Can Republicans Govern Virginia?

I don't always agree with the editorial board of the Virginian Pilot, but today I do:

Can Republicans govern Virginia?

Republicans took control of both houses of the General Assembly in 2000. In three of those six years, they have failed to adopt a budget on the schedule set by the constitution.
...
Given the GOP's claim as the party of trustworthy financial stewards, that's astonishing. Where has the GOP gone wrong?
...
Democrats had plenty of flaws, but budget meltdowns weren't one of them. Republicans have either punted, thereby forcing the governor to take charge in 2001, or procrastinated so long as to needlessly waste tax dollars with overtime pay.
...
Deeply held principle is a fine thing, but at the end of the day, democracy demands compromise and skilled mediation.
...
In the old days, Democratic House Majority Leader Dick Cranwell was a master at hammering out agreements that left many dissatisfied, but most feeling they'd won something worth fighting for.
...
Where are the Republican Cranwells?

Any party that expects to be taken seriously or to govern for long must spawn a few.

The Republican Party, the party of ineffectiveness.  Maybe they should check out Taegan Goddard's book "You won, now what?".  On the other hand there are several quality Democratic House and Senate candidates on their way to relieving the Virginia Republican Party from having to carry the burden of providing effective leadership.

I've been asking this question for months... (Josh - 5/12/2006 12:23:19 PM)
Nice to see some media coverage that asks this critical question.

The answer is clear, but it's good to see the Pilot asking.

True (Corey - 5/12/2006 12:43:05 PM)
Nothing new, but glad to see the media publicly asking the question.
