Norfolk Virginian-Pilot writer Margaret Edds has a good peice here on the two contenders for George Allen's senate seat, James Webb and Harris Miller. It breaks down like this: Miller has the state Democratic support, while Webb has the national Democratic support. The local Virginia Democratic blogosphere is all over Webb as their man. They have painted as the outsider (Webb) vs. the insider (Miller). The tipping point? It could be the black vote. Leading black politicians in the state, notably Sen. Henry Marsh of Richmond, have backed Miller. I have no idea where this drops. But I think that Miller would actually be a stronger candidate than Webb. Webb seems like a one-trick pony--the kind of military guy that Dems instinctivley jump to (Kerry, Clarke, Hacket among others) but don't pan out. Past Iraq, it will be hard for Webb to overcome all his past Republicanism. Miller offers more of a choice, plus he enjoys a sizeable personal fortune. But I'm a Republican, what do I know?
The primary is on June 13, and I have no idea how this is going to drop.
In sum, yet another Republican repeats the false, ridiculous "meme" that Miller has more Virginia endorsements than Jim Webb (for the record, Webb's endorsers like Leslie Byrne, Phil Puckett, Chap Petersen and Owen Pickett received more total votes than Miller's Virginia endorsers!). And yet another Republican expresses his preference for us Democrats to go ahead and make his day by nominating Harris Miller. Finally, yet another Republican disses Jim Webb - a guy with one of the most amazing, varied biographies (war hero, attorney, author, Emmy Award winner, movie director, etc., etc.) ever - as a "one trick pony."
Gee, I wonder why Republicans keep saying that Harris Miller will be a better candidate for Democrats to run against George Allen. Anyone have any ideas, cuz I'm totally stumped. Duhhhhhh..... Ha. :)
Leave it to breathless bush supporters to conclude that opposition to the disastrous Iraq War is not an effective issue...
Your commentary and JC's at http://www.raisingkaine.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=D76BA2A1CFCB2C706EBB39C0C99AF661?diaryId=2541 sum it up quite nicely.
It's interesting to me that this Red State blogger is unaware of the fact that some conservative writers/publications do not dismiss Jim Webb with such casual disdain. In fact, both Will and "The American Conservative" magazine have offered significant respect for Jim Webb. Oh well, rabid Bush supporters are in a world of their own where facts don't intrude... (Reminds me of some Miller trolls too.)
