ultimately lose."
We'll see about that. My take on this election is that Jim Webb has a definite shot at Allen, but Webb will have to run a superb, well-funded campaign to do it. If so, Webb can win, because he can compete in all "four Virginias" and because he's got the national security "cred" that Allen completely lacks. In addition, Webb can win over veterans, "Reagan Democrats," Independents, and other rural/red voters. In other words, Webb can perform like Mark Warner did in 2001, except possibly even better because Warner ran at a time when a post-9/11 President Bush was at 90% approval, while right now, Bush is hovering at 30%. This year, in other words, there's a major headwind for George Allen and for all Republican candidates. Back in 2000, the wind was at their backs. Big change.
By the way, tomorrow's an important day in the Webb vs. Miller contest, with a debate being taped in Norfolk for broadcast on Sunday at 10:30 am on WVEC-TV, Norfolk's ABC affiliate. Good luck to Jim Webb; don't forget to ask Harris Miller why he supported the Iraq invasion and the Bush tax cuts for rich people!
Something tells me many GOPers will vote for him.
GO WEBB!
WHY were they undecided?
They had no idea there was another election. One woman made a comment about how we just voted for governor and President, she had no idea there was another race going on; is it really that important, she asked. YES, I replied.
There's more...but it may be diary material. Plus...I don't want to give anyone else from, aHEM, another side, any ammunition.
