Great news all around for conservation in our Commonwealth.  First, the USDA is providing a hefty grant for important recycling R&D:

Finding ways to reuse agricultural plastics received a jump start last week when the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development sector awarded a $75,000 grant to fund its study.

Ellen Matthews Davis, state USDA Rural Development director, presented a check to Butch Nottingham, Bill Shockley and Jane Corson-Lassiter to begin researching ways to recycle used agricultural and aquacultural plastics....

Davis said that nearly 1,200 tons of the plastics are being landfilled, a practice she called "economically and environmentally unsound."

Also, this bit of news is nice to see:

One day [before,] Gov. Tim Kaine announced an aggressive plan to conserve 400,000 acres of farm and forested land during his next four years in office ....

An emphasis on recycling and land conservation - a great week for Virginia's conservationists!
