On the Bill Press Show this morning, here's an exchange with Harry Reid about the November elections:
Bill Press: As I understand, it+óGé¼Gäós what, five or six seats that Democrats have to win to take control of the Senate?
Sen. Harry Reid: We have to pick up six. And if the election were held today, we would win in five of those states. And we+óGé¼Gäóre in really good shape in two other states, and we+óGé¼Gäóre moving into a third and that+óGé¼Gäós Virginia. So we have a real shot at it.
Interesting, eh?

You beat me by 30 seconds, I deleted my diary.
You'll get me next time, man! (Lowell - 5/5/2006 3:01:03 PM)
:)
He's not talking about Harris Miller (DanG - 5/5/2006 12:49:36 PM)
Only Jim Webb can win here. Harris Miller should drop out to prevent Republicans from spoiling our primary and ruining things for Virginia. Harry Reid, and national Democrats, think Virginia is winnable if Jim Webb is the nominee.
They have... (Corey - 5/5/2006 12:51:17 PM)
The DSCC must have internal polls to back this up. It is of course no coincidence Reid is endorsing Webb in the coming days.

will officially put the VA Senate race on the national radar, and the US Senate within reach of a Democratic takeover.
Anyway, I still ain't sayin.
Aha! (JC - 5/5/2006 1:35:25 PM)
I can read between the lines as well as anyone . . .
"Josh Chernila" is really Harry Reid.
Can't fool me.
That explains many things... (Lowell - 5/5/2006 3:02:05 PM)
that have puzzled me for the past several months. Ahhhhhhh.....Josh Chernila=Harry Reid, now all is clear. :)
I have a feeling ... (Rob - 5/5/2006 1:20:24 PM)
that Miller will be pushed out of the race soon. That call by Schumer, this possible endorsement by Reid ... ironic that the "establishment candidate" is possibly getting pushed out by the establishment!
We're taking back this country... (Delta Mike - 5/5/2006 1:49:31 PM)
... one grassroots candidate at a time. Go Webb!
Now about this Hillary person...
More proof (Craig - 5/5/2006 1:24:19 PM)
as if you needed much more, that the DSCC is not-so-secretly pulling for Webb. Although combining this with Schumer's admonishment of Miller pretty much proves it.
Can I have the link to the above exchange? n/t (phriendlyjaime - 5/5/2006 1:51:01 PM)
you have to listen to the podcast... (Josh - 5/5/2006 2:30:54 PM)
It's posted on Bill Press' site.
Thanks! n/t (phriendlyjaime - 5/5/2006 2:43:59 PM)
Republican Scheming (lmdiamond - 5/5/2006 2:13:14 PM)
Talking about state races, I do not know of an instance where one party has successfully engineered a weaker candidate from an opposing party to victory. This is frequently discussed and never happens. It requires way too much effort to motivate enough voters to go to the polls and do this sort of anti-thing.
Still, is there anything wrong with the Webb campaign mobilizing supporters for the primary? It is a dry run for the general and Jim needs a lot of momentum.
Exactly (JC - 5/5/2006 2:52:11 PM)
Exactly right Lee. The key is not to take anything for granted. This is a practice run for November.
If we mop the floor with Miller in June... (Delta Mike - 5/5/2006 2:54:21 PM)
... it will only build momentum for November.
Frankly, I hope Miller doesn't drop out - as long as he keeps his guns pointed at Allen. It will sharpen Webb and force him to organize a good GOTV operation, much like what happened in Ohio with Charlie Wilson.
Mopping the floor with Miller (Arturo - 5/5/2006 3:47:01 PM)
Thank you for that expression. He did that to American workers. It's pay back time.
it happened in Long Island (teacherken - 5/5/2006 3:05:20 PM)
with the one republican congressman who flipped to the Dems. I am doing this from memory but I think his name was Michael Forbes. The Repubs got a non-entity but long-term Dem to challenge him in the next primary, she narrowly beat him and then the repubs won the seat back handily, which would have been hard to do with the incumbent running in the general.
Of course, that did not involve cross-voting as is implied here, but they did give her a lot of financial help.
And remember that repubs were using Al Sharpton as a means of undercutting the Dems, particularly Dean. Remember, Republican Roger Stone was running that campaign, and it is still not clear how high a percentage of Sharpton's funds actually came from Dem sources.
Big diary on Kos (phriendlyjaime - 5/5/2006 5:10:04 PM)
Not tooting my own horn here, but if anyone wants to check it out, I put up a big diary on Harris Miller leaving the race over on the Kos. I am hoping it won't fall into never never land, and that the Miller people won't troll rate me out of existance. I played nice, too. ;)
I already have one...I think. Or at least an out of stater who didn't appreciate all of my links, and says that we still aren't sure of webb's party affiliation.

Cheney's got a gun (Nichole - 5/6/2006 8:05:16 PM)
I like that phrase... a real good shot :) I guess Cheney is not one.
Oh gosh I am silly tonight!
